Pretty darn good. I said, or tried to, "Vienna is really fantastic. My grandfather came from Vienna. I have not travelled to Prague. But I still love Munich. The Museums, especially both the Old and New Pinakoteks, are world-class.

Calamity's from Cologne (Köln).
The thing about Bavaria is, it's not like the rest of Germany. King Ludwig's castles (the Disney castle was modelled after Neueschwanstein) have to be seen to be believed.

And there's a Gummi-Bear store right in the heart of Munich!

But the original Haribo (Gummi-Bear) store is in Bonn, near Cologne, too.

And yes, Neuschwanstein is unbelievable, like something out of a dream. The castles I was talking about are completely different. They have been lived in during the middle ages, when they have been so called "working" castles, as opposed to representative ones like Neuschwanstein.

I would like to put in my vote for Prague as well, so much to see and experience there. It feels like history is still alive there, mingling with modern culture, giving the place an unique feel. And great beer, of course.

The historical places in the Mediterranean, of course. And yes, Istanbul. The city on two continents, where Orient and Occident meet.

AAAAAHHHH! Too much to see and too little time, lol. I've allowed myself a month. I know I can cut the cruise and get an extra week, but I really want the cruise, lol. Th QM2 is pure luxury, and after the last 5 years of hell, it would be such a treat for myself.

I think you need to get down to the nitty gritty and make a list of things that are truly important for you.
What period of history fascinates you the most, which aspects of culture do want to experience, which things do you really, really want to see or do.

There are the sad, but nonetheless important parts of history too. The landing beach in the Normandy, Dachau, Ausschwitz, or other KZ, the Jewish Ghetto.

Or going farther back, places like the Montsegur.

Maybe Jerusalem, as part of the Mediterranean tour.

I want to see as much as I can in the time I have. Amsterdam is a must, the Anne Frank Museum and the VanGogh exhibit. I would like to visit one of the camps for sure. Italy is in the top of the list, as is Paris. Germany, of course is the primary purpose for the trip, but will leave a good portion of the planning of that to my friend. Let her show me her country her way. It would be nice to visit the UK, Ireland, Scotland, Spain.

There is no narrowing down, lol. I'm leaving it up to my travel agent, who I trust to help me plan the trip. He understands what I want, is more well versed in the right seasons and such, and knows I have been through some rough times and am looking for a nice escape for a while.

Dachau is a suburb of Munich. Calamity would know if there are any KZ memorials closer to Essen. Also, in Essen you aren't all that far from the Rheingau wine country. These are not that "Blue Nun" crap. I personally think the best ones come from around Rauenthal, but it's all a matter of taste.

Amsterdam has a cool Anthropological museum - http://www.amsterdam.info/museums/tropenmuseum/

and you have to see the Flower Market. Try some of the aged cheeses, too.

Paris: The Louvre is a must. Go up the Eiffel Tower too. Watch for pickpockets in Paris. They are world-class. You can buy some Truffles for your friends in the UK; do your research. Mixed reviews about La Maison de la Truffe. And Petrossian Caviar... if you have time, visit Versailles. (Bavaria has better castles, though...

) Paris is for Vietnamese; Amsterdam for Indonesian Rijstaffel, and London for fantastic Indian (Try Red Fort in Soho). Go up on the London Eye. Take a day trip to Liverpool, if you like the Beatles. The British Museum has a copy of the Magna Carta. The flea markets are amazing.

Pity you aren't going to Berlin.

Yup, I've taken trans-Atlantic and European cruises. In the U.S. Navy.
But, if you're over in Europe look into taking a cruise down the Shannon in Ireland.
I haven't been but all the people who I talked to who did take that cruise were very happy with it. I think it takes 2 days.
Also, look into cruises on the Danube and in Germany too!
I really wouldn't be interested in those "party" cruises down to the Carribean stuffing yourself with food and too many drunks, lounge singers and bad entertainment.
You might contact a travel agent and ask for some brochures on European cruises.

river cruises on the Danube: Regensburg to Passau in Bavaria, around Vienna/Wachau in Austria, also Vienna to Bratislava (all 1 day or 2 day trips)
if you want German/European culture good and sad alike: visit Weimar, home of most of the famous German 18thc poets like Wieland, Herder, Goethe, Schiller asf with Buchenwald concentration camp within sight ...
