"I'm not really sure where this assumption that I don't know anything about backwards compatibility is coming from "

Another......ummm. I said thanks because you did inform, but the rant part of it was NOT directed at you. Just not sure how I should've made that clear. I didn't want to put an FR on the whole thing but,,,,,see what I mean ?

"Well, I suppose I could go into a long list of the advantages of modern operating systems and software versus 1990, but somehow I have feeling that is going to be lost... "

Quite perceptive LOL. (now ro figure out why I pick up your font when quoting....in the reply window anyway)

The gist of what I'm getting here is that it's easier to code for the newer browsers. Is that correct ? But what I really wonder is just what are all these features ? In my dinosaur I can see videos, click on things, the drags and drops work, all kinds of things. Just how much more can it do ? And to me, the question is why ? My knowledge of HTML is limited to I guess HTML one, done in notepad. But my point is it works.

"Well, DLink does kind of suck, but really, investing the $500 for a modern computer than can support a modern OS and modern software provides huge advantages compared to the stuff you seem to be running on, provided you take advantage of those advantages and not remain cemented in this "older is better" mentality."

Every time I upgrade I seem to not be able to do something that I want to do. For example I learned how to put new shortcuts into the sendto menu, in 98 it was easy, then in XP it took me a bit to find it, but i did. But then in Vista I found it and the damthing won't LET me put anything in there. I don't want to change the file associations. For example I put image editors in there so I can force it to open in Paintshop or Adobe, media files I can force to open in VLC and quite a few things I like to see in notepad.

I admit I'm a dinosaur. If I ever buy a new car (under threat, duress and coersion I assure you) there will be bullet holes appearing in the dashboard until the thing stops nagging me to put my seat belt on. Seriously. I think I want a Model T.

"I also think your undercutting a lot of the value of having a modern browser. I can't think of anyone (besides you) who doesn't believe that IE 9 (or even IE 8) is a significant improvement over IE6. "

Next to the back button in IE6 is  little bar. It will open up a dropdown with recently viewed pages. I am going to use it when I get done with this post. The usual back button doesn't want to take me back to the list of topics, and it's the same in IE8. However in IE8 my only choice seemed to be to make a bookmark for collarchat.com to get back. That is an example of a pet peeve. And though it's not really that big a deal I HATE how IE8 looks. And I don't want tabs, I want mutiple instances.

"I don't need to. It's the "Cannot connect to webpage error", typically resolved by reconnecting to your wireless router or plugging in your ethernet cable. "

Not 12007. I could be wrong but it seems to me no matter what browser you use, Windows and thus IE is involved. I've read a few pages about it and figured out how to correct it, but it's so much fun because it won't connect. Break out the thumbdrives or whatever.

"It's a huge improvement over Vista. As a devoted Ubuntu/Linux user, I have to swallow my pride and admit that I like Windows 7 almost as much as I like Ubuntu. "

I see the word "almost" :-)...... I have only played with Linux of any flavor a little bit, but it keeps looking better and better. Will Ubuntu run off CD like the older versions ? I've run the old dinoversions and while I realize there are alot of things you can't change in it obviously, it's kinda nice to have a totally bulletproof OS. Running off CD is about as secure as it gets I think.

I'm still working on figuring out what is up with my font not showing up consistently. I'm probably going to have to chalk it up to this being a shitty text editor. It won't let me see the markup directly so I can't figure out where the hiccups are.

The main advantage of upgrading your browser is that the web community, in general, has been moving towards a set of standards that simply were not present back in the day when it was just IE6 and NetscapeNavigator duking it out. IE8 is the first version to really throw in the towel and stop being all non-comformist. You'll run into a lot less issues with webpages rendering in weird ways if you, as a consumer, upgrade to IE8. I can think of quite a few websites that simply will not work in IE6 because of how different it's Javascript engine is from modern browsers.

The other advantage is that every person who upgrades to IE9 makes HTML5 one step closer to becoming the new standard and that is going to be a big deal. Tired of downloading Flashplayer to watch Hulu? HTML5 supposts video and audio tags that allow developers to embed video directly in their webpages without needing Flash.

I can understand your frustration with UI changes with each new OS upgrade. They tend to get on my nerves, too, hehe.

As far as the issues with IE and the back button, I don't know what to tell you. I am a Firefox man. If I get bored, I might pop open IE and see what's going on.

I will always love Ubuntu, because in general, unless your doing development in Microsoft .NET, Ubuntu (or really any Linux implementation) is the best OS for programmers. It's makes our lives so much easier. However, from an user perspective, it's a lot easier and less time consuming to do common tasks in Windows 7

Ubuntu will probably always boot off USB drives and CDs. It's one of their strongest selling points (and a great way to subvert Windows to get access to a hard drive).

I haven't upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 yet. The new GUI looks slick, but when I tried it out a few months ago, they had some work to do. They jumped the gun a bit on getting that out the door.

"I'm still working on figuring out what is up with my font not showing up consistently. I'm probably going to have to chalk it up to this being a shitty text editor."

Remembering the old dinosaur ways now..... some of the characters as well as line feeds were handled differently by Unix and DOS. I think that was part of the confusion. I still see some URLs with dollar signs and ampersands.

But now the text editor, I don't know if this happens to anyone else but sometimes when I reply to a mail each hit of the enter key produces a double space. When that happens to me, it sends a blank message. I've had a couple of people mail me back with " Did you intend to send me a blank mail ? ", or " Did you forget to type ? ". So now the first thing I do is hit enter. If it double spaces I go back and hit reply again and usually that straightens it out, a few times it took more than once, but that is rare. The only thing I can figure is that there is more than one copy of the text editor on the server(s) and sometimes I get the wrong one.

I've used Firefox at work. Where the hell is "save target as" ? I want a PDF and I want it stored and don't even want to view it at the time, in fact I would rather not be stuck in a browser window with it.

"I can understand your frustration with UI changes with each new OS upgrade. They tend to get on my nerves, too, hehe. "

That's not the half of it for us dinosaurs. My monitor has a rectangular screen, so I think windows should be rectangular, not rounded on the corners. By the same token I think cars should be rectangular because they have four wheels. They can be square on the corners and still be aerodynamic, if they can't design them maybe I should do it for them. I also have this strange desire to see the hood when I'm driving. Maybe that's why alot of people tailgate these days, they don't know they're doing it !

Under the hood is another story, but what little I do know about HTML other than one book I learned by View>Source. That doesn't work so well these days because it comes out mostly gibberish. I suppose there are editors around that will parse it so that you can see what the heck is going on, but I don't have one.

Is Ubuntu free ? IIRC the older versions are, but it's getting pretty slick and you can't expect people to work for free forever. I wouldn't mind giving it a spin. The versions I have are too old for my hardware. Actually Bigdaddy 9.3 finds the netcard in my laptop which is not that old (RTL8186 I think), but I can't seem to get online with it. Actually on one of my laptops I'm locked out of a WD1600BEVT harddrive, why I don't know but on the web I found that it has happened to alot of people. There is some code you can download, or even copy it from text that is supposed to fix that, but on this particular laptop if the HD is in there it will refuse to boot from CD even if I exclude the HD from the boot list. I am to the point where I think I know why they were so cheap, <$500 with everything including a 17" screen and a full keyboard. One day I will back up all my technical shit and then take all of them out back and shoot them. One got stolen, and at this point believe me I am not lamenting the loss.

Eventually I'll just stick another HD in it and load XP. I have already found many of the drivers. Then the WD goes where I think all WDs should go. I lost alot of data on WD drives and I won't knowingly buy another. These came with them. I had a good piece of blowout.com on one of them and it starting it's tick tick shit. Blowout was one hell of a good porn site, especially for the kinky. And USC2257 didn't get to them, the guy who owned it died in a car wreck. I might have about a dozen pictures from there left.

"They jumped the gun a bit on getting that out the door. "

I hope they're not taking lessons from Microsoft, or EGAD - AOL !
