So while re-reading The Fountainhead, this passage stuck out to me:

"When the fact that one is a total nonentity who's done nothing more outstanding than eating, sleeping and chatting with neighbors becomes a fact worthy of pride, of announcement to the world and of diligent study by millions of readers - the fact that one has built a cathedral becomes unrecordable and unannounceable."

The first thing that went through my head when I read this was twitter. Does anyone else agree/disagree? What are your thoughts?

The celebration of nonetities was going on long before Twitter, I'm afraid. Just look at the Rand cult's esteem for Frank O'Connor, who spent fifty years doing pretty much fuck all besides being Mister Ayn Rand.

To be honest, my first thought was not Twitter but Paris Hilton, but then she does a lot of other things that might not be noteworthy but are damned stupid...

On 2nd thoughts, it could be a commentary on Big Brother and other reality shows, I seriously don't get the fascination with watching others just being in a house, eating, sleeping and talking to each other, why would anybody want to know?

So true. Have you noticed we're only about 2 steps away from "Ow, My Balls!" from "Idiocracy"? I can see that show being the next step after "Jackass" and "Survivor".

I know Rand is one of the biggest hypocrites who ever lived. She spoke volumes against social programs like Medicare but then didn't see a problem with taking from the government when she got sick and benefited from Medicare. No wonder Rand has become a goddess to the Republican party.

She was an immigrant as well, come to that. You would have thought that might have cooled a lot of the hard right (she's big with libertarians and armed camps as well as the Republicans' neocon wing) on bigging her up somewhat...

Yes, nothing says neocon like the most outspoken pro choice atheist you can find.

The tea party people also like to advocate her, but they too have no idea what she's about.

In her essays she tears down the belief that America was in any way a christian nation. She derides religion as irrational mysticism. In particular she targets the Catholic church because of their opposition to abortion and birth control.

True, she took Medicaid whenn she was dying. Her argument, which is tenuous, is that she has had to pay into it all her life, and when a robber offers you some of your money back, is it moral to take it?

And that argument was a bullshit attempt to weasel her way out of one of the moral absolutes she'd spent her whole career as writer blathering about. Dying or not, it's still hypocrisy.

That the tea party have no interest in anything else she had to say besides her opposition to taxation? I thought that was a given. They're good at picking and choosing specific bits out of the bible and ignoring the rest of that, as well.
(The religious arguments are more The Fountainhead than Atlas Shrugged though, aren't they? The latter's the big Rand text for the teabaggers...)
