Hillwilliam -> Something to think about (9/15/2011 10:56:06 AM)

Random thoughts initiated by the events of the last dozen or so years.

Should a person who works to the detriment of his (or her) country for personal political gain be convicted of treason?

No,they should be spurned at the ballot box.The charge of treason, rightly so,needs to be reserved for the most heinous of offences simple and all too oft occurring instances of public officials putting their desires in front of the countries does not meet the criteria of treason.

It's too broad a question. What constitutes detriment? You could find plenty of people willing to sayt that the Republicans all work for the detriment of the country for personal gain and just as many convinced that, no, it's the Democrats who do so.

Detriment would be to actively stall or prevent things that would be good for the country and work for things that would be bad for the country in order to make an opposing party look to be at fault and take advantage at the next election cycle.

I deliberately made this a nonpartisan question for just the reason you stated in your last sentence.

Whose to say what the motivation is for any such act? Tossing around the charge of "treason" willy nilly is not going to help. Please see Perry' recent statements .
Treason is Benedict Arnold....not Sarah Palin...or John Boehner.

Unh... and that would be in whose opinion, precisely?

Again, that's why I tossed out an open-ended question. The discussion can go multiple ways.

slvemike4u -> RE: Something to think about (9/15/2011 11:27:49 AM)

There you go.....treason is a charge that can only be levied based upon an ACTION performed by the offender....not charged based on a mindset.Hence the charge being the "act of treason".

I think we'd end up with a new form of gridlock, that being when all the lawmakers are in court rather than in their respective houses voting.

I say that because the instant that idea became law, the charges would fly so fast and thick the air above Washington would grow dark.

I still don't see any way around people's partisan mindsets. Some people think a single payer national health care program would be good for the country, other's think it would be a disaster... so when Congressman A votes against it, is he acting for the good of the country or to it's detriment? It is all a matter of perspective. For that reason I think that a word like treason should be restricted to someone who engages in violence for the purpose of overthrowing the government, knowingly and willingly gives aid to an enemy in time of war or engages in espionage against the country.

And that's happened when?

Ask the British Labour party.

Moonhead -> RE: Something to think about (9/15/2011 3:03:07 PM)

If they'd been spurned, the Tories would have a clear majority, rather than a coalition with the ball-less party, though.

Miliband is working hard on the problem.

So who will they represent after the unions leave the fold?

Agreed, they're just smalltime grifters who (well one anyway) got put in the position to totally halt movement of the government for good or bad. The other just shows up in a bus and threatens her own party with running when she needs money.
