What works for other gardeners locally doesn't always work for me. I have a microclimate that varies substantially from the rest of the county. I tried planting quick maturing varieties, but I am still two weeks behind everyone else.
Fortunately we are supposed to have a day or two of rain, and then it will warm up again. So maybe, just maybe, those little bastards will turn red yet. If not, I will be doing a side by side comparison of the various methods of ripening tomatoes off the vine.

So, I usually just buy heirloom starter plants in 4 inch pots. I had heard that buying the gallon sized plants was a waste. But would that help them grow and get off to a better start? This is not the first I have had trouble maturing tomatoes.

It does help. The seedlings are much younger than the plants in the big planters. Also try and get toatoes bred for your climate zone and put them out as soon as the night time temp is reliably over 50 degrees.

Hopefully, it was just an exceptionally crappy year.  I am 2 weeks behind the rest of the county when it comes to my garden, so that is part of it.  June was really cold here.  July wasn't much better.  Still, my 90 year old mother raises tomatoes in Billings MT, so I know it can be done.
Next year, I am getting the larger plants.  Thanks for tip.  I suppose I could do the walls of water things too, but there is only so much effort I want to put into this project.
