The players my brothers The fireman is driving, Wado is trimming the jib and me I'm the Rear Admiral <don't ask> If it's summer this is where I am sailing the great lakes. In the meantime they filmed what firemen do in their off duty time. Sailing of course. Here is the clip http://vimeo.com/27747958 password "outcold" FYI when a freighter toots his horn 5 times it means "hurry your ass up get outta my way before I run your ass over" I really don't wanna be that close to a 800 ft freighter again.

Done a bit of racing. Crewed on a C&C40 in New England for a bit. Downwind was always the beer leg.

I ve sailed on cal 25 to a Frers 50 and everything in between. Pics in profile. One of my most memorable sails was bringing a boat back from the mac race <a couple hundred miles> We hit this storm blowing bout 30 waves 10 to 12 middle of the night in Lake Huron lightening pooping off everywhere. What a ride! I could swap sea stories with you all day.

Too bad you the wrong sex... as I might take you up on your sailing offer.

Yeah, heard a bit of how the Great Lakes can be a bitch when the weather goes sour..

41' is a Frers design. First boat I had was a Pearson 36. I've been to Bermuda (love Dark & Stormys) four times, down island twice, and as far around as Louisiana. Solo'd USVI to Bermuda. Was going to do the next leg solo to RI but got conned into taking on a guy who'd been thrown off his boat. Got to RI and he said he'd service the winches. He put the paws in backwards. Anyone interested in a 41' woody I know where there will be one for sale soon. Not sure of the price but I am pretty sure it'll be under fifty. Been taken care of, painted every year and all that. Dude says with them sails it gets great gas mileage.

Is it still called gas mileage when it's deisel ?

If that's $50- that might be OK. If it's $50k, I suspect that somebody is dreaming, but I don't know the prices on big boats well. It's just that woodies require so much maintenance, the initial $$ is irrelevant. My rule of thumb is the most expensive boat you own is the one that you pay the least for up front.

Of course I was teasing nothing serious about racing... It's always been more about beer drinking and hanging out with friends. I'd thought I share the sport with folks that have not been sailing before.

I spent a week aboard a 50', steel hulled, Junk rigged boat in Mexico a few years ago. Not a yacht (but when we were in the marina we wrre docked next to quite afew)..

fuck the sailing.. where's the beer?? lol


I'm hoping to do that again in a year or two.. depends on schedules...

That looked like fun! I've been sailing a few times on my uncle's boat <my crew position was always "decoration">, I liked it!

And it was fun to see the freighter, it's been a while. Most of the men in my family work in, on, or around the freighters and have for generations.

Thanks for posting it, it brought back memories in a few ways. [:)]

I think they used the term "decoration" because I was rather young at the time, today I might qualify as "rail meat" or a "boat bitch", but not back then. That was before I had developed any real eye candy qualities, if you get my drift. [;)]

Then you need to sail on something smaller- and more exciting- where your stature works for you. In the dinghies I sail (www.thistleclass.com), we're always on the lookout for forward crews (we race with three) in the 110-125 lb category. Warning-racing on a small boat is quite different than on a keelboat- we each have a lot to do and nobody is "decoration".
