This. The whole "people are trying to be helpful," just doesn't fly with me. Often with the stuff that comes in my email, a little common sense would tell you it is ridiculous, you don't even need Snopes.

My favorites are the "Microsoft and so and so have gotten together to track your email. Forward this and you will get..."

I mean really, common sense tells you that even if they WERE tracking your email, they have no need to give you a prize. I once got something like that from someone and the "so and so" was claimed to be Walt Disney's son, and of course the "prize" a free trip to Disneyworld. That was the one I hit "reply all." Walt Disney didn't even have a son, only daughters.

I have a friend who sends me all that shit. Every "danger warning," "product causes cancer," and of course the ever popular "anti-Obama," and "America is going to hell in a hand basket." She also sends along jokes, and lots of "honor our military" stuff. I think she just clicks to forward to everyone in her email, lol.

Sadly, there is no point in trying to get her to think first, as there is no point with trying to get anyone to think first. Like littlewonder said, these people believe everything they read (reminds me of a recent OP). Even if they think they are being helpful, the point that they are gullible enough to believe the stuff to begin with is what will make the difference.

Of course, these same people don't simply copy and paste either. So you get a ton of previous addresses before you even get to the email.

As to the second quesstion, I have never used Snopes in regards to political or religous things. I tend to ignore them anyway. I use Snopes for the "danger" emails and the "do this and get" emails. Well, I used to. Now I just delete it all, mentally dismissed as bullshit.

Don't we all. I let the repeat offenders know that while I'm always happy to get a personal message from them, forwarding all this crap spreads more than misinformation; this is an efficient way to proliferate computer viruses, worms, and trojans (no, NOT the fun kind!). I tell them in no uncertain terms to take me off their forward list and if I get another forwarded email from them, I block their address and let them know they'll have to call if they want to get in touch. So far it's worked quite well...there's only one friend and one relative who can't quite get with the program. They're 80 and 93 respectively; both still amazed and amused by the concept of email. I indulge them out of respect for my elders knowing one day in the near future their forwards, however annoying, will stop all together.
