Regarding ows at least.. Yeah couldn't have be the threat they've felt for more than a decade about speaking their mind and the knowledge that it'll be viciously attacked as anti-American or even more laughably 'socialist'. Basically, a growing number of people are simply saying 'You've had a nice ride fucking with my expression. Enjoy what's left, cause the hey day of bullying people who oppose your opinion is over' I see it toning down once they are satisfied they are actually IN the the national dialogue. But not if people keep trying to squash a whole movement using pundits who lie, posting their fucking derogatory shit on the the space the movement creates to build their movement (and not to play customer service to guttermouths there JUST for the purpose of disruption).
For a long time a certain faction of right-wingers (whatever fucking party affiliation they claim or VERY CAREFULLY won't claim) have engaged in a major mosh pit of trolling places where sober discussion was set aside as a central purpose (and I make NO SUCH claim about this place... one would have to go back WAY before my time to find that warm fuzzy).
For instance, you go to facebook and just sit on an occupy page... anytime a 'food for thought' (I won't even count the posts which are pointing out a financial abuse), but just the ones where someone is trying to alert someone that a new video with someone's speech at Liberty Plaza or some place like it, an actual INTERESTED reader often has to wade through dozens of totally obnoxious comments, just to find out from the comments if the link to a youtube video or magazine article is worth your reading/viewing time. I mean, isn't that the real purpose of those comment slots?
Long before mic checks ever started, the trolls were assailing the movement in that manner... so maybe all these people with such strong opinions could take a stand on behavior like that, which is very much equivalent.
Hell there's even sites like godlike productions who are sending people onto those pages... However if you click one of their 'plant' links, you'll find it captures your IP as you browse to it and it adds you to their blacklist.... I think they have been told not to do that on facebook any longer. But it went on for a good month. And people actually emailed me when I dumped my ip and logged through another IP pool to address the issue on their home turf.
I was told by the site owner's users that the owner encourages sabotage. And these guys are total foilheads... there are plenty out there with their little knitting circles who aren't nearly as nuts, but just punks, who have elaborate discussions on how to fuck with OWS people.
It's sort of funny really. People getting all up in arms about something that happens in the BUSINESS DAY of a professional politician who's up to his eyeballs in pure shit. But when someone faces continual BS from web punks, it's "aaaaah, that's just how it is".
