No. Folks seem to behave as if the entire universe is theirs.

It's not EVERYONE thank goodness, but the lack of acknowlegement of others is becoming pervasive.

Not really.

People are rude. Those are the type of people I run off at the mouth to.

It's sound like me having to take public transportation. Dumb twits decide to sit on the aisle seat and then make it so no one can sit beside them. I got so fed up I have pushed them to the window and then when they get pissy and they glare, I tell them. "You didn't pay for two seats."

I may just be an irritable bitch, but person like that needs to get pushed from them pushchair. XD Oh, wait, I am an irritable bitch. I would have fantasized about pushing her for a second or two.

While there are many well-mannered people out there, it seems that there's a hard core of 'entitlement' people out there too. The world revolves around them, and screw anyone who thinks otherwise.

I think in the UK it may be a bit worse because it's part of our culture to put up with crap and not to make a scene. Well, I don't do that any more. After years of living in london and being groped, pushed, stood on and generally disrespected on public transport I make a scene if someone is behaving unacceptably. I will quite happily say "will you get of my foot - you are hurting me" or "can you move your bag because it is hitting me in the face", or something like that. Often it works, particularly if repeated loudly and often enough to embarrass the other person.

One day my bike got a flat far from home. A stranger saw me walking it and gave me a lift.

When i was homeless i had more people than i can count help me in some way.

When i was depressed and writing about it in my journal on collarme, i had all kinds of people asking me if i was okay, and if i needed to talk.

My paycheck fell out of my pocket on the way to the bank, and a stranger found it and delivered it to my home (the address was on the check).

The same thing happened to me once with my wallet.

The people at the grocery store always give me the cardholders discount, even though i don't have a card.

My cat was hit by a car, and this man (not the guy who hit the cat) brought the cat to the vet to try to save him.

A driver took off after hitting a biker (not seriously hurt, thank goodness) and about 5 passersby jumped up to try to get the license plate number before the car sped away.

There are plenty of people who give a damn. You just have to look harder.

It's not a part of everyday life to "look harder." Everybody is on their way to somewhere else, but in times past consideration for others (of which basic awareness was a requisite) was part of the process.

All the events you mention involved good people, and nothing in the narrative indicates that you looked harder to find them, but rather that they found themselves to the situations described.

The OP was about the increasing situation of a good many people being unable to focus on the real world around them.

Yes, but i think the OP is taking a "glass is half empty approach". There are good people. There are bad people. There are people who don't give a shit about others. There are people who go out of their way to help others at no benefit to themselves. Both kinds are out there. i'm not sure if the bad ones outnumber the good ones, or vice versa. But if he is only ever seeing the bad ones and not the good ones, it is the fault of his own perception. They are there.

I'm not sure that the OP is going out of his way to point out 'bad people' or not. Could be.

But in my own experience, I merely wish to point out that an increasing number of people are unable to focus on everyday situations such as driving or even walking, due to the cell phone or texting. The university library allows cell phone talking, which renders the facility useless for study for someone like me. I've learned to take further sideways steps to avoid getting bumped into by  these 'focused elsewhere' people when walking, and sudden lane changes on the road (cell phone to ear) occur far more often than in times past.

None of these people are "bad people," they just have less use for the real world around them (by way of focus being elsewhere) than is safe or considerate for the situation they are in fact in.

David... look at the examples you gave. People talking too loud. People getting in your way. People listening to headphones near you. If THESE are the worst of your problems, then i'd say you have it pretty good.

After I had foot surgery a few years ago, I was in a wheel chair for a weeks and then in a walking cast, both of which made taking the bus a very difficult proposition. I had people complain about having to stand in order to make room for my wheelchair, and often there were seats available at the back of the bus. But getting on a crowded bus in the walking cast was even worst. I've had to stand while teenage girls took up two or three seats with their strollers, kids and bags. There happens to be a little-known federal law that kids are to be taken out of their strollers and the strollers folded when getting on the bus. It is seldom enforced, in my city because many drivers don't want to get into verbal matches with bitchy passengers.

The situation you describe is completely different than the topic the OP refers to. Not sure why you bring that up.

At least you with your foot surgery and the mothers with kids have something legitimate to 'impose' upon others (and with each other) about.

Someone blasting their headphones at such a level that it can be easily heard from the front to the back of a train car or bus is another issue.

While these things do seem trivial in the "real world" i.e. for most of us, for someone who has a developmental brain disorder they can make the world quickly seem chaotic and unmanageable. Loud noises and conversations are difficult to filter out and seem invasive, people walking in front of you are hard to make adjustments for.

Sometimes it does matter whose shoes one is walking in.

As for the OP, in general people just do not look at each other much anymore. I think we are afraid to, or sometimes are too busy to. And so as people become invisible to each other, there is simply less awareness and acknowledgement of those around us. It isn't so much rudeness but busy-ness or fear based indifference.

All of these issues people are complaining about were all there 22 years ago on public transportation.  So i really don't get why its being implied this is a new thing.  The only things changing is the type of annoyances with electronics.  But everything else has always been an issue.  20 years ago it was people with boomboxes or really shitty earphones etc.  People have always talked loud at times on public transportation, mothers have always had kids and strollers, etc etc.  People have always sat in 2 seats and put stuff next to them because most people don't like strangers sitting next to them.

Now grant it, i haven't taken public transportation on 20 years but from what people are complaining about -- it doesn't seem to have changed much.
