Status: offline 		'Gay’ Penguins to Be Separated at Toronto Zoo


The amorous connection between two inseparable male penguins will soon come to an end when the Toronto Zoo pairs them with females.

“The males will be put in with a specific female so they have the chance to get to know one another, and if they bond, that’s what we’re looking for,” Bill Rapley, the zoo’s executive director of conservation and wildlife, told ABCNews.com.

Buddy, 21, and Pedro, 10, lived in a zoo in Toledo, Ohio, before traveling to Canada to become part of the Toronto Zoo’s first African penguin exhibit in 18 years.

Zookeepers quickly observed courtship and mating behaviors that are typically exhibited only between males and females.

“When you put things in captivity, odd things happen,” Kevin McGowan of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology in Ithaca, N.Y., told ABCNews.com. “The way penguins work is they do get paired for a long time. Basically, the only other penguin they care about is their mate, so it’s important for them to find somebody who’s compatible, and if you don’t have a normal upbringing then it’s difficult to say how ‘normal’ they can be.”

Status: offline 		I looked in other forums, except P&R. Seriously? Come on. It's definitely not a religious issue, unless you worship at the House of Penguins. And what on earth could it have to do with politics? The zoo wants to propogate the species. And it isn't as if they will be permanently apart. The media is the one spinning it the way they did. The closest to politics it could possibly be is as an example why public zoos shouldn't exist.

Status: offline 		they're putting them with females to see IF they bond. i'm sure if they don't bond with the females, the zoo will return them to each other. they're an endangered species, though, and it's part of the zoo's job to keep breeding programs going.

i have to agree, it's being spun into some kind of anti-gay fervor story, and that's not what it is at all.

Status: offline 		One of them was paired with a female until she died and they did have eggs, so they are hopeful he will again give some attention to a female. Which would I guess make him a bisexual, polyamorous penguin?

something to do with the human parallels being political and religious
seeing as many "funnymentalists", claim that GAY is a human choice.

You know, after I came back from an appointment I came back to this thread, and something that people don't seem to be considering is that it is pretty much evidence that homosexuality/bisexuality DOES exist in nature.

You would think someone would jump on the implications of that fact when it comes to human sexuality being a choice.

Status: offline 		there are more than 450 species of animals that have been recognised as having bi/homo relationships. Female foxes are well known to be very bi poly:)
But usually the same people who dont buy the "nature of the world" think that dinosaurs and adam grew up together

people have; this isn't the first pair of gay penguins, or maybe they are the first pair (they've been together for aeons) and were followed by reports of others.
there are all kinds of animals who exhibit the tendency. people have raised it as significant, but other people who choose to continue believing otherwise find any manner of reasons and excuses for why it's aberrant and insignificant.

in the article about the penguins, one of the keepers said that he believed it was a by-product of captivity; that strange things happen in captivity that may not happen in the wild. i do believe similar cases have been observed in the wild, though.

but i think that question is something they aren't prepared to deal with, and they want these birds to raise chicks in a typical male-female set up in case the offspring learn "weird" behaviors from watching homosexual parents. some people still very much believe it's a learned behavior.

I disagree. The reality is that regardless of the penguins choices, Pedro and Buddy can NOT create offspring together. As an endangered species, the offspring is important. The concern is that if kept together, they will never procreate. The fact that if they refuse to mate, the zoo is open about the fact that Buddy and Pedro will be put back together says a lot about the zoo's concern about their well-being.

but anyway, i agree that since they can't create them together, that's the entire reason why they're being separated, and apparently one of them had bonded well with a female until she died. so it isn't anything new. the birds will go back together, and it isn't some huge anti-gay propaganda like people want it to be.
they're endangered and they need to make more of them, and like it or not, two gay birds won't make more birds.

Exactly. And the article only talks about putting them together for "breeding season," which would indicate the time it takes for the two to create fertilized eggs.

I guess the big question now is, after Buddy and Pedro being together for so long, will they take to the idea of someone else? Not all that different from humans, huh?

I REALLY NEED to tangentalize here (that means hijack).

Why don't they put all the mufugs in a room and just leave them alone so nature can take it's course. If they're anything like human anlimals, with nothing better to do they will have orgies, gangbangs and so forth.

Then they can go on Maury for a fucking paternity test. The only way to get it free.

Going to go out on a limb here and say because they are worried dear Buddy and Pedro are so commited to each other, they will have their orgy without the females, making it (pardon the pun), fruitless.

There was also something about the "genes" of the penguins. They didn't make it clear whether these two have incredibly good genes over the others or not, but for whatever reason, they want to exert some control in an effort to keep the species from dieing out.
