Actually Steve Jobs was a Buddhist, having spent time in India and converting when he left college. He was also married by a Zen Buddhist Monk.

Very interesting and thank you.
Does not change the point, though.

Are you kidding?
Just because you have a belief system doesn't mean that others don't have a right to have their own. And express them. Whether or not you agree with their personal beliefs doesn't mean it's acceptable behavior to make snide comments when others are expressing freaking condolences.
That's just shows poor manners and really is acting kinda boorish.

(edited to add that with that said, I'm bowing out of this commentary. My principle reason for saying something was that I thought it was undignified to derail a condolences/appreciation type thread so I won't be the one to do that)

I agree with you wholeheartedly.

What an interesting, fascinating life he must have lived! Shine on, Steve.

No it doesn't. The point was stupid before and it still is.

Wow.  He started Apple, Pixar, and NeXt.  Two home runs and a dud.

NeXT was far from a dud.  As a development platform it had no equal and it's NeXTSTEP OS was the foundation that became Mac OS X.  Large amounts parts of that code live on in current versions of Mac OS and was even used in the iPhone.

I didn't know that.  It was a dud from a business point of view, but evidently a success technically.

littlewonder -> RE: Rest In Peace Steve Jobs (10/6/2011 8:35:20 AM)

It doesn't change that what you said was absolutely stupid. It does change the fact that being a Buddhist he would have had zero problems with anyone at all praying for him and he would have actually taken it as a sign of respect.

May the genius of our time rest in peace. We probably won't see another like him for a very long time to come.

He will be sadly missed.

Except for that one thing, he fits the stereotype that theyre after

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Rest In Peace Steve Jobs (10/6/2011 12:48:34 PM)

One of the sad thing about Steve Jobs dying so young is that often these wildly successful business men have a second career as philanthropists. Even that pirate Bill Gates is now spending his retirement spending his fortune to help people. Steve jobs will never have that chance, and that is a huge loss for all of us

Moonhead -> RE: Rest In Peace Steve Jobs (10/6/2011 12:56:13 PM)

Was it ever very likely that Jobs would give any of his money to charity in the first place? He really never came across as the type, and turned down offers to chip in a contribution towards a few of the causes Wozniak was supporting in the '80s.

littlewonder -> RE: Rest In Peace Steve Jobs (10/6/2011 12:56:48 PM)

I have a feeling he probably gave a lot...just anonymously. I don't think he had any desire for it to be known to the world or feel that it was just a publicity stunt like many celebrities do. I think he saw Bill Gates using philanthropy to boost his image and simply did not desire to be a part of that. He didn't need to. His charisma and character did that for him.

Actually, it wasn't a success technically. The only reason the Next OS was the basis for OSX was that Jobs was already in the company as an interim CEO by then, and insisted that they buy it out from Next or he wouldn't play with them anymore.
There were other candidates in the running as well: it's a pity Gil Amnelio wanted too much money and Jobs started throwing his weight about, as the BeOS would likely have been a much better bet for the next gen Mac OS.

Sorry, but I really can't buy that: if Jobs had been writing cheques to charities, he'd have made sure that everybody knew about it.

I don't know about anyone else, but I was absolutely shocked when I saw the headline on the news. Jobs has impacted so many lives in one way or another. He was truly a genius, truly a visionary, and truly the poster child for entrepreneurship.

The world will miss him.

I was pretty shocked too, he only just barely resigned yesterday it seems.. guess he worked as long as he possibly could, which i am amazed about.. that is not to say he was perfect by any stretch (who is?), but he had some very admirable attributes.. it will be interesting to me to read his autobiography..

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Rest In Peace Steve Jobs (10/6/2011 1:31:49 PM)

Well, I am not quite as prepared to say I know what Steve Jobs was thinking, like some on here are, and obviously, we will never know what he would have done.  But, the hard driving magnate who has a second career as a philanthropist is practically a stereotype, and for a good reason.  Nothing I ever read about Bill Gates when he was younger would have made you thing he was going to establish an extremely well funded, foundation.  See, for example, Robert X. Cringely's- Accidental Empires: How the Boys of Silicon Valley Make Their Millions, Battle Foreign Competition, and Still Can't Get a Date.  In Gates' case, he waited until he had a clear successor for the business, felt everything was on comfortable ground, and then had time to devote to his foundation..  Now you can barely go anywhere that is supported by donations, at least in this state, without seeing as a donor the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  Paul Allen is also quite generous.  I see no reason why Steve Jobs wouldn't have done the same thing.  I imagine it was not important to him the last few years because he was so consumed by his illness.
