Status: offline 		quick background: Master graduates with His masters degree in august, i have one semester left in my aggie school, which He has said He will stick around for. i am supposed to enter an environmental design program at Umass in spring '07 - He has been talking about wanting to move to san fran for months [has a pretty good job offer out there - 78k]

i stare at Him blankly, thinking, however am i going to tell Him, i am not going on after next semester?

He asks me, "youre not staying here, are you?"

"No, Sir, please, i cant, New England isnt for me, the people are wrong for me"

"San Fran it is then" He replies

POINT: whats ur opinion of it out there? i have never been west of the rockies, but this is a definiate go, i have to chance that i will find what i am looking for out there.

Status: offline 		i was out there for a few days in march.  When it's nice, the weather is really nice, when it's raining it REALLY rains.  Don't rely on cab drivers, ever, they are jackasses, and everyone in general seems to be pretty on the offensive when driving.

There are some nice people out there...we even had a drug dealer help us find a certain nightclub (i wasn't the one that said okay to this!).   i just think the city is really beautiful in general, in general people are nice.

Status: offline 		I am a 5th generation Californian…I grew up in the SF Bay Area…so perhaps I’m partial.  It’s awesome there…the crème de la crème of the world, some say.  In SF you would be an hour or so from snow country, vineyards, farmland, country, and one of the best cities in the world, and of course, beaches. 

The weather is temperate, the traffic is bad, the food is awesome; hell…there are beaches!  What more could you ask for?  Lordy, I’m landlocked and I miss the coast.

That you are asking what to do here, though…troubles me.  Aggie?  California is a great Ag state…but, you should know this, no?

Status: offline 		Like bearlee I am a 5th generation Californian. The City (san francisco) is my favorite city in the world, I love it there.Although I am applying mostly in So Cal for my graduate schooling.

I went to an ag school for my 4 year degree, although I did not study that. Most Californian colleges have decent ag departments.

You should know there is nothing that California lacks from snow to sun and I would not want to live anywhere else really, even if it costs a lot. The Bay Area has an energy to it. There really is no place on earth quite like it.... Although I would love to see New England in the fall.

Status: offline 		We lived in CA for a year, and went into San Fran many times.  There is large lifestyle community there, which was wonderful.  We also enjoyed Ca, itself.  In very little driving time, you can be at the ocean, mountains, forest, desert, and the large cultural diversity was fun as well.

I'm pretty much in line with Bearlee. Born in San Francisco and grew up in Marin. I still own a home there and my family has never left. Great food, culture, sights and many fun things to do. Tahoe and Yosemite are just short skip up and down the road if you like skiing , water skiing or just hanging out. The only down side is the whole area is one of the most expensive places in the nation to live.

I will say this though (it's the mom in me...) I believe you'll be happier in the long run if you finish school.  Believe it or not, it's a lot easier to do it now and you'll have better employment options later.

Status: offline 		San Fran is a wonderful place to visit.  I go up there several times a year.  However when considering a move one must do some research.
78 grand...what will that buy in San Fran as opposed to say...where ever you live now?
There was a study done about ten year's ago...well not even really a study.  Though to be homeless up there you needed to make over 100,000 a year.  Otherwise you were in the poverty level.
So, I'd do just a wee bit of research first.  Find out how much home costs are and see where your money would go.  Would you still have enough money left over for food?  Utilities?  Let alone any sort of entertainment?

Status: offline 		Mexi I dont mean to rain on your parade but if you do some research and find out that him making 78k a year is about the same as a burger flipper making 8 bucks an hour here in WNY. Thats on top of the most horrif gas prices in the country and very expensive car inurance. Very expensive to live and very crowded, its like NYC + more hills and hippies and taxes.

Status: offline 		San Francisco has alot to offer, though the cost of living is very high. FACTS ABOUT COST OF LIVING  I am not sure exactly what information your looking for but here are some general facts. If you want some specific information please let me know I grew up in the San Fran. area.
 
Weather - The weather can and does change rapidly. Fog is not uncomman in the mornings and evenings. Summer typically ranges from the 60s - mid 80s and winter is about 20deg. cooler.
 
Musuems- There are many musuems here. If you are a cultural lover you will be in heaven.
 
Theaters- There are also many theatres available including many open air theatres.
 
Parks - There are many beautiful parks. Golden Gate Park is very popular and has cultural attractions and events often.
 
Clubs- You can find clubs with just about every focus from lifestyle & fetish clubs to jazz clubs.Most covers range from $2-$20.
 
Transportation- BART, cable cars, and buses.  operates from approximately 6:30am to 1:30am, and each ride costs $2. The Buses cost $1 for adults and 35¢ for seniors over 65 and children 5 to 17. The Streetcar fares are the same as for buses, and passes are accepted. Bart -- BART, an acronym for Bay Area Rapid Transit is the rail network and fares are from $1.15 to $4.30.

My local partner and I are moving this summer to live with my other partner who is attending school for his PhD in Austin, TX.

Why do this when my local partner and I are both near DC, with my and my other partners family still here and my other partner living in Boston?

Well, my local partners family is near Austin and it is where he is from.  I am fairly flexible in where I go and want to start living my life together in a stable poly house.  And my partner is situated where he is for awhile and I think the long term benefits of his income and career far outweigh anything else.

There's no promises for anything.  In fact we KNOW that Austin is not where we will ultimately be living.  But we want to start our lives together and there's no reason to put it off.  The time is right for now, and practically, this is the best choice for everyone.

So I say go, support him and be together.

Status: offline 		I've visited San Francisco on lots of occassions over the last couple of years and love it but I find California in general overated. However, wherever you go, once you have to get up in a morning to go to work the romance is removed and it just becomes the place where you live. It's the people in your life that are the most important and make a place special.

I have lived in and around San Francisco for about 20 years, and like all cities and localities, there are both good and bad things about it -- probably too many to list here.

First of all, it's expensive and crowded.  But no matter where you go in California, property values, rents, and taxes are high.

Secondly, the city is crowded.  I've heard that over 1 million cars cross the Golden Gate Bridge every day for the commute.  In fact, a car is pretty much useless in San Francisco, because you can either walk, take a trolly, bus, ride a bicycle much easier than trying to drive to your destination and find a parking place.

Don't get me wrong, SF is a beautiful city, with breathtaking sites to see, quaint cafes, and much history.  But if you don't mind living in a crowded city, it might be a real adventure for you.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.
