Sanity -> Heads up - falling satellite tonight (9/23/2011 3:59:00 PM)

IF it comes down over you it should make for a good show, possibly as bright as a full moon

Falling satellite slows down, Earth strike delayed

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A 6-ton NASA satellite on a collision course with Earth clung to space Friday, apparently flipping position in its ever-lower orbit and stalling its death plunge.

The old research spacecraft was targeted to crash through the atmosphere sometime Friday night or early Saturday, putting the U.S. back in the potential crosshairs, although most of the satellite should burn up during re-entry.

"It just doesn't want to come down," said Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

McDowell said the satellite's delayed demise demonstrates how unreliable predictions can be. That said, "the best guess is that it will still splash in the ocean, just because there's more ocean out there."

Until Friday, increased solar activity was causing the atmosphere to expand and the 35-foot, bus-size satellite to free fall more quickly. But late Friday morning, NASA said the sun was no longer the major factor in the rate of descent and that the satellite's position, shape or both had changed by the time it slipped down to a 100-mile orbit."In the last 24 hours, something has happened to the spacecraft," said NASA orbital debris scientist Mark Matney.

NASA cautioned there was now a slim chance any surviving debris would land in the United States. Earlier this week, the space agency said North America would be in the clear.

Kinda makes me think of Dead Like Me only with a satellite.

Totally irrational but I'm going to root for it to come down right on sanity.....not counting on it,just hoping[:)]

The odds of any building, or one person out of the seven billion people on the planet being struck by one of these 26 pieces, are about one in 3,200. But the odds of your house, car or you being hit by a piece of the UARS satellite are drastically less – one in 21 trillion.

Save your toxic spew for the politics section, mike.

It better not fall on my property.

Do you realize, with certain snarky MFs around here, what you may just wrought !

1:21,000,000,000,000, hmm, that's about the same odds as <insert undesirable person> actually <insert desirable action or happenstance> in <insert flippantly chosen time frame>.

You gotta be more careful here. There will probably be something about that in the next revision of the TOS.

h,mm think of all the precious metals that might be there, if a chunk fell on my property, I 'd drag it under cover and say nothing.

As to it being the property of the US government, well if they cared that much about it, why didn't they go up there and get it, instead of allowing it to risk the life and limb of others not concerned.

But the odds that sanity quoted, they are lower odds than someone winning our national lottery, yet people win that nearly every week.

Or else what ? There has to be an or else something.

Speaking of PMs- will the last one out turn off the lights?

They hiked margins - so there was a huge drop this week.

What are we gonna do ?

I will drag that shit undercover. Into the shed, yeah. I got a buddy witgh a scrap card..... HAHAHAHA happy days are here again, the skies..........

ETA : "Location not predicted at this time. "

Hang on here, that has to be bullshit. I don't mean you I mean them. If they can nail it down to the hour they certainly know approximately where it will come down. There is no fucking way they could know one and not the other. I bet they just ain't telling because instead everyone in the world would go there, and they would rather be there first.

Fuck, tell within the hour but no clue as to the longitude or latitude ? Not fucking likely.

NASA just tweeted this: It's possible that #UARS is down by now. (Everybody OK out there?) We're waiting for confirmation from US Strategic Command.
