THE investigation into a Mosman bomb incident is now being headed by the robbery and serious crimes squad, which also deals with extortion attempts.

Assistant police commissioner Mark Murdoch did not confirm whether the 18-year-old girl was a victim of an extortion attempt - instead he said police were still unsure what they were dealing with.

"We don't know what we are dealing with...we are working very hard to find out exactly what it is, and equally important, what it isn't," Mr Murdoch said.

He said the girl was extremely calm despite the ordeal, with specialist officers with her.

Assistant police commissioner Mark Murdoch described the situation as a "very serious and sensitive matter".

"We are still treating the suspicious package as live," he said.

"I can't confirm whether it is strapped to the woman involved but she is still in the vicinity of the device."

She should be fine ... they'll have saturated the local mobile mast (or just pulled its plug) and will have a cordon in place sufficient to deal with radio detonation. Assuming it's not timed (and it's highly unlikely it is) the bomb unit will take a good, long look, and work from there.

Yes it's stressful for her but don't worry, she should be fine.

<muffled explosion>

Probably ;)

Muttling -> RE: Collar Bomb Drama In Progress (8/3/2011 7:15:19 AM)

They've removed the bomb.   Hopefully they can track it back to the bomber.

Dude! That is not funny!

If you want to joke about people dying, there is a new thread about the WBC.

I don't even want to imagine the terror that poor girl and her family is going through.

DarkSteven -> RE: Collar Bomb Drama In Progress (8/3/2011 7:18:55 AM)

I hope they catch the person who did this.

GreedyTop -> RE: Collar Bomb Drama In Progress (8/3/2011 7:21:47 AM)

I agree, Steven.. and soon (maybe strap that bomb on THAT person... right near their parents.... )

These kind of extortion attempts very rarely succeed, generally because there's any number of ways of tracing various details, and the police tend to (obviously) take it very seriously.

I don't think whoever did it will be at large for long.

<innocent look>

Moi? Surely not.

Related thing; I've got a mate who blows shit up for a living; she works as a civilian expert in explosive devices, analysing things like the remains of IEDs and mines, to establish "fingerprints" or commonalities between various groups, so the military or civilian authorities can gain a clearer picture of who is doing what, where, and how best to combat it. There's also data on yields from set amounts of explosive X, as well as the penetration testing of various military and civilian bomb casings to determine the best type of explosive, placement and size of charge necessary to disable an explosive device using other, more targeted, explosives.

She loves the job, partially because there's some very exacting scientific research and study involved, but also partially because she doesn't go a week without blowing something up to see what happens. I call that a pretty cool job :)

She also has a mine (geddit!) of hugely funny stories, like the newbie with lots of qualifications but zero common sense, who didn't check his calculations the mandatory 3 times when calculating the yield necessary to penetrate a <name of armoured vehicle deleted> with an IED of a new design that they were replicating for research purposes. Got the decimal point in the wrong place. Result? <excited phone call to me> "Bloody thing almost achieved near-earth orbit! There was a short "WTF?!" moment behind the sand bank, the newbie went white, then all four field phones went off at once with different COs screaming variations on a theme of "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!" ... I just said "we're breaking in a new bloke" and they all went "Oh. Right. Ok". I swear bits of it took a good 20 seconds to land".

:)

I want a job like hers!!!

(thats the kind of thing that makes me love the show MythBusters)

Some of it is somewhat heart breaking, as when remnants of IEDs or field samples are returned it's not unknown for small bits of people to be in there too, but yes it does sound rather entertaining. Usually when things go wrong :)

Another one: they're testing a very "cool" design of incendiary device; it starts a fierce fire, but then (as various coated layers of it denaturate) the fire gets worse, rather than dying out. They want to simulate what effect that could have on civilian fire crews if terrorists used a similar design, so they build one (a big one - "in retrospect, possibly a tad too big") and set fire to a test structure with it, with an Army fire crew standing by to "put it out", coz there's not much point seeing what happens if you've warned those taking part it’s an exercise first. They've got radios to link with the fire control people, and they've ordered them not, under any circumstances, to enter said structure, and the fire guys are smart enough to know that when the "boffins" say something like that, they bloody well mean it.

So, obviously, nothing can possibly go wrong.

One burned out Army fire tender later* ...

*”They parked up at what looked at first like an appropriate distance ... which rapidly wasn't” :)

Don't be so certain, I'm was EOD in the service and tracking generalities such as where the materials came from is easy but nailing it to one person isn't.   For example, the unibomber remained at large for decades and wasn't caught until his brother turned him in.

Termyn8or -> RE: Collar Bomb Drama In Progress (8/3/2011 9:03:42 PM)

This is just too tempting.

they got me tied down and are strapping a bomb to me and they say "Don't try to take this off or it will go off". Then I start trying to take it of and they say "Hey, if you try to take it off it will go off" and I say "Yeah, that's why I am trying to take it off" and they say "So you want to blow yourself up ? " and I say "Well not really but I want this thing off, so what are you trying to say ? ". "We are the Sybian Liberation Organization World and you will deliver our message". "What message ? ". "If they don't meet our demands we will blow up the bomb on your chest and show the world that we mean business".

Well people if you don't disagree with the policy of government of NEVER dealing with kidnappers, get fucking ready for this. I would. Stick a gun in my face. I'll laugh.

Stop the addiction to life so that you may live it. Like - at least I went out....................

Strange as it may sound you don't hear of people doing this to starving kids in Zimbabwe.

littlewonder -> RE: Collar Bomb Drama In Progress (8/3/2011 9:42:13 PM)

Turns out it was a hoax. There was no explosive on the collar

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-08-04/police-investigate-collar-bomb-hoax/2824638

So yeah she's fine but they're still tracing the device.

Termyn8or -> RE: Collar Bomb Drama In Progress (8/4/2011 1:08:20 AM)

You probably kick your own ass well enough, but as a good neighbor I could always help :-)

But I see it like nurse Chapel on Star Trek smacking Spock after he recovered from whateverthefuck. Smackin his face to no end and Scotty comes in thinking she is fucking crazy and then Spock gets him to smack him up. (Vulcans need high stimulation to come out of this trance or some shit after they recover from a serious injury or something)

It's just a matter of where you want it. And really, Nimoy musta been into something because they seemed like they were smacking him good, either that or they were great actors or he was a very unruly child. Or something.
