If Social Security is such a great deal why is it that the politicians in Washington DC do not pay into it or receive it?

mnottertail -> RE: Social Security (8/18/2011 3:56:01 PM)

They have voted themselves a better system at americans expense, same reason they dont pay into healthcare.

They do. [/thread]

flcouple2009 -> RE: Social Security (8/18/2011 5:26:57 PM)

They closed the Civil Service Retirement System in 1983.  Any new Federal Employees (INCLUDING MEMBERS OF CONGRESS) have paid into Social Security since 1984.

They also participate in the Federal Employees Retirement System as well.

pahunkboy -> RE: Social Security (8/18/2011 5:49:42 PM)

This was asked on my reps page- and he said they do pay into it.

Because they know there's nothing "secure" about it.

EVERY Congressman elected for the first time post 1984 participates in Social Security. Pre-1984 electeds had an option, but I dont know of any who dont.

Learn to read. The OP is wrong, they do participate in SS.

Termyn8or -> RE: Social Security (8/18/2011 9:18:12 PM)

Yeah sure. I'd like to get SS and FERS at the same time too, how do the rest of us get into FERS ? And don't try to say they can't get both.

What's more is there still a cap on the SS payments ? Used to be after about fifty grand you didn't pay more. Is that still true ? I wouldn't know because I no longer participate in this bullshit.

They want to privatise SS, or did until it became political suicide, and now there is a hubub about military pensions. Will they privatize FERS ? And can they lose it like the people losing their PERS here in Ohio ? (I can scan documents if you like)

Anyone who tries to tell me that they are not out for number one is full of shit. And you know the best part of it ? Most of them don't even need their salaries, let alone the retirement. What's more, they shouldn't have any government provided security whatsoever. That's MY fucking opinion.

Get a job. Tons of employers have retirement plans that supplement Social Security. Which of course has nothing to do with the OP being wrong.

Yes there is a cap on SS contributions AND SS benefits, and the benefit formula is front loaded to lower salaries...ie redistribution of SS taxes to the lower incomes. Youre way out of date though, its about 100k now.

Termyn8or -> RE: Social Security (8/18/2011 9:36:07 PM)

"and the benefit formula is front loaded to lower salaries"

Sure, and at 15.2% so is the pay in.

That's OK though. It really is. That means that they pay in $8.1 million altogether. Their fucking bribe,,,, oops lobby money comes to more than that. What an altruistic gesture for them to make for their constituents. Yeah, they are the greatest.

Obfuscation (besides the number being incorrect). The point is that of the money PAID IN, yanno, the money that actually PAYS THE BENEFITS, lower incomes get a greater return on their contribution than higher incomes. Money not paid in and not paid out is irrelevant.

Termyn8or -> RE: Social Security (8/18/2011 9:50:30 PM)

Not if it is considered in relation to disposable income. Remember disposable income ? That's what used to fuel the economy without putting people in a shitload of debt.

Good thing they got rid of it huh. A hundred grand a year means shit now, not long ago you could live completely debt free on that, but no more, unless you are a hermit or something.

Does what an insurance company charges for an annuity depend on disposable income? Who gives a fuck what it is in relation to disposable income. Social Security was designed to pay in and pay out, and over time has been "gerrymandered" to use your favorite term, in favor of the lower paid.

If you want to argue for even more redistribution of income by uncapping the contributions and keeping the same benefit formula, then dont hide behind a lot of words, come out and say it. And then sign the post "Termy, Socialist".

tazzygirl -> RE: Social Security (8/18/2011 10:38:11 PM)

The SS base is $106,800.  The maximum employee share in 2011 is reduced to $4,485.60, but the maximum employer share remains at $6,621.60.

Funny, but in the real world you dont make points by totally misstating facts, other than the point that he doesnt know what the fuck hes talking about. Social Security is very strong, requiring only minor changes that have already been proposed. That the fuckwads on the left side of the aisle want to play scare grandma instead of being responsble is the only thing insecure about SS.

mnottertail -> RE: Social Security (8/19/2011 9:47:02 AM)

Yes, we know about your nonfactual stances on social security, you were once telling us that it is a loxbox program, and several other things I had to correct you on. But raping it like the fuckwads on the right want wont solve the problem.

As usual, when wilbur says something it will be easily ascertained that the opposite is more the truth.

Please take time to read this and the response directly underneath it:

(of course wilbur will whine that he is misunderstood) probably from his ptsd as a vietnam medic. because when caught, he is constantly misunderstood, it aint that he dont know shit about what he talks about, oh not wilbur the insurance peddler.
