New GOP frontrunner says your state can take away your guns
quote:

In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer earlier this week, former pizza executive and GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain took a surprisingly liberal view on gun control:
quote:

BLITIZER: Let’s talk about gun control. Do you support any gun control?

CAIN: I support the Second Amendment.

BLITZER: So you don’t? What’s the answer on gun control?

CAIN: The answer on gun control is I support, strongly support, the Second Amendment. I don’t support onerous legislation that’s going to restrict people’s rights in order to be able to protect themselves as guaranteed by the Second Amendment.

BLITZER: Should states or local governments be allowed to pass laws on guns . . .

CAIN: Yes

BLITZER: So the answer is yes?

CAIN: Yes. The answer is yes, that should be a state’s decision.

Cain’s position — that Congress can’t regulate guns but states can — not only places him well to the left of the NRA, it also places him at odds with the Supreme Court...

To be fair to Cain, however, it is much more likely that he simply doesn’t know anything about the Second Amendment than that he actually is staking out a somewhat liberal position on guns. In his first Sunday show interview, Cain exposed his utter ignorance of foreign policy by not understanding what the Palestinian “right of return” is. Cain launched his campaign with a speech that mixed up the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. He claimed that Congress is powerless to regulate bankruptcy, even though the Constitution says exactly the opposite. And he embraced a wildly unconstitutional plan to force Islamic federal employees to swear a loyalty oath.

First - Bachmann

Then - Perry

Now - Cain

Mitt Romney must be smiling...

Watch your back, Fight. There are some people around here who would like to shut you up.

The story is months old, and your source is far from unbiased. Herman seems to have a good learning curve, and I'm sure he's gotten some more nuance into his stock answer now. Different states have all sorts of different laws regarding guns. The Supreme Court says there is an individual right they cannot deny. What's the problem?

There's a big difference between passing laws on guns and taking them away period.

Someone is being alarmist.

Good ol' Herman may know about pizza - but he sure doesn't know much about the U.S. Constitution.

As I said - Mitt Romney must be loving this. Everytime Bachmann, Perry, Cain or Santorum opens their mouths - he's one step closer to the GOP nomination.

You can always tell when a Republican is gaining a little traction: just look for the Directo hit piece on CM.

To be fair, I think Mr. Cain simply got confused on the subject. That he implied it was the state's right to decide on gun control (under the 10th Amendment). However, if that is true, than a state could ban firearms and not be in violation of the 2nd Amendment (assuming individuals and not a 'well-regulated militia' can have firearms). He wants it to work both ways, and that's not how it does work. Likewise, its a bit concerning that Mr. Blitzer could easily confuse Mr Cain like that. Do you really want someone that can be easily confused by the topic in a handful of sentences as your president? We tried that with Bush Jr, and LOOK WHAT HAPPENED.....

Now, now, joether.  Many on the right would consider Bush, Jr. to be the best president we've ever had.  At the very least, one of the top five; above any Democratic president we've ever had.

I'd be happy with a president who knew that there are,..... "50 states."
These days will be known as,...."The Obama time."
Never thought I'd be pining for the Clinton years and all his hyjincs in the White house!
Having Obama in there is like getting hit in the face with a wet sponge.

And your post has what importance to this discussion, pops? We aren't talking about President Obama. I know, I said 'president' and your knee jerk reaction kicked your head with 'President Obama', but we REALLY aren't talking about Mr. Obama. In fact, we aren't even talking about the Democrats! We are talking about....THE OTHER PARTY.....pops. Get with the discussion!

Since we are NOT talking about the President, but ARE talking about the various Republican candidates - does anyone here have a comment on my idea that statements like this by Cain, Bachman, Perry, etc. are helping Romney win the GOP nomination?

I believe they are. The crazier or the less informed Cain, Bachman, Perry, etc. appear, the more likely that the GOP will nominate Romney as their Presidential candidate.

Personally, I think Romney has the best chance of picking up the independent vote and defeating Obama.

He hasn't been exactly dynamic but he hasn't done anything crashingly stupid or polarizing either.

Fight, I do. How many people in the country are even aware of that interview?
And how many people in the country even watch those debates?
We won't know who the nominee is until the republican convention in.....?
I'm not a republican but I wouldn't mind having Cain or Romney in the W.H.
They're both good managers unlike the present bad situation.

We now want a "good manager" in the WH?

Oh the irony.
