Judge upholds ruling for Murfreesboro mosque
quote:

A Rutherford County judge decided to uphold his earlier decision that the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro has a right, by law, to build a bigger place of worship.

“Those who are adherents to Islam are entitled to pursue their worship in the United States just as are those who are adherents to more universally established faiths (in our community),” ruled Chancellor Robert Corlew III...

“We have a duty equally to treat those whose religious beliefs are similar to the majority beliefs and to those whose beliefs are very different from the majority,” Corlew wrote. “If the zoning laws are too favorable to those seeking to build places of worship, then citizens should prevail upon their elected representatives to change those ordinances, but until they do the Court must apply those laws equally to Protestant Christians, Roman Catholics, Muslims, Buddhists and others.”...

Corlew’s latest ruling reiterated that Islam is a religion. Brandon disagreed with that.

“Chancellor Corlew seems to go on and on that it’s been decided that Islam is a religion, and we take issue with that,” Brandon Jr., who is representing the plaintiffs, said. “There’s no proof in this case that Islam is a religion. There is no case law or code that Islam is a religion.”

So, Mr. Brandon, if Islam isn't a religion, what is it exactly?

It's remarkable that in 2011, courts even have to waste time entertaining arguments like this. I understand that every American deserves his or her day in court, but some arguments are just fallacious and deserve to be summarily tossed out. The assertion that Islam isn't really a religion and thus doesn't deserve the protection of the First Amendment is one of them.

What's next, Mr. Brandon? No Mormon temples - because Mormonism is not a religion in the eyes of many Protestants? No Roman Catholic churches - bcause according to some evangelical fundamentalists (including James Hagee, prominant supporter of John McCain in the last Presidential election and Rick Perry in this one) Roman Catholism is a Satanic cult and not a religion?

Appaluse and kudos for this judge in Tennessee.

It's a cult and a crime organization.
What would people say if the neo-nazis wanted to establish a church?
*Anyone* can establish a "church." Many people do it to get the tax-exempt status.
"Hey Judge, I'm Popeye and I want to establish a church so I get tax -exempt status and we're all about offering up sex acts to Jesus with beautiful women."
"See the clerk for your paperwork."

By your reckoning that would make any religion a cult and a crime organisation
well done dumbarse
you couldnt get a following if you leashed people together thru their noses leading to a butt plug in your arse.

Pops, that's just.....well there really are no words for it other than ignorant bigotry.

Christians have probably killed more people in the name of religion than any other group...if any religion is a crime organization Christianity is.

General reply:

(mini) Rant Warning [sm=banghead.gif]

Islam has killed millions of people!

No, wait... it's Christianity that has killed millions of people!

But we can't forget the Athiests, they've killed millions of people too!

For Christ (irony noted) sakes people! The problem isn't Islam or Christianity or Atheism... the problem is ideology, that notion that your belief (be it religious or otherwise) is the true belief.

I have always had my doubts about Scientology - but since the IRS and the state and Federal courts have determined it's a religion - I accept their right to construct a meeting place or rent a meeting hall.

Same with Protestants, Catholics, Mormons, Jews, Buddhists, Wiccans - and Muslims. All are considered religions, and all should be treated the same under the civil law.

Our founder fucked up on the freedom of religion statement...

They should have said freedom of faith. Any church, if not at first, will become a corrupt organization power mad and controlling at some point. I don't give a fuck if it is christian, muslim or atheism, if they organize into a church man will corrupt the faith and bend it to his own goals. Church, Mosques, Temples etc, ought to have to have a permit and promise to never bad mouth one another.

Just tax them like any other company, it would generate a lot more than permits and wouldnt force taxpayers to subsidize their very much "for profit" enterprises.

I like that Idea

They seem to be exploring every other option to save taxpayer money. Getting rid of of the tax exempt status's for religions is a better idea than getting rid of the National weather service.

ClassIsInSession -> RE: Religious Freedom: Tenn. Court Affirms That Isn't Just For Christians Any More (9/1/2011 1:48:47 PM)

The problem that causes all of the scorn between religions, isn't a problem with religion at all, it's a problem with self-esteem. If you don't feel solid enough inside you look to "God" to fill you. I have no problem with that no matter which religion you choose, and I happen to be a christian, albeit a perhaps very unorthodox one.  But when you have to make everyone else wrong, the whole "my God is bigger than your God" thing...it just shows the glaring whole in your self esteem and perhaps in your faith as well.

Let's face the facts, and when I say this I speak to Christians, Muslims, or any other religious group, if "God" is omnipotent and omnipresent, and he/she/it takes issue with a person's religious choice, he/she/it could very easily cause that person to disappear from life. I think killing in the name of God only proves you don't  have the confidence that God is all powerful.

At the heart of Christianity are a few very simple and profound things. First, Love you neighbor as yourself. There is no use of any adjective before neighbor in that statement, so it means broadly, love all of your neighbors, whether gay, straight, bi, white, black, yellow or red, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Athiest, rich or poor....LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF!
Secondly, the Bible emphatically states we have free will to choose:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19)
“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15)
“Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.” (Proverbs 3:31)
“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17) (If we had no choice, then knowing to do good would necessarily result in doing good.)
=====================================================================================================================
So respecting everyone's free will to choose is something that should go without question.

Finally, I can honestly say that I have friends of most every religion, race, sexual preference and economic level. I have a cousin who is from Iran, and several friends from Egypt, Pakistan and other parts of the Middle East. They are neither criminals nor cultists. They are people, with the same hopes, fears and dreams as anyone else.

The Court decision that was made was just and right.
