Pig tissue is very compatible with human tissue, heart valves are usually taken from cows and pigs.

They probably make the antivenom shots for spiders out of walruses...

lol i think pigs dna is closest to ours not sure

I thought chimpanzee DNA was closest to human DNA.

It is.

Pigs are useful models for humans in certain medical experiments because pigs are omnivores and can eat pretty much anythingwe eat. It turns out to be nearly impossible to get a chimp to eat cooked meat.

Correct. The percentage similarity depends on which system you use to compare them, but it's chimps and bonobos, yes.

Of course, David may simply have been speaking for himself ... or he may have confused tissue compatibility and rejective aggression with percentage of DNA, but they are not the same thing.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Human Animal Hybrids (7/27/2011 10:01:22 AM)

Chimps seem to have no problem eating raw meat, because they are also omnivores and quite predatory in the wild.

Yes, but you're still going to be on immunosupressants for the rest of your life.
(Myself, I'd go for a plastic valve, rather than a pig one: the pork valves only last as long as a pig does, and need replacing every dozen years or so...)

I hope I don't need one but I guess when it comes to dying, you take whatever you can get QUICK

There's actually a smaller difference between us and chimps than there is between chimps and gibbons, in terms of shared DNA.
The Great Apes is one of those cases of Victorian taxonomic special pleading designed to put a wedge between us and the rest of nature, while on closer examination, any group with the biodiversity of the great apes that doesn't include us as well is bullshit.

Of course you do. (Unless you're nuts or a Jehovah's Witness.)
I was just saying, if it's a plastic valve or having an operation that serious every dozen years, I'd go for the plastic valve, meself.

Like I said its cooked meat that they don't like.
