SAMHAIN09 -> Can people change over night? (8/30/2011 8:59:15 PM)

I personally think that depending on what happened in said night and how long the night was that they can.

Arpig -> RE: Can people change over night? (8/30/2011 9:01:33 PM)

Yes they can, and it doesn't even have to be an eventful or prolonged night.

TheHeretic -> RE: Can people change over night? (8/30/2011 9:02:18 PM)

It's easy to change overnight.  What is hard is not changing back the following afternoon.

littlewonder -> RE: Can people change over night? (8/30/2011 9:08:12 PM)

my experience has been that people rarely change who they are at the core.

Arpig -> RE: Can people change over night? (8/30/2011 9:11:37 PM)

Really? Let me skip my meds for a few days and see how sudden and complete the change can be. [:D]

I want to watch. I think that this could be rather interesting.

Although I think that she was refering to those, 'I am a reformed man" or what not, that you hear people spout after an argument, but which they do not mean.

Essentially, they are not even 'fessing up with both feet, much less admitting that something needs to be made better, much LESS doing something to actually try to MAKE it better. All they're doing is SAYING that they takes responsibility and are going to change;

And there you have it, ladies and gents--Taking Responsibility Lite! Tastes great, less filling! All of the lip service, and none of the work! ACTUALLY taking responsibility? Forget THAT messy alternative!"

But hey, who knows--maybe they've been communing with the spirit of Webster, and have gotten sanctioned changes that us mere mortals know nothing about with regards to the term "reformed.'

If there's something about someone that isn't working for you, let 'em go. There are many glorious ways to get your needs (and wants) met without struggling.

But then you arent really "changing" as much as "reverting"

No Willbe, because it's different every time.

Termyn8or -> RE: Can people change over night? (8/31/2011 12:53:47 AM)

Jumped through.

I can change from gracious host to homicidal maniac in about 46 milliseconds. And I am more stable than most people, really.

T^T

I think that a lot about a person can change rather quickly but as someone else said, the core of who they are........very very unlikely.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Can people change over night? (8/31/2011 7:32:14 AM)

Change clothes? Change their mind? Change who they are at heart? Yes, yes, and no.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Can people change over night? (8/31/2011 8:17:55 AM)

I think that one can have a revelation that starts a change overnight, but real change takes time. And yeah, what Heretic said!!

In a word, yes.

Someone tried to kill me one night and my world (and me in it) was never the same afterward.

But the answer to the question come down to the specifics of the situation and the people involved.... and context.

I agree. If my whole night was spent doing something uninspiring, yet mandatory,
I will certainly not be my usual bubbly self the next day.

Of course, if my whole night was spent doing..............
Well, you get the picture. [8D]

Firm has a theory, and it has pretty much resonated with my own experiences; people pretty much develop into who they will be (at the core) by the age of 25.  Significant change only happens after that if they experience some serious event that causes an upheaval in the status quo of their life.

That being said, I'm of the opinion that, yes... that change could happen over night if the event and ramifications of that event occurred within one night and were serious enough.

I disagree; I think the core personality is formed, by and large, between the ages of two and five. And it's my opinion that significant changes to the core personaity structure occur in adulthood only as the result of a breakthrough event, usually involving an epiphany of some sort, and the subsequent integration of the trauma that triggered the breakthrough event.

I've just been diagnosed with adult ADD and PTSD, and while it's wonderful to now have a theoretical framework from which to work, it's another thing entirely to begin to understand one's life in the context of that framework, and to change and adapt one's behavior based on that awareness.

PeonForHer -> RE: Can people change over night? (9/1/2011 2:24:22 PM)

FR

. . . And then there's the question, 'If you changed, would you even know that you'd changed?'

Something very good, or very nasty, can happen to a person, and that person is changed, without he or she realising.  No need to give examples.
