I've always liked British t.v. and British police shows in particular.
This series was on American t.v. in the 1990's.
Take a look.

Don't know about the best - but, yep, one the UK's best, at least. Well worth a watch.

PS - I might seek out the episodes of 'Homicide: Life on the Street' that I missed as a result of their being cut from the schedules here. Possibly my favourite police TV series ever.

Yeah Prime Suspect is excellent but as far as Brit cop shows go, I much prefer Cracker.

Oh you wanker! I was going to suggest Homicide!

For a more action oriented choice, I'd totally say The Shield.

Peon for her, I think the "cop shows" in the U.S. are pale in comparison to the ones in England.
Special effects, car chases, everyone yelling at each other, I haven't watched any for years now except for maybe 5 minutes when I'm channel surfing and reminded that I'm not missing anything.

Probably the only thing Pops and I agree on, Helen Mirren Kicks Ass in Prime suspect, and Im looking to get the american version thats just started up, but I dont think it will be better.
Cracker was brilliant.
I loved Waking the Dead with Trevor Eve and from the US The WIre

Prime Suspect is regularly on our public television stations, but oh my gosh, I had forgotten all about Cracker! Thanks for that.

You're welcome I cried when a British friend of mine told me it had been cancelled.

There is a brand spanking new American version of Prime Suspect called.. (wait for it).. "Prime Suspect"... Maria bello stars as Mirrens part.. the first episode is free on hulu
http://www.hulu.com/watch/280306/prime-suspect-episode-1

I love Wire in the Blood, its british too, with Robson Green (swoon)
only seasons 4 & 5 are free to watch on hulu, you need to subscribe to see them all.. great show too.
http://www.hulu.com/wire-in-the-blood

There are so many great British shows and movies.. I dont know what it is.. they are more.. gritty or something...

Just downloaded it TJ, but im not hoping for much

the US prime suspect that is.
Personally for me its the drama without guns blazing that makes it gritty.
but thats not to say I dont like violence or shoot em ups in my tv watching

no, its definately not in the same league.. but beggars cant be chosers.. since the original wont be made anymore and i have seen all the originals a gazillion times..

You would probably like the other one I mentioned much better tho.. I think i saw all 5 seasons when they were still all free to watch..

Im gonna look at it, I can get the downloads but thanks for the recommendation.
Ill let you know how I find it.I was weaned on brit cop shows, and Im the same with US ones, until they try to re do a brit one, then its rarely as good as the original, but there are plenty of good US ones out there.
Helen Mirren is one of my very favourite actresses, and has been since her role in caligula, so its hard for me to see anyone do her "role".

For me one of the best british TV cop shows was Dalziel and Pascoe - the early episodes especially. The original theme tune by Barrington Pheloung (it was replaced with some bland sound crap) is exceptional. A small bit of it features here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrY7GnxS6bs

Aside from that Live on Mars was also excellent before Ashes to Ashes took over which was a bit crappy by comparison. Both Dalziel and Pascoe and Live on Mars feature macho reactionary non-PC male lead characters. Thats pretty important in good cop shows IMO!
