Not to want to complicate this any more, but while as for the local effects on the profitability of this curious arrangement for the benefit of Goldman and others in the rarefied air of those elite permitted to sit on the LME, you also need to consider that Goldman and some of the other financiers, are also investing in and buy into other things, many of which use metals as the raw materials for their manufacturing business. For instance I would be interested to find out how having Goldman as one of your investors or shareholders if you were running an auto parts plant in Ontario or Michigan might affect the delivery times and metal costs, as opposed to being one of their competitors. If I could adjust the supply costs and delivery times of my friends and enemies to aid the former, I would have an immense power.
