The citizens of Cobb County, Georgia, are currently mulling a proposal that would increase property taxes for 10 years in order to fund a new light-rail line between Atlanta to its suburbs. It's a fairly straightforward proposal, the kind of thing that pops up all the time in communities across the country. But if there's been one lesson of the past few years, it's that mundane policy debates have a tendency to become a lot less mundane once tea partiers get involved.

In this case, the Georgia Tea Party is arguing that the county should abandon its light-rail proposal because if the light-rail line were to be completed, it would become a magnet for terrorist attacks. Here's the group's chair, J.D. Van Brink:

If anyone doesn't believe me – look at England and Spain. Now, if we have a more decentralized mass-transit system using buses, if the terrorists blow up a single bus, we can work around that. When they blow up a rail, that just brings the system to a grinding halt. So how much security are we going to have on this rail system, and how much will it cost?


In other words, Van Brink is arguing that because terrorists fantasize about blowing up American infrastructure, we should avoid spending any money on infrastructure.


And, besides, if the members of the Georgia Tea Party, along with the other taxpayers in Cobb County, have to pay additional taxes to fund a new light-rail line - there’s a possibility that someone not from Cobb County, like from another part of Georgia or even someone from Florida or Alabama. might actually want to ride on it.

Why encourage dead-beat freeloaders?

Status: offline 		In a way-  it makes sense- but for another reason.  Look at all the 99 year leases of roads and infatructure.  Why should I pay tax to build more when it will likely be sold off to a private corporation?

the TP or colostomy baggers as some very wise and good looking poster once described them... Have determined that they can't win against the logic of improving the infrastructure. But because their braintrust has been watching the show "Scare Tactics" they feel a "T.F.P." could be easily adapted to what already exists in their party's framework.

Status: offline 		I dont see a problem. Why should we build something the terrorist could attack? Why should our tax payer money be used on anything that could be destroyed. We are better off hiding in the woods or in deep bunkers so the terrorist cant find us. Those have a better chance of not being destroyed. This why we the tea party oppose building sewers, roads, traffic lights, stadiums, and house. They all could be attacked by terrorist.

And the terrorists have already won the so-called war on terror.  The goal of the terrorist is never to murder a bunch of people; the murdering is just a side-effect of their goal to make those who continue living scared of everything-including their own shadows.
