Jiffy Lube Scam

This appears that it may be an older video (no indication to date) but it is still a very startling expose` on Jiffy Lube. Makes me glad I never go to the national places like that.

Termyn8or -> RE: Jiffy Lube Scam (8/4/2011 5:24:18 PM)

This already bullshit and I am only 00:02:33 into it.

First of all the fuel filter is not mounted at the top of the tank, EVER. that includes the top plate for the pump and the float which detects the level in the tank for the gas guage. What's more, a tranny flush is not dome via the cooler lines, it requires that the pan be removed and all the gunk in the borrom be acraped out, this is materials from the clutches etc. and sometime chips left in there form the manufacturing process, which are used to scare customers into a larger scope repair by really unscrupulous shops.

This reminds me of a scambuster type thing with VCRs, remember them ? They had a VCR, an older Panasonic built model and they took the reel drive belt off. Now I was quite proficient at servicing these things and they railed about this guy who wanted to replace the forward clutch. Now if a VCR came to my bench with the reel drive belt off I would recommend replacing the clutch because the clutch must have been sticking, which forces the takeup reel to work against the capstan. This is the only way the belt would possibly come off, except for tampering, which is EXACTLY what they did. One guy in their video fixed it for free, without even taking the top off, and only took half of the fucking screws off the bottom, where the reel belt was located. It is so obvious that he got a phpone call and must've known someone who advertised with them. This was many years ago and I think it was Fox. I actually have a videotape of it somewhere and if pushed I might just find it. But their "engineer" who worked for the station was not as good as I at servicing these things, I am sure, either that or he lied to gain favor with his employer, which was the TV station.

But I am not sticking up for them. I know damn well that with all the DWIs/DUIs one of the classes they send you to does actually teach you how not to get caught.

So this is not so different.

You wanna know something else ? Shops in this area (not busted on tape), back in the freon 12 days would pump any R12 out of your car in the winter, even if they did do the service. They would then sell you back your own fucking freon when it got warm. Some noticed because some cars run the AC during defrost. With the air going through the heater core it acts as a dehumidifier and can clear your windshield even before the engine even starts to warm up.

Actually, I just use my own mechanic or do this shit myself, but not everybody can do that. I wish there was a comprehensive database that could alert people to scams, but really, this report was a bunch of shit. YOU CANNOT effectively flush an automatic transmission via the cooler lines, which is all they are. And no manufacturer in their right mind puts a fuel filter up top of the tank, it would be market suicide.

People do get fucked over every day, but these suits didn't uncover anything real. Shit, when you scam, don't make it a mass production goal. How stupid are these people ?

MasterG2kTR -> RE: Jiffy Lube Scam (8/4/2011 5:58:14 PM)

I agree with you about the fuel filter (don't know what the fuck that was) location being bogus, but the fuel pump and float IS on top the tank! As for the flushing of the transmission, yeah I know you need to drop the pan and change the filter, etc. to do it right. But that's why this is a SCAM and why they never use the T-Tech machine to do the job. They just give you that feel good feeling by telling you about it. You also conveniently ignored the unchanged oil filters. Oh that's right....you couldn't be bothered to take it all in.

Sometimes you need to get off your soapbox and think about the fools out there that will actually fall for these scams.

Termyn8or -> RE: Jiffy Lube Scam (8/4/2011 6:36:05 PM)

I think it better for people to have a basic understanding of how their junk works when it does.

And one little known fact is that changing the fluid in an automatic transmission is detrimental to it's lifespan. The best way is to get the gunk out, change the filter and put the old fluid back in, only replenishing what was lost in the process. I can explain this fully in detail, and I can do it without links.

And what about the soapbox in the video ? They fucking lied, which will hurt their crdibility and the other scams they run will still run. I think that when one debunks, or exposes a scam it should be all truth. It's less reproachable that way, but the story is less interesting. More importantly it doesn't increase the ratings as much.

WyldHrt -> RE: Jiffy Lube Scam (8/5/2011 12:19:40 AM)

Add 'Econo Lube N Tune' to JiffyLube for BS and scams. The manager took one good look at my tits (OK, more than one) and decided to tell me that my truck, which I took in for an oil change, had a blown head gasket. Umm... really? [8|]
He handed me an estimate for $1500 or some such nonsense, then slipped me a card for a 'local place' that could fix my (perfectly running) truck for a mere grand, and a link to some gov't program that would pay part of the 'repairs' if I couldn't afford them.

I politely told him to stuff it and bring my truck around.

Termyn8or -> RE: Jiffy Lube Scam (8/5/2011 1:07:36 AM)

FR I guess

I think other than when I bought a car I may have paid for one oil change in all my born days (I did it when I bought a car, and put MY oil in, MYSELF) , and it was my Mother's S10 pickup I think. I also had a clutch put in it when I had it on long tem loan until I got too many tickets. In fact even that I should've done myself or had one of my people do it, but I wanted to use a credit card. I drove it around the block and back in "This clutch is not right". Bah bah bah I got. OK, you MFs are going to eat shit when I come back. I had to have it pushed and I gave the service manager the keys and said "Drive this". I was VERY insistent. I got in his face. I am surprised the cops didn't come. (don't wonder why I knew half of them) They fucked the job up. I also made them admit it.

You know for many years I worked as a TV technician, one of the most distrusted professions in the world. I always tried to do my job right and if the company really gouged on the price I would get on them about it. As such, there are still a few customers who follow ME around. I really was fucking good, as well as honest. But I also stressed ethical and safety issues, when I was youngger so were they, and all I had to say to get it done was "You can get sued over this shit". I quit couple of companies because of ethical issues. Good paying too, out the ass.

Major chains work by the public perception the a bigger company is somehow more ethical than a fly by night. Bullshit. You know it and I know it and now in the land of inopportunity the ONLY way to get rich is to fuck people over. You got that ? The only way to get rich is to fuck people over.

People just don't get it. I am also a contractor. You want licensed, bonded and insured ? You WANT trouble. You want to see deep pockets. I am none of the above but there are people who trust only me. They write me a check so they know who got the money. If something happens and they win a lawsuit against me I lose everything I own. If I were licensed, bonded and insured I wouldn't, some MF over at Lloyd's Of London would write a check and I would be in the clear. Now who has more incentive to do the job right ?

Everythimg most people think about life is wrong. Mark my words. I will live or die by them.

DesFIP -> RE: Jiffy Lube Scam (8/5/2011 9:35:13 AM)

We had a tranny flush there after The Man mistakenly added the wrong trans fluid to his van. He picked up a bottle meant for one of the kid's cars instead. The lines were connected and we watched it because he found it interesting.

However my daughter took her car up for inspection there a couple of weeks ago. They passed it. A week later she broke down while visiting friends and went to the shop she used while in college up there. Turns out the brakes were shot, no pads left and the rotors all needed replacing. She brought them down to show us. After that, we took my stepson's car up for inspection. Again passed with flying colors and they never put it on a lift or pulled a wheel.

I need to wander by the state police one of these days and strongly suggest they investigate this place. They never ask us to do more work, never claim to do work that they don't, but this is a safety problem. I want to know if the brakes are bad, damn it.

Speaking thereof, the older stepson's just moved to Indiana. They don't get cars inspected there. I didn't know there was a state left that didn't require it.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Jiffy Lube Scam (8/5/2011 9:56:56 AM)

Sears was really bad about that stuff in the 80's also. Sell you stuff and not replace it like fuel or air filters, brake pads. A lot of the time they didnt even replace the oil filter when they did a change.

MileHighM -> RE: Jiffy Lube Scam (8/5/2011 10:08:50 AM)

Na, plenty of states don't require those types of inspections. Sad but true.

The problem with chains of anything is they like to hire cheap labor morons and make a policy of it. Then they inadequately train them and improperly supervise and manage them. They can do it because it is cheaper to fix the occasional fuck up then have a nationwide competent staff. I agree with termyn8tor, find a good reputable local guy. I have my shop that I go to, they have never fucked me, and it is easier to negociate a better bill with someone who actually controls their business. However, at the end of the day, know something about your car. If you don't, go to automd.com and make sure you aren't getting raped before you sign up to do anything.

However, I have to disagree with termyn8tor about licensing, insurance and bonding. Licensing protects reputable people who know what they are doing--sure there are exception. Insurance---well when I was in construction, I got sued. Not cause I did anything wrong, some bitch just didn't want to pay the $25k remodelling bill. If it wasn't for the insurance I would have been buried in the legal fees. They got me a lawyer and experts and we won the case. Proved she purposly damaged the work. I didn't have to pay for the repairs and the court made her pay for the balance of the job. On the flip side, if you hire someone without insurance, go ahead sue them. You prolly won't get dick and end up with a torn up house and no money. Lot's guys in my neck of the woods who will just dissappear if sued. I say stay with small, reputable, and local. You will always end up better off

in ca, you have the right to tell a mechanic when you are dropping your car for for repairs that you want all of your used parts returned to you. doesn't mean they can't throw in old parts belonging to someone else, but it does put them on notice.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Jiffy Lube Scam (8/5/2011 12:53:23 PM)

It's pretty much nationwide now pissdoll. The "Sears Scandal" was pretty instrumental in getting that passed in the mid 80's.

It wasn't just a couple of Sears auto centers doing it, it was a LOT of them.
