Boss Told Me To Stop Giving Dying Co-Worker CPR, Says Service Rep
quote:

Last month, a Time Warner Cable customer service rep died at her desk. After any unexpected death, people searched for answers, explanations, someone to blame. But in this case, there may have actually been something foul afoot. A local news station reports that after a co-worker began giving CPR to 67-year-old Julia Nelson, a supervisor allegedly told her to stop and "GET BACK ON THE PHONE AND TAKE CARE OF CUSTOMERS."

Nelson slumped at her desk at the Time Warner Call Center in Garfield Heights, Ohio, and wasn't breathing by the time paramedics arrived. But before that happened, a co-worker rushed over and began administering CPR, the woman told WOIO, only to be asked to stop. Employees at the scene have confirmed this report.

The woman was also told later by another supervisor that she could be "held liable if something goes wrong."

Ohio has a "Good Samaritan" law on the books, however, which protects bystanders who provide emergency aid from being sued for unintentional injury or wrongful death....

Police are reviewing the incident...

Want to place a bet that, even if the police can confirm that the Time-Warner supervisor told the employee to stop giving the dying co-worker CPR and "GET BACK ON THE PHONE AND TAKE CARE OF CUSTOMERS.", no action will be taken against the supervisor?

In today' American capitalist society, you can only take actions to try to save a co-worker's life if you are on your break or your lunch hour or if you clock out first so that the company won't have to pay you for "their time" that you are using to try to save a co-worker's life.

The Washington Bar did something similar about 15 years ago. Someone taking the bar exam had a heart attack. the other exam takers who administered CPR were not given additional time to finish the exam.

When I first started working at my former workplace and the rules were gone over I was told that if someone was ill or having a medical situation we were to call 911 and then HR but in no way were we to do more than "make them comfortable" which basically meant talk to them, offer a glass of water, lie them on the floor or something like that. The reason we were given...so that we or the business were not held responsible.

There was the constant worry and talk about liability and being sued pretty much every minute of the day there. UGH

Easy enough solution. Single Payer Universal Health Care. Bye bye company worries or liabilities.

I would have told the boss to fuck off, and continued giving CPR.

I gotta say though, something about this smells funny.  Time will tell.

In today' American capitalist society...

America doesn't have a capitalist system today. Please, look up what capitalism is, and compare it to the system in place in the USA. The differences are far greater than the similiarities - so much so that calling it capitalist is like calling the mainstream news corporations "the free press", or calling the bombing and looting of the Middle East "liberation".
Even many of the OWS protestors think the USA has capitalism, as evidenced by their cries for "the end of this capitalist system". Capitalism isn't perfect, but it isn't the problem with Wall Street. The problem with Wall Street is primarily corruption by the few for unjust gain over the majority. The protestors know the current system is rigged and unsustainable. They just need to realize capitalism isn't necessarily the problem, because we don't have capitalism and increasingly haven't for decades.

Well, being the giver I am, I will happily volunteer to give the asshole who said go back to work a good jolt of electricity.  Lemme get these two wires stripped and attached to his nipples......

So, is this the appropriate time to talk about a group of 7 Fortune 500 companies that I work with on a regular basis?

Ones who have - at their own expense - ensured that not only is a defibrillator on every floor of every building they own (thousands), but that there is someone trained in their use?

Who subsidizes and requires a certain number of employees be trained and certified in CPR?

Companies which start each meeting of more than two people with a safety briefing, in which these people are expressly identified, along with egress routes in case of an emergency, and identifying who will call 911, and who will lead the medics to the sick or injured person?

No, what, I must be lying ... successful capitalist companies are evil, and want people to die.  Geez, what was I thinking!  It must all be faked shit, to fool the peons ... and I got taken in ...

Firm

That is what I was actually thinking Firm.  I work at a small school, and we have 3 defibrillators. I know at the county offices there is at least one on every floor.

It may just be the moron supervisor that smells funny, or the worker, who wants to be thought of as a coulda been a  hero, but something just aint right.

As Tazzy and I have said, time will tell...it always does.
