Did you know that it is biologically impossible for possums to get rabies?
No I didn't know that, but that's probably because it isn't true. They are resistant to it, but not immune.

Opossums, like most other animals, are susceptible to infection by the rabies virus; however, very few rabid wild opossums have been documented. Extremely high doses of the virus have been required to experimentally infect opossums as they seem to be highly resistant to the disease.

It's also interesting to note that that sketch has given rise to an incorrect collective noun which is now so widely repeated that even "experts" will claim it to be genuine, when it isn't :)

Superb :)

That may be but it's not good for my chances of keeping my food down.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: Please sign.. (7/13/2011 1:12:51 PM)

I guess no one wants my rodent kabobs then.

Well, DANG.

myotherself -> RE: Please sign.. (7/13/2011 1:14:21 PM)

It's not a flange of baboons, no.

But even scientists are now quoting it, which is just wonderful IMHO :)

myotherself -> RE: Please sign.. (7/13/2011 1:50:25 PM)

I saw them chat about it on QI a month or two back. Made me laugh out loud! [:D]

I'm sorry heather, but your information is incorrect. My Husband and I work wildlife damage control for our state, and have our information as directly from a current and reputable source as possible. The oppossum is a marsupial. Marsupials, for some reason we don't quite understand yet, cannot contract or carry rabies.
Your information about the resistance factors are correct, however, and are as close to the current information we have as far as understanding why this is so.

It's a slightly spooky thought, but damn funny, that a TV comedy can add to the language :)

They won’t be home and dry though, until the OED accepts it.

Surely Wikipedia is the first step to acceptance?

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: Please sign.. (7/13/2011 2:01:29 PM)

I'm afraid it isn't my information that is incorrect, but rather it would seem that all the information is incorrect if we are to believe you.

The problem with deer is that they're covered with poison ivy. You touch one, you get it.

myotherself -> RE: Please sign.. (7/13/2011 10:36:32 PM)

when I get bored I like to "edit" Wikipedia.

None of my changes lasts longer than a couple of days though [:(]

I mean, I have heard from a VERY reliable source that the Queen went nude bungee-jumping on her last New Zealand trip. Honest!! [:)]

Oh it's you that does that, eh?
