Now that my son is grown and moved out, I'm thinking of moving to a new place. But not just a new local place, I'm thinking of really moving somewhere new.

Sooooo.....my question is what places (within the US) do people think would be a great place to live? I'm not a city person, but I also don't want to travel half an hour just for bread and milk because the nearest store is too far away.

Tell me about the place and why you think it is a great place for someone to live.

Thanks!

I'm a weird one, so where I'd move (not accounting for things like taxes and whatnot), probably would not mesh with others.

I hate the cold, I hate hot weather. I love clouds, I like rain, and storms. HEHE... Weird right, most will say sunshine, and all that nonsense.

So, for me, I've determined that somewhere along the coast in Washington, and some distance south, would fulfill, my not to cold winters, not to hot summers, not to sun shiny all the time. Plus Around that area there are huge Forests.

I've eliminated moving south, because of alligators, rattlesnakes, and it's just to damn hot. North, Is to damn cold.

So, for me, that is a good location, if making a determination on climate. There are cities and rural areas in every state, so climate is a large determining factor. I can't emphasize enough how much I hate hot summers and freezing cold winters. The area I found when looking all this up for "dreams" knocks off about 10 degrees from the high and ten from the low, and it's not an overcrowded area either, so that is good for me.

In Illinois, we get the worst of winter and summer, to damn hot or two damn could and about 3 1/2 months of good weather during the transitions.

snohomish county washington.

well but not densely populated, close to seattle, reasonably close to the canadian border <skiing in whistler!!>, gorgeous fucking mountain and coastal scenery, loads of wilderness, quaint towns, good transportation via land, sea and air.

what's not to like?

e2a: woohoo, washington 2, everyplace else 0.

I just moved a month ago to Baltimore for the same reason...daughter went off to college and  I wanted to kickstart my life again and be closer to Master.

I have to say it's not bad. It's a city but not really. It's more like a large town imo. Yeah people say the crime is bad here but ya know it's bad everywhere and you simply don't live in the bad neighborhoods.

I don't drive and I am renting an apartment where I can catch a bus right outside around the corner or I can walk a block to catch another one or a few blocks to catch a different one. No matter what direction I go I'm not far from a bus that goes at all hours of the day or night....something I didn't have where I lived before. My grocery store is about 8 blocks away, a 15 min walk, there's a 24 hour convenience store a 5 minute walk away and I can see the harbor from my window. I have to say this is one of the most convenient places I have ever lived.

There are stores here everywhere and everyone including the grocery stores even deliver to your door. I don't even have to leave the house if I didn't want to lol. Oh and the train to DC is easy to jump on if I want to go for the day or if I get a job there. There's the amtrak and greyhound that are easy to get to and a light rail to other cities nearby.

If you're a partier or like to get a drink there are bars everywhere. There is great food to dine on everywhere and live bands that play all around the area.  Some of the top colleges in America are located here including Johns Hopkins and MICA. There are also a lot of well known employers here along with government jobs.

The only bad thing I've come across here so far is the weather.....the humidity is higher than I'm used to so it's going to take me awhile to aclimate myself. Until then my allergies are killing me!

In the deep South, we have lovely scenery and low taxes .. but the humidity will wear you down.

Its hard to say cuz I have gotten wanderlust now..

well, I have not been there yet but US Virgin Islands (no passport needed).. it has my curiousity..

That doesnt sound like it would do for you tho...

I am in WA state right now, north of Seattle and there are some small but big enough cities up here. I dont know how it compares to NJ or what you are really looking for. Here its very similar to the west coast of BC which is very beautiful and not extreme in tempreature most of the time, it does get a winter, maybe a couple of weeks of snow... but whats Christmas without a little snow? Its not a police state like California, but then CA is almost like a country un-to-itself. Its fairly laid back here. I have no idea tho about any bdsm clubs, munches or that stuff. There are u-picks if you are into picking your own berries.. they have old fashioned country fairs.. its green here pretty much all year round, everything is lush, clean smelling air.. parks, the ocean, lakes, skiing, boating,..

There are all sorts of list and surveys of the best places to live.. some of those lists have fairly detailed info on hundreds of cities.. and they tell you how they came up with their ratings, the pros, cons (as they see it).. you should take a look thru some of those lists, and figure out what your must haves are so you can use that to narrow down the places.. and too, if you need to find a new job there or can transfer with your employer or if you are retired.. are you going to buy or rent.. a lot of factors to consider..

Colorado has everything.  Denver is a major city, and an hour away are outdoor activities that beat everyone.

Boulder is a hippie granola town.  The mountain towns are small town, quiet Americana.  Colorado Springs is for the born-again Bible thumpers.  Northeast Colorado is farm community, and southern Colorado is Hispanic small towns.  A full four seasons, sometimes in a single three day block, and the lack of humidity means it's livable.

Well if you are looking for a place where you will also retire in, you may want to check out state's that are good for that.

Personally, while i was only there when i was 8, i would put a vote in for Denver.  It seems to have everything though i am sure the winters can be hell, but its one of the few states that works to make fitness easy for its residents, its got everything from cities to no man's land country from what i can gather.  If i ever move again like you speak of, i think Colorado will be the State i look too.  From what i understand there is a good scene out there if you are interested in that kind of stuff.

Good luck, packing up a life and moving to a new one is an emotional grand thing.

It depends-   are you going to buy or rent?

You can never know too much about a neighborhood.

A small town- works for me.   I am still close to the stores... we do not have big city problems.

Asheville NC is an awfully good place. Lots of stuff to do and right in the mountains. Medium/large town. Has its own airport. Decent kink scene and the climate is really good as well. If I could afford to, Id move 60 miles across the mountain to there.

That's exactly what I was going to say: Asheville, NC. Actually, any part of western NC in the mountains (Boone, Blowing Rock, etc.) is gorgeous. It's like you're way out in the country but Asheville is a very artsy city with lots to do and lots of "culture." Boone has Appalachian State and is a cool college town way up in the mountains. WV is my home but, when we lived in western NC, it very quickly became my second home. I adore it there :)

you guys have me wanting to visit asheville.
and denver; one day i'll get over there.

i'll throw omaha into the ring -- omaha is really a nice town. okay, it's got problems like everywhere -- some neighborhoods really suck and have high localized crime rates, and there are a lot of reeeeally snooty people on the west side of town who dont' think the law applies to them. =p but in the middle of town you find a really nice mix of all sorts of people.

i'm from a small town, and i like omaha because it seems like a small town, even though it's large and has lots to offer -- there are LOADS of trees, tons of parks, trails, a fantastic zoo, movie theatres everywhere, several great malls (and one that's slowly dying haha), lots of unique little local shops, particularly down in the Old Market, as well as the familiar chains. there is a great professional dance company, several professional theatre groups, a variety of art galleries ranging from small and independent to nationally renowned, like the Joslyn. (the art scene is really active here; it's pretty cool.) the Century Link Center (formerly Qwest Center) brings in all sorts of great national acts, and if you like baseball, the College World Series is here every year.  Also, right across the river there are all sorts of casinos if you're a gambling fan, and the casinos also bring in lots of great entertainment.

driving can be really annoying here because people are hilariously competitive -- they get very predictable. public transportation exists but could be better. still, it's not terrible once you figure out how it all works. this area also features the typical midwestern weather extremes -- HOT summer, COLD winter, fantabulous thunderstorms sprinkled throughout, with a generally pleasant spring and fall. we also have something called "thundersnows" which i'd never experienced before living here. haha
thunder, lightning, and snow! wowzers! another thing i'd never experienced before, though, are sundogs -- they are beautiful, and are one of the things i really appreciate in the bleakness of winter. =p

NE's kink scene is small but growing; the groups exist mostly out of Omaha and Lincoln, here on the east side of the state, and there are some scattered Western NE kinky people, but they mostly migrate to this side for events and socializing. the events are mostly play parties and demos, though; not a lot of seminars and other things like that, but we've been trying to get some new things like that happening around here. One group had an event with national presenters over the weekend; i went to the event last year, and it was pretty fun. people from KC and cities in Iowa come in for that event.

Ah, you should. I don't think you'd regret it. Most people visit Asheville for the Biltmore Estate which is indeed amazing. But the mountains and the vibe there are way more amazing

Portland, Oregon. The politics in Oregon are a little strange, but there are beautiful neighborhoods, great scenery and lots to do. The climate is pretty mild, but if you like winter sports there are places close by. The rain gets a little dreary.
