I realized from reading a previous thread that we have some photography enthusiasts here in CM. No surprise, I suppose. I'd just never thought about it before. But the camera talk in that thread never mentioned a development that has had me drooling for a while now, so I thought I'd trot it out.

Some time ago a company called Foveon created a new sensor. Taking advantage of the fact that red, green, and blue light penetrate silicon to different depths, Foveon built a layered image sensor capable of registering full color and luminance data at every pixel. The result was a sensor hailed for the superior sharpness and color fidelity of its images when compared to a conventional sensor of the same size.

The illustration below explains why:



The first Foveon sensors were small, and when Sigma started building cameras that incorporated the new devices they were rather simple point and shoot affairs. But things tripped my buy signal when Sigma released the SD-15 utilizing Foveon's latest 14-megapixel chip:



I still have some more pennies to save. But meanwhile, in case anyone else might be in the market for a camera, or just interested...

Status: offline 		I would be interested to see how this configuration affects the processing speed. That is the big draw back on CMOS sensors.

Canon has developed new sensors that can capture 60 frames per second video...on a moon lit night. Or 1/100 the light required for their existing low light DSLR’s. In my photography I often need low light and low noise. Pixel color depth is not a problem to me…in fact it is quite satisfactory and any increase would be beyond my ability to discern anyway.

A big part of the reason for my recent upgrades and the depth of my research was low light shooting. I fucking HATE flashes. I also love evening/early morning/night photos. Now, I can sit here in my living room with only a lamp on, and get a great shot from across the room with little to no noise.

Status: offline 		most of my pics with my c20d are done sans flash.. flash annoys me usually.. artifiically lighting places that are best left shadowed...

if that makes sense?

Status: offline 		Please do not, please, let Gary see this thread. He just bought ANOTHER new camera this summer. He also donated 250+ cameras to the museum. The last thing we need is another camera even if it does cartwhells and can cook dinner.

Status: offline 		I've noticed too that a great deal of people are camera bugs. There are even a few pros I've spoken with. I consider myself a novice with my little Nikon D40. I would love to be able to invest in something new but it's not to be. So if Santa reads poise's post might I add.. meeeee toooooo!

Just 6???? How nice. Heck, I've gotten to the point where I decorate the motor home with cameras. Some of them look really neat. Of couse, he had some that were gorgeous were 3 feet long but made out of wood. That's a bit tooooo big for decorating the motor home we live in.

By the way...if anyone is looking for a particular camera, we might have it if it hasn't been donated to the museum already.

I have to admit that Gary started to sort out his storage sheds this summer. Some of the old...like 120 old pictures are gorgeous. Also, his dad was a photographer and took pics of Glacier National Park in the 1940s that are to die for. Even I, a photographic baby finds some of this stuff impressive.

Status: offline 		I checked out a review of the Sigma SD-15 and I have been checking out a Sigma forum.  It doesn't seem as though this Foveon sensor has as of yet translated into any substantial image quality improvement over a single layer with the same number of pixels.  The Foveon gets to 14.1 mp with only a third of the actual photsites of a single layer sensor, (4.65 photosites x 3 layers),  though IQ seems to be decent.         http://photo.net/equipment/sigma/sd15/review/      I wasn't aware of it even though this sensor has been around for almost a year now.

I'm wondering if Canon or Nikon will come out with the same technology or what improvements will be coming down the road.  I'm waiting to see what the upgrade looks like to the Canon 7-D. I'm even considering a 5 D M2 or it's upgrade.


There is a good forum on Sigma SLR's at  Dpreview  http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1027   .     I'm going to check out the Sigma SD-1 next(46 MP Foveon sensor).  I think it's interesting but I would hold off jumping into one of these cameras because I'm too invested in Canon stuff to change to another system.  Seeing that Sigma typically produces after market products,  it's too bad they didn't make their SLR's to fit with Canon lenses.

Status: offline 		I recently purchased the 5D Mark II and I strongly recommend it if you are pro and want to do a lot of very low light work.

If the low light is not a major issue for you, for the price, the 7D is fine.

I nearly got the 7D but was talking to a lot of pros and all advised to spend the extra $ and suck it up for the 5D.......I have no regrets.

Status: offline 		I'm thinking the same thing,  I'll be using it mostly for fun or for the occasional wedding, (I use a 30D for that right now).  I do portraiture with studio lights mostly, using a 10 or 20 D. 

  I don't really need the 8.5 frame per second on the 7 D and I like the full frame sensor in the 5 D.  Right now I have enough cameras for what I need and will wait to see what the upgrades bring.  The feature that will mean the most to me is the accuracy of the auto-focus. IQ goes without saying but is excellent on both of those.
