"Flakes! Flakes!
Flakes! Flakes!
They don't do no good
They never be workin'
When they oughta should
They waste your time
They're wastin' mine
California's got the most of them
Boy, they got a host of them

Swear t'God they got the most
At every business on the coast
Swear t'God they got the most
At every business on the coast
They got the Flakes

Flakes! Flakes!

They can't fix yer brakes
You ask 'em, "Where's my motor?"
"Well, it was eaten by snakes..."
You can stab 'n' shoot 'n' spit
But they won't be fixin' it
They're lyin' an' lazy
They can be drivin' you crazy

Swear t'God they got the most
At every business on the coast
Swear t'God they got the most
At every business on the coast
Take it away, Bob...

I asked as nice as I could
If my job would
Somehow be finished by Friday
Well, them whole damn weekend
came 'n' went, Frankie
Wanna buy some mandies, Bob?
'N' they didn't do nothin'
But they charged me double for Sunday

You know, no matter what you do,
They gonna cheat 'n' rob you
Then they'll send you a bill
That'll get your senses reelin'
And if you do not pay
They got computer collectors
That'll get you so crazy
'Til your head'll go through th' ceilin'
Yes it will!

I'm a moron, 'n' this is my wife
She's frosting a cake
With a paper knife
All what we got here's
American made
It's a little bit cheesey,
But it's nicely displayed
Well we don't get excited when it
Crumbles 'n' breaks
We just get on the phone
And call up some Flakes
They rush on over
'N' wreck it some more
'N' we are so dumb
They're linin' up at our door
Well, the toilet went crazy
Yersterday afternoon
The plumber he says
Never flush a tampoon!
This great information
Cost me half a week's pay
And the toilet blew up
Later on the next day-ay-eee-ay
Blew up the next day
WOO-OOO

We are millions 'n' millions,
We're coming to get you
We're protected by unions
So don't let it upset you
Can't escape the conclusion
It's probably God's Will
That civilization
Will grind to a standstill
And we are the people
Who will make it all happen
While yer children is sleepin',
Yer puppy is crappin'
You might call us Flakes
Or something else you might coin us
But we know you're so greedy
That you'll probably join us

We're coming to get you, we're coming to get you
We're coming to get you, we're coming to get you
We're coming to get you, we're coming to get you
We're coming to get you, we're coming to get you..."

Mano! I don't think I'm even gonna bother; I'm just goona find another convection oven (possibly GE Profile, if I can find one discounted or used)

Post your repair nightmares here. Everybody's Got One...

Why didn't you just buy a JenAir in the first place ?

I would contribute if I could but my family has almost never had anything serviced by a "professional". We didn't just fix our own cars we practically built them. Appliances, well you buy new once, then used. It either takes a year or a decade. really, even with a million bucks there are many things I would buy used. (most in fact)

But since I am involved in the repair business I can tell you with certainty that there is alot of incompetence out there. It really doesn't help when the product is poorly designed either. And they are. There was a time when it was smart to buy a US made product but unfortunately those days are over. Really, there was a time when alot of people would never consider buying a foreign car, talk about a turnaround !

And what's more it is made special for our market. Certain cars purchased in Europe for example, use like three sizes of nuts and bolts and may even come with a toolkit, like some did a very long time ago here. The same car made for the US market, you need fourteen different sizes, Torx, triplesquares, inverted Torx, and a few other things. And tell me the real reason you ever really need a spanner wrench for anything, I don't mean you have to buy one to fix something, I mean why is the spanner bolt or nut used by the manufacturer ? You can save a millimeter of space in a device that weighs a ton. Ridiculous.

I have seen the inside of the industry and not only are the products designed to fail and be as difficult as possible to repair, factory training is a fucking joke. Even people with brains wil not comprehend this shit, because it doesn't make sense in the first place. I can provide tangible proof that things are designed to fail and be difficult to repair. I can also provide tangible proof that factory training for service prersonnel is usually a fucking joke.

But then I guess I really don't have to.

unless it's something I can fix myself on an appliance, I no longer even bother calling a repairman. It's cheaper just to replace the appliance.

No, not everyone has a repair nightmare. You see, my son is an appliance repairman and a good one. He diagnoses all my repairs via the phone. I tell him what it's doing, not doing, or the noise it's making and he orders the correct part.

Yes, I am crazy about feathered creatures. I have a dozen chickens, 3 ducks, 5 geese, and 2 parakeets.

Revise that number. Just got 14 new chicks and 5 turkeys.

Lucy, that sounds about right.....all the gas company wants to do is sell you something!  Usually at overblown prices as it is!  You'd be farther ahead to check the manufacturer of the unit.....that's what my dad did when their furnace quit.  He got the part shipped to him, and put the thing in in about 30 minutes.

Usually depending on the appliance, I just toss the broken one.  Everything these days seems to be throwaway.  My mom paid $2000 for her first microwave/convection oven......now you can get a microwave for $40.  Nothing is built to last these days.....my mom has replaced two refrigerators in the last 10 years, and the freezer they got the year I was born is still humming away in the garage.  I was born in 1960.  The only reason she had to give up her Magic Chef gas stove was that it was so old, there was no part to convert it from natural gas to propane.  It killed her to let go of it.....it's probably still in use by the lady she gave it to!

I rent, so for the most part, don't have to deal with the repair stuff, but I know landlords that HATE it when appliances die.  It costs them just to have someone come out to look at the damn thing......let alone start to fix it!  An honest one will at least tell you it's cheaper to buy a new one than fix the old one......they might be hard to find, tho.

"unless it's something I can fix myself on an appliance, I no longer even bother calling a repairman"

Stoves deal with gas in pipes or high current wiring. Even fom my standpoinmt as someone who fixes almost everything, you are right.

"You see, my son is an appliance repairman and a good one. He diagnoses all my repairs via the phone. I tell him what it's doing, not doing, or the noise it's making and he orders the correct part."

There was a shop in the area that actually did that for the public, but they went out of business. We used to deal with them all the time, the deal was you can have us do it or do it yourself. Good folks actualy, reasonable prices and for the expensive stuff they did sell some used parts. Of course "consumers" who can't even figure out a coffee maker without instructions might not do as well there.

"we just had our furnace give up the ghost, hubby says motor has gone, calls up the gas company,"

The biggest motor in there is the blower motor and it might be a hundred bucks. Well less because of CDN but more because of taxes, so a hundred. It could vary but the thing is to order or even pick up the new motor from a place like WW Grainger. You have to put the motor on the frame and reattach the blade (squirrel cage unless you reall live in the stix) unless you but the whole blower assembly. Peole did that in the old days with belt friven blowers because there were bearings in the motor as well as the blower part which wear out, but in most modern ones the motor bearings ARE the blower (squirrell cge) bearings. It's a matter of getting the righht motor, taking the old blades off and the new on and putting the whole mess back together. For more like $300 you should be able to get the assembly which slides right in. The secret to know is that a furnace company is not a blower, gas valvem burner, electric element or any of that - kind of compnay. All they are is a sheetmetal company and they use off the shelf components. Grainger is the palce where that shelf is.

That means alot of other things as well.

I seriously doubt that Canadian law makes a problem for you to order parts from them, but if it does I can fix that.

"My mom paid $2000 for her first microwave/convection oven......now you can get a microwave for $40"

Umm, is it still working ? I'd almost bet it is. Or could be, they were built to last.

Never heard of Dacor. I will say that I will never get another LG fridge. The coils are on the back so you have to pull the damn thing out every couple of months to clean it.
