I try to read the entire thread before I respond. However, if there are pages of back biting, name calling, and angry rhetoric, I admit I skip those.

All too often the real argument gets lost in all the immature "I have to be right" posturing reflected in some posts. I'm not interested in reading those, nor in participating in them. Once I see a thread has descended to that level, I may try once or twice to bring it back on topic, after that, I'm done.

Pretty much this, although if a thread has descended that far, then I abandon it entirely.

I don't want to jump in on a 6 page thread with a serious answer to the OP, only to find after posting it that pages 2-6 have are no longer even about the OP.  It's just out of place at that point.  So I read through, skipping the crap that doesn't appeal to me.

I will if the subject is one which I have an interest or opinion on, although I only tend to post if there's the potential for pages of backbiting, name calling and angry rhetoric.  Generally the threads in which the usual suspects are agreeing with each other are usually the same threads in which they're pissing on a newbie from a great height and engaging in a round of fatuous self-congratulation for being so experienced and wise in the ways of BDSM.

Frankly, if you remove the constant flirting and miscellaneous public ego-stroking, the threads would get a lot smaller and have a much higher signal to noise ratio.  Conflict is inevitably good because multiple people expound upon their point of view which means that the reader has the opportunity to consider an issue from those various points of view and make up their own minds.  Unfortunately this tends to be diluted by people jumping in to defend each other or expound upon the character of some poster they don't like.  As always, social games are at the forefront of the minds of most.

What I won't do is simply agree with someone.  That adds nothing to the discussion and I really do wonder at the psychology of people whose only contribution to a thread is to publicly proclaim how right somebody else is without expressing any opinion or insight of their own.

I usually check the last page to see if it's still on topic or not.

Yeah that made me laugh....

I have done that a few times, I guess it's just a way of giving an opinon and saving a few key strokes, for those of use that don't us more than 4 fingers when we type

edite to correct spelling and add "for those of us that don't spell well"

Thanks, ricken. No doubt Awareness will show that he was amused by my little jokeypoos too - once he's consulted a few leading surgeons to confirm that smiling won't crack any essential bones in his face. [;)]
