Saudi king gives women right to vote...

Isnt that wild?

DarkSteven -> RE: Saudi king gives women right to vote... (9/25/2011 7:31:29 AM)

Wild indeed.  Here's the Yahoo version: http://news.yahoo.com/saudi-king-says-women-political-role-115527157.html

I'm not able to comprehend the workings of the Saudi system to see how this will translate into actual policy and practices.  But for a conservative country like SA, this is massive.

It is good that he is trying.    (bad that it was not legal for so long)

...I wonder if this means they can drive?

Nope.  The Yahoo article specifically states that the prohibition on women's driving is not affected.

I would be more upset over not being able to drive.

littlewonder -> RE: Saudi king gives women right to vote... (9/25/2011 8:08:01 AM)

Women in Saudi Arabia usually don't have a problem with not driving because by law you are supposed to be always escorted by a male so the male escort drives.

As for women voting, I think that the government there is realizing the decisions of women there have been making great strides for their country and the king is sympathetic to women there actually. From what I've been told there are other laws there he would like to change but there is pressure from Imams and other members of the government there for the country to stay with their traditions within their religion.

It might be a good idea to not let women drive in this country.

Awesome! Now if they could stop funding terrorism, and maybe helping big oil manipulate pricing, I might stop thinking of them as cave dwellers with a gold card.

Personally I have no problem with women having the vote either! [:D]

Saudi Arabia has been slow to move with the times. They only abolished slavery in 1962 and apparently it still exists to a significant extent.

Oh Puuuuuullllllllease!

DAY AFTER FUCKING DAY WE LIVE THROUGH THE MIDDLE EAST'S SO-CALLED "GROWING PAINS" as I heard them described earlier this year, by my Syrian friend Gus.
Who by the way has had to translate some truly awful utterances about Americans to me over the years.
Who do I thank for the patriot act?[:D]

What that means from my perspective is "IT'S ABOUT TIME THEY STARTED GETTING THEIR ACT AT LEAST INTO THE 20TH CENTURY"

The have newer cars than they do social policy
