This is the douchebag that people rioted in support of.

55 dead, more than 2,000 injured and property damage in excess of $1B. All over this guy. Amazing.

Rodney King is the FACE, I tell ya, of the Democrat Party! He should be o'dingdongs new running mate. Would make perfect sense to me. WHY NOT? What, are you prejudiced?

Why can't we all get along (and do as Dear Leader tells us to do?).

Yes, and they'll riot again. Come on man... get with the program. Any program.

King's 1991 beating by Los Angeles police officers after a traffic stop left him with skull fractures and brain and kidney damage. It was captured on video by a nearby resident, and four officers were indicted as a result.

But their trial the following year led to three acquittals and a mistrial in the predominantly white suburb of Simi Valley, verdicts that set off three days of riots in African-American neighborhoods. By the time it was over, 55 people were dead, more than 2,000 were hurt, and property damage exceeded $1 billion.

I think they were rioting about the police brutality and subsequent skate of the law, not about supporting King to drive drunk.

IMO the two are separate, the beating was disgusting and 3 of the officers being acquitted and the 4th resulting in a mistrial equally so.

Yes it's terrible that he was apparently driving under the influence but it doesn't change the fact that the beating was horrific and never should have happened.

people were rioting about police brutality, not about the person. if you can't understand the difference, then you have a problem with perception/comprehension.

It would not have happened if he had pulled over instead of fleeing from the police on a high-speed chase in excess of 100 mph.

I'm not excusing the excess use of force but I'm damn tired of seeing him portrayed as a helpless victim.

He endangered the lives of innocent people by his reckless actions.

considering that it also happens to people who AREN'T fleeing at 100 mph, i don't really think it would have made a difference.

Yeah because beating him so bad he had skull fractures and brain and kidney damage was there only option. People are pulled over all the time for reckless driving and yet they aren't beaten to the point of severe damage. There was simply no excuse for what they did.

Curious here-   the guy got millions $ in a settlement-   how much of that did  he give to the community?   With a million dollar settlement he could have easily given 50k to charities in LA.

So rioting is an appropriate response?

Well again, as I said, I'm not excusing the excessive use of force but he created the situation that caused the outcome.

In this country's history rioting seems to be a rather time honored tradition of showing one's disdain for the powers that be.

Of course it is never very smart to riot in your own back yard.

But he was.

Let me ask you something.  What if he had plowed into another car during that chase and killed a young child?  Would you still be viewing him as a victim?

How not to get your ass kicked by the police

I hope they put his dumb, drunk ass away.

Rioting is just an excuse for people to take out their frustrations in their own life and blame it on something or someone else.

Look at what happened in Vancouver over a hockey game.

WTF?  What if he sprouted wings, began to walk on all fours, and converted to Mormonism?

Hypotheticals are too easy.

Let me sum up your argument and the counter to it.

Your argument is that he is a piece of trash.  Which is true, but it doesn't change the fact that the officers, who should IMO be held to a higher standard than average citizens, broke the law when they beat him.  The beating was done when he was defenseless.

When the verdict was announced, it incited outrage.  The rioters felt that the justice system had failed them, so they expressed themselves illegally.

Let me sum it up for you:

King - piece of crap.
Beating officers - pieces of crap.
Justice system that acquitted them - piece of crap.
Rioters - Pissed off pieces of crap.

I believe that you are arguing over the relative crappiness of various pieces.

What happened to him prior shouldn't have an influence.  If the guy was driving drunk, he should receive the same penalties as anybody else who has multiple DUI convictions.  The prior incident doesn't make Me feel that he needs to get softer penalties for crimes he's committing today.

Actually zephyr, it happens more then you think.   Not everyone is fortunate enough to have media coverage of the beating.

http://www.wktv.com/news/local/Outside-investigators-called-in-to-look-into-alleged-case-of-police-brutality.html

http://www.patrickgecklelaw.com/163899/2011/06/30/famous-police-brutality-cases----presented-by-the-law-offices-of-patrick-geckle.html

Just a couple off the first page in Google.

I lived in LA during the riots, the beating was televised more times then I care to remember.   Please don't think I am condoning what happened, brute force is, well...brutal.   That said, if Rodney would have complied and done as told by the officers, perhaps this could have been avoided.  Note I said perhaps.  Police see things and experience people at their finest, on a daily basis, you couldn't pay me enough to do their job.   A good cop is something to be cherished, but they do have a bad apple periodically.  There were alot  of  "what ifs" and "if only" speculations that happened during that trial.   We can't blame Rodney King or the cops for the riots, that was just an excuse for human behavior to shine.
