Thanks for the post, Hill.  I think you're absolutely right.

We're not suffering from heat here.  Summers are actually pretty mild.  (Sorry, folks, but it's true.)  The guys who deploy from the base a couple of hours away have to deal with climate changes that are 30-40 degrees hotter and it must reek havoc on them.

Most folks don't realize that they have it so much better than the people who are deployed.

yeah- it is a rah rah post to celebrate the endless wars.    would there be war if no one signed up for it?

Didnt we just pay  billions AC bill in Iraq?     A few people on this board have no ac, and live in marginal neighborhoods...I happen to-  but I know of at least one who does not.

yeah i know some people who still have hands..and all their body parts..and can type stupid shit like you do..at least you still have all your limbs.(.be thankful.. you havent stepped on an ied.)...but then you would have to be a soilder to experience that..

Then dont sign up.

we could stop murdering Arabs.

we could have an exit strategy-   this is worse then Vietnam.

How many wars is it now,  5 or is it 6?

In our lifetime we know nothing but war.  We could have changed that but we dont- instead we allow and enable war.

just dont sign up..... 2 brothers dead 5 still fighting and you know what they signed up for.... COLLEGE tuition.... They dont want to be there.... You think they enjoy it??? You think i enjoy those fucking class A uniforms at my door with crosses?!? huh?!? you think its so fucking simple??? if it was i would have all 8 brothers alive.... not 6 and graves to tend....

apologies for flipping out... trying my best to quit smoking and legs still buggin me...

I dont know why anyone would join the service for college money.  MIT has  courses online for free.  I know many who have degrees who can not find a job in their field....   the college model is broken.  Real wages have actually fallen in the last 30 years- while corporate and CEO profits are at record highs... even worse then this is that the best and the brightest- who are the product of the college mill,  caused this financial collapse- now 3 years in progress with no one fixing it for good.

LadyPact -> RE: The heat wave (7/22/2011 1:52:36 PM)

Lots of reasons, PA.  For example, in this economy, those online degrees aren't seen nearly with the same appreciation as someone who demonstrates that they are dedicated to going to the University on campus.  It means no student loans that people can't climb out from under.  Not to mention, somebody in the service confirms that they have work experience, even if it isn't in the field that they have their education in.

My son has his college education as part of his signing bonus.  However, that's not the only reason that he joined.  He's wanted to serve his country ever since he was very small.  The only other thing I ever remember him wanting to do was he said he wanted to be a fireman when he was about three.  It's literally been darn near the only thing he's ever wanted to do.  He wants to be in service to his country.

LaTigresse -> RE: The heat wave (7/22/2011 1:59:29 PM)

Hey.......Generic Dude spent plenty of time in the Middle East during summer at the beginning of all this mess and he is still complaining about the heat the last few days.

Me, I will always be bitching about how hot it is in July and August and how cold it is in January........cuz that is what we Iowans do![:D]

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: The heat wave (7/22/2011 2:01:43 PM)

People ask me why I wear a poppy every day instead of just on Veteran's Day.  I tell them that vets and those still in service should be honored every day and it's my way of doing just that.

My thanks to all who serve no matter what country you're from ~salutes~

Zeph

LaTigresse -> RE: The heat wave (7/22/2011 2:07:07 PM)

G.D. had a general that I really liked. One of the few I actually liked. In one of his speeches he talked mostly about, and to, the families of soldiers. How important they are and how vital. That their support of the soldier is as much 'serving the country' as the soldier's service. Seeing what many of the young families of G.D.'s soldiers went through during deployments, I have to agree.

Kudos to the families for all they do, to make the soldier's job easier to do.

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: The heat wave (7/22/2011 2:11:59 PM)

~does the V8 slap~ Yes of course LaT thanks to the families of those who serve and condolences to those who have lost family members. Your strength in the face of worrying about loved ones who are overseas is an inspiration to me.

I don't think they were ever regarded with the same respect.

As for signing up to get education, that's completely understandable but a bit naive, I mean being a professional soldier does carry a certain risk and to imagine anything else would be more than being in denial, it doesn't mean that I wish those guys ill or that I think they deserve the risk they are taking, but it's very much the same as signing up for any high risk job, you have to be aware what might happen in the worst case scenario.

Actually this inspired a question that is possibly best left for another thread, the discrepancy that people can sign up for military service and die for their country, but the same country doesn't deem them old enough to order a beer in a bar or a pub before they're 21 - always floors me, if they're old enough to handle weapons and risk their lives, how can they not be old enough to order a drink?

Amen to that.

And it was 108 in NJ today with something like 98% humidity. I appreciate those in Service for our country, my cousin did a tour in the Army, then a tour in the Marines, but dammit, I'm still freaking sweating my butt off!

My husband joined because he got tired of being the dopehead high school dropout with a GED and wanted to finally make something of his life and for us to have a family, a home and everything that goes along with it.

He wanted to make a career out of it because it really helped him to fix a lot of his life that he had fucked up. It saved him and would have died a lot earlier in his life had it not been for the military.

And for people like him I highly recommend it. It's not just about college and money but about survival for many when it's the last place to turn to.

SeanPony -> RE: The heat wave (7/22/2011 4:40:45 PM)

This heat wave is great for drinking beer :)

pahunkboy -> RE: The heat wave (7/22/2011 5:22:05 PM)

I suppose it is good for the right reasons... for those who have thought it out completely.

soul2share -> RE: The heat wave (7/23/2011 12:41:16 AM)

well, it's been god-awful hot here, but the heat isn't really a problem for me, it's the damn humidity!  It's rained pretty good the last few days, and last night, I was outside thinking "hmmmm, this doesn't feel too bad"....till I went inside, and when I hit the a/c, my pants felt like I'd taken them right out of the washer and put them on.....ewwwwww!

I miss the AZ summers.....no humidity at all!  Here, I walk 20 feet to the car, and I already need another shower!

I just wish we could get all of our men and women home.....we need to start taking care of our needs and protect our country and let everyone else deal with their own crap.  Arrogance got us there, it's gonna take balls to get us out.

LadyConstanze -> RE: The heat wave (7/23/2011 3:27:57 AM)

The problem as I see it is, if everybody pulls out, you're ending up with total chaos there, which long term might even be a bigger threat. I wasn't for the stupid war (especially not on the false pretenses), but pulling out without a thought for what will happen, that would even be worse and in the long run possibly would lead to more wars and more lives lost.

Bollocks!
Wars stretch far back into history, in between, and before the World Wars there were myriad battles and skirmishes around the Colonies and between neighbouring countries. It's nothing new and the current wars are a fart in the bath compared to days gone by.

The World is like a big wedding reception, you know there will be a fuck and a fight.

pahunkboy -> RE: The heat wave (7/23/2011 8:00:59 AM)

WRONG.    In my lifetimes this country has always been at war.

You do realize the entire world has been at war since the creation of man right?
