White teens beat, drive over and kill Black man

quote:

On a recent Sunday morning just before dawn, two carloads of white teenagers drove to Jackson, Mississippi, on what the county district attorney says was a mission of hate: to find and hurt a black person.

In a parking lot on the western side of town they found their victim.

James Craig Anderson, a 49-year-old auto plant worker, was standing in a parking lot, near his car. The teens allegedly beat Anderson repeatedly, yelled racial epithets, including "White Power!" according to witnesses.

Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith says a group of the teens then climbed into their large Ford F250 green pickup truck, floored the gas, and drove the truck right over Anderson, killing him instantly.

Mississippi officials say it was a racially motivated murder. What the gang of teens did not know was that a surveillance camera was focused on the parking lot that night, and many of the events, including the actual murder of Anderson, were captured live on videotape...

The group of teens that night was led by 18-year-old Deryl Dedmon, Jr., of Brandon, Mississippi, according to police and officials...

Dedmon led and instigated the attack from early in the evening, he took part in the beating of Anderson, and Dedmon was also the actual driver of the Ford 250 truck that would serve as the murder weapon, according to officials...

THE OTHER TEENS IN THE GROUP HAVE NOT BEEN CHARGED.

The group of white teens randomly picked a Black man walking home from his job, the group of white teens beat him repeatedly, and then the group of white teens climbing into the pick-up truck and the driver ran the man over and completed the job of killing him, and

THE OTHER TEENS IN THE GROUP HAVE NOT BEEN CHARGED WITH ANY CRIME.

Further, the driver is facing the death penalty. If you believe that the State of Mississippi will execute a White teenager for killing a Black man - I have a bridge I'd like to sell you (it connects Manhattan and Brooklyn)

Mississippi Burning

quote:

The lynching of the three men occurred shortly after midnight on June 21, 1964, when they went to investigate the burning of a church that supported civil rights activity. James Chaney was a local Freedom Movement activist in Meridian, Michael Schwerner was a CORE organizer from New York, and Andrew Goodman, also from New York, was a Freedom Summer volunteer.

Mississippi officials refused to prosecute the 18 killers for murder.

FYI: Michael Schwerner was a friend of my older brother. They met through Boy Scouting. So I can't be objective...

"Southern Justice" by Norman Rockwell - his depiction of the last moments of Chaney, Schwerner and Goodman outside Philadelphia, Mississippi June 21, 1964.

I have a framed copy on my office wall with the inscription "Lest We Forget".

I grew up in Meridian, MS.  I also watched Mississippi Burning in disgust night before last.  I hope that the conviction is a big one.  The thing that got to me watching the movie was how the people were screaming about how the federal government had no right to mess with their lives and convinced they were that they were right.  They truly believed that the black and white residents were happier with things the way that they were.

Now I think MOST rational people have come to see that racism is and was a bad and evil thing.  I think that there are probably racist and bigots in every political party.  I couldn't help but parallel the peoples indignant self-righteous thinking in how their thoughts were so right and the governments was so wrong with some people's thoughts and feelings against the government today. In the end they were proven wrong and I think there is that possibility in today's environment.  Now that parallel is NOT about racism them and now but about self-righteous thinking then and now.

Hold the fuck on here. You all make it sound like it wouldn't be so bad if these punks killed a White, or if Blacks killed this guy. Is that all you can fucking see ? Don't you see it for what it is, without that filter ?

Hey, I am the first MF to kill someone who deserves it, but this was ridiculous. What we need face paint to go throught certain hoods ? This is bullshit. The race of the perps and the victim overshadows the fucking crime ? It goddam well sounds that way. A crime is a fucking crime, what other bullshit spin do you have to put on it ? Tell me so I can see you coming.

Fuck it.

It could be that the camera does not show the facial features of the other teens or something to do with their age. Or whether there is other evidence linking them to the scene.

We just had a case that was tried in the media but the prosecutors could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt. They may very well be going with the best they can.

Is what happened morally better or worse than what happened in Wisconsin this weekend?

It was not so long ago (before hate crime legislation) that the charge would have been reckless driving and not first degree murder.

Morally - similar - but no one was murdered in the Wisconsin riots. You might say that comparing the Wisconsin riots and the Mississippi murder to be a textbook example of the "false equivilency" fallacy. "A false equivalence fallacy occurs when someone falsely equates an act by one party as being equally egregious to that of another without taking into account the underlying differences which may make the comparison patently invalid."

I suspect the majority of those 31 people arrested in Wisconsin will see jail time, but none face the death penalty for committing murder, because no murders were committed. State Fair melees produce 11 injuries, 31 arrests

As I said in my OP:

quote:

I also suspect that the members of the murderer's gang in Mississippi will never see an hour of jail time in the death of Mr. Anderson, based on the history of the legal system of the State of Mississippi, and that the murderer himself will probably get a jail sentence of between 10 and 15 years, based on the history of the legal system of the State of Mississippi. The murderer is White, the dead man is Black, the murder was committed in Mississippi - this murderer will be walking the streets free (probably) by 2025 or sooner.

To my knowledge (and based on my Internet research), no white man in the entire United States was ever executed for killing a Black man between the years 1913 and 1997. Since 1997, 11 White men have executed for killing a Black man - not one of those executions having taken place in the State of Mississippi. There is also, at this time, no White man on death row awaiting execution in the State of Mississippi for the crime of murdering a non-White man or a non-White Woman.

No, more likely vehicular manslaughter...maybe 39 months of low security shuffle board. There will be a plea, he's seems to be taking the rap and will get life w/o parole. No, he'll be out in less 12 years.

I was in Missisippi last fall for a Navy ship's reunion for my first time.
The women had beer bellies and there was a lot of cars with that blue tarp stuff taped to their windows.
