"Teabilly bastards just don't get that it is CONSUMPTION which is the driver of the economy, not production."

Short term only. Production pays the fucking bills. If you don't pay the bills you have to borrow more. Oh wait, that is what is happening.

Ron Paul had a good idea how to solve the problem. He proposed simply for the Treasury to cancel the roughly $1.6 trillion in its securities currently on the balance sheet of the Federal Reserve (money created from thin air). That would immediately reduce the outstanding federal debt by the same amount.  So, the problem solved. Regrettably, thinking ability is not part of people who matter in Washington.

Regrettably, Ron Paul is a senile idiot.

I proposed to Discover to simply cancel my credit card debt.

I don't know why but they didn't buy the thin air argument.

The Federal Reserve of course is owned by private banks. Ron Paul idea does not mean there will be no losers. It would be kind of internal default on debt that may not have much international consequences. The US will default one way or another, the debt will never be paid. Everybody knows that. Ron Paul as a sound money advocate prefers writing it down instead of just gradually and increasingly devaluing the currency.

Yeah, nobody; China, EU, Japan, nobody, would take the least notice if we defaulted 'internally'.

The majority of the debt is held by U.S. citizens.

That's just the start of how insane an idea this is.

You do understand that debt is owned by other entities? How would you react if someone who owed you money suddenly decided to never repay you?

Do you have any idea how much of the debt is held by odinary americans? Do you knw how many people's retirements would be wiped out by your proposal?

Let's try something a little more basic, why would someone invest in a low interest bond like the various Treasury securities?

Or we could listen to this guy...he has made a little money in his life...

During a meeting with President Obama yesterday, billionaire investor Warren Buffet said the debt ceiling should be completely done away with. Buffet argued the debt ceiling is nothing more than an “artificial limit” that wastes Congress’ time. “All it does is slow down a process and divert people’s energy, causes people to posture. It doesn’t really make any sense,” Buffet said during his White House visit to discuss charitable giving.

It's not like anyone is wasting time passing bills that have no chance of going anywhere, instead of coming up with REAL solutions instead of talking points for their own ads in the next election.

The idea was like an alarm clock.  Unfortunately it is constantly going off, and we are semi-awake, but not doing anything with our lives.

GOP "we can`t afford default"

Finally some fucking sense.

If those sensible voices talked more instead of the radical fringe, Republicans could walk off with the next election.

Instead, that party's become an insane asylum.

I havent heard anyone in the GOP who says that default would not be a disaster. What some have said is we wont default if the debt limit isnt raised by Geithners 4th drop dead date of 8/2, and they are right.

Guess you were not paying attention

Guess you cant read, or are lying as always. The article talks about delaying payments for a few days, not defaulting.

Bonds are due on a specific date. Failure to pay on that date is default.

Yes. And failure to renew WILL result in default, won't it now ? If not, there would be no need to raise the debt cieling now would there ?

That makes the US vulnerable to people who are not only not elected, but not even citizens. All they have to do is say no. Not a shot needs to be fired.

Who is the strongest nation in the world now ?

So that's why the debt ceiling will be raised.

All the rest is to give people something to talk about on the way to 2012.

Yup, it's a no brainer. Congress will raise the debt ceiling. That's their job. In any event, it's simply a distraction. Congress balking over the debt is yet another bright shiny so that the voting public will forget they are supposed to be doing something about jobs which is the real crisis .. not another debt raise which we 'always' do regardless of which party sits in the Big Seat. If they would just demolish the bitch all together we can get on to more serious business and quit wasting time. I tell you, I am so fucking disgusted at this point I could just spit.. and that means a lot coming from someone who always swallows!

You can fool all of the people some of the time.. but only for so fucking long. Most of us just aren't buying it anymore which is why the numbers for congress are ever dwindling.

I agree Bita! It's disgusting posturing. I say we scrape this current Congress off our shoes and start over with people other than career politicians.

Here`s what the kid toucher has to say.....

Nugent starts off with the debt issues then goes bonkers all over the place.

"A nasty, unclean gaggle of Americans read the nonstop reports of mass graves in Mexico, the mountains of dead bodies, the unending exhuming of slaughtered innocents and decapitated citizens and public officials at the hands of evil drug cartels, then nonchalantly purchase another load of the mind- and life-destroying dope that these subhuman heathens peddle. You have to be on dope in order to fail to admit how your illegal or “medical” marijuana consumption creates wanton death and mayhem in your own communities and country. Thanks for nothing, idiots"

He calls himself a teaparty member, btw.

What's really wrong here is why washed-up rock stars are taken seriously for their political views.

And I use the term star generously.

Even when I was growing up no one took this lunatic or his music seriously.

I mean really, "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang"?  The guy is a moron.

"Anti-Tax Zealot Grover Norquist Is Fine With Letting the Bush Tax Cuts Expire"

http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2011/07/anti-tax_zealot_grover_norquis.html

Republicans do not like taxes. That much is certain. But one of the reasons Republicans in Congress are so dead set against raising any taxes by any amount on anyone or anything, even if that's what it takes to reach a deal on the debt ceiling and keep the American economy from collapsing, is because their hands have been tied by the Americans for Tax Reform pledge that 95 percent of them have signed. The only thing more unforgivable to ATR than voting to raise taxes is voting to raise taxes after having vowed in writing never to do so. Meanwhile, Democrats demand that any debt-reduction plan must include some kind of new tax revenues, which is why Congress finds itself at an impasse. But maybe the Washington Post has stumbled upon an escape hatch:

With a handful of exceptions, every Republican member of Congress has signed a pledge against increasing taxes. Would allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire as scheduled in 2012 violate this vow? We posed this question to Grover Norquist, its author and enforcer, and his answer was both surprising and encouraging: No.

In other words, according to Mr. Norquist’s interpretation of the Americans for Tax Reform pledge, lawmakers have the technical leeway to bring in as much as $4 trillion in new tax revenue — the cost of extending President George W. Bush’s tax cuts for another decade — without being accused of breaking their promise. “Not continuing a tax cut is not technically a tax increase,” Mr. Norquist told us. So it doesn’t violate the pledge? “We wouldn’t hold it that way,” he said.

I'm flabbergasted. For this lunatic (Noquist) to make a reasonable statement on anything is beyond surprising.
