I was downloading a few large files earlier and had a little too much time to think.

My current connection on a bad day still doesn't clock below 30mbs.  It just barely seems like it was yesterday (ok it was the early 2000's) I would be joyful if the damn dial up connected at 30kbs.

I had a good connection with the Microsoft server.  Kids playing on the other computer, Mrs catching up on some facebook messages, and I am still watching my file zip along at 4mbs.  I can remember sitting there not daring to do anything on the computer while trying to download an update,  Watching the speed drop and drop, 4kbs, 3kbs, connection lost.

We had a dsl in the apt back in 2001.  Since then we have never been without some type of high speed connection at the house.  But working on the road back in those days everything turned on the dial up.

Nightmares of trying to connect, losing connections,  taking hours to download, being in hotels where the modem and the switchboard were incompatible .

Was that really only 10 years ago.

There are days when it seems the dial up with a one computer house was faster than it now is. Two teens on XBox, one on Skype, and everybody on a laptop eats a lot of bandwidth.

Well, right now I switched to U-verse......get it hooked up tomorrow.  I gave up on the cable company.......they are just too expensive, and we're at odds right now anyway.  For now, I have a Sprint USB thingy that is absolutely useless...thank goodness for the 30 day money back guarantee......cuz I'm sending this thing back.  Dial up is faster than this thing!

I dun't know much about the technical things, but I guess I have to add more memory to my computer...which is odd.  I did a clean wipe, and have less on my c drive than I did then, and there's no difference in speed.  I put my pics on a thumb drive, and don't have any music on my hard drive.  Just the basic programs.

I hope the U-verse is good.....I refuse to bow to the cable company, but need something faster than I have now....it takes a good 3 minutes to load a page.....and that's only after I hit refresh 2 or 3 times.  {sigh}

Downloads over night and then making sure you would switch it off, sending just a sound clip (not even a song) took ages...

I still remember the sound of the dial up modem, terribly squeaking noises you could hear several rooms away, though I think that was more than 10 years ago...

I was downloading batches of photos last night. 40MB. 32MB. 65MB. In just a few seconds. Under a minute, anyway. Then it occurred to me that the hard drive on my first computer (1991) was only 20MB. I remember in 1992 I bought a used Practical Peripherals 9600 modem and dumped my internal 2400. I thought I had died and went to heaven.

We were still on dialup until 2002 when we moved to a neighborhood that could get DSL. We had a separate landline just for the computer. I never even knew what the phone number was. It didn't have a phone connected to it - just the computer. I love cable modem. I download anywhere from 100GB to 250GB a month. The first month I had cable modem I downloaded 850GB. Comcast didn't like that but I have kept it under their 250GB soft cap since then. 12MB is plenty fast for me.

Yeah Term and all I could think was why the hell would you want to?

Soul---  We're in a Verizon area so we've got FIOS.  They finished running the fiber in our area sometime in March.  We were scheduled the day after it was all connected and running.  It's been great.

Lady C, it really was.  You got to remember how many people were still on dial up in 2001.  We had a dsl but I remember during that time COX was ripping up chunks of the cable system and redoing it so they could get ready to provide internet.  When I was on the road?  Nothing but dial up, lol.  No hot spots, no mobile broadband, no high speed wifi at the hotels.

It's all just like a bad nightmare now,  :).

Just because. Like when I took my buddy's 1950 Chevy for a spin. It was like WORK ! Actually one day I wouldn't mind driving a Model A or T. It's gotta be like a cross between a small farm tractor and an old go kart.

Not something for every day mind you. Could you imagine a youtube clip in ASCIIvision ?

I got AOL fairly soon when it was available in Europe because it was so convenient for traveling, I recall you had to pick the nearest connection point and log in (billed by the minute and phone costs on top of that horrendous) but at least it worked in most places. My laptop bag was full with different adapters and phone jacks (not to mention that the laptops were heavy, chunky things). I recall conversations with the AOL service... "We need your ScreenName" Gave them my SN and got "No, you can't have a 5 letter SN, they all have at least 8 letters..." So I told them I have had it for a while...
I didn't like the AOLverse, they made you think that they were the internet, but for logging in from different places it was quite good.

Ive had cable since 1997 I think maybe 98, Im downloading at 10mb per sec but paying handsomly for the "privilege" of downloading more than 175 gig a month(five computers in the house)

You sound just like us.  (After I married MP, of course.)  We did put in that separate land line specifically for DSL.

We are so spoiled now as compared to then.  It's absolutely mind boggling.

Have to admit, I am spoiled with the cable, altho I dont use a phone line or the tv anymore, cable will be the last to go.Its my lifeline to my family , my business, my friends who are across the pond and in the US.
Yes I would be deaf and blind without my internetz
*I do have a cell phone tho*

I remember when my brother first go his.  It was right when the phone company started offering and it had to be on a separate line.  Then when I got mine a bit later it had those new fangled filters.

"and you had to remind me WHY??? "

To make you feel good. Nice guy like that.

You all might not know it but I am leaving. Now I am not one of these bitchy whiney bitches who are crying that everyone here doesn't treat me like a king, but my internet is fucked up and it keeps blowing routers. I am sick of it and I am going to cancel the whole goddamn thing. And I am letting them take their fucking landline with it.

I have my reasons. The money, well the deal is OK, but I have sent salesmen away from RR and such telling them how good it was, and reliable. The next fucking day it's out. Damn. I just ain't payng for it anymore.

Mind you, I am not leaving CM at all, I am leaving the internet. I'll be back when and if. Like cable TV, I DID actually build the ultimate descrambler and if I had paid up, my bill would have been $500 a month. I had ALL the PPVs, both playboy channels and all the movie channels for like $18 a month. I decided it wasn't worth it. It wasn't worth the $18.

This is how I am looking at it. I don't need it anymore and this will give me time to really think. All the true innovators in this world reclused themselves, at least for a time.

I think it's my time. Enjoy. I bid none ill will, even those who call me names and shit here. I have no problem with that. But I am not getting what I need. Ever play chess ? You know what it means to regroup ?

Don't get me wrong, I'll be around, but it will not be the same.
