White middle class gains have been "wiped out" also. Why the special treatment?

How did that happen?

I thought the Bush tax cuts were creating jobs and prosperity.

Oh, never mind, I remember now.

We just didn't cut taxes enough.

If at first you don't succeed............

"Economists say the Great Recession lasted from 2007 to 2009. In 2004, the median net worth of white households was $134,280, compared with $13,450 for black households, according to an analysis of Federal Reserve data by the Economic Policy Institute. By 2009, the median net worth for white households had fallen 24 percent to $97,860; the median black net worth had fallen 83 percent to $2,170, according to the EPI." from the OP

I'm glad we agree that there is "special treatment" happening.

Just for you, I have bolded the glaringly obvious "special treatment" that practically jumps off the page at me. In 2004, net worth for whites was 10 times that of blacks. In 2009, whites' median worth was approx 45 times of blacks paltry net worth of $2170.

It takes a big effort not to see this. OTOH, a simpleton could probably pick it out in less than 10 seconds.

One racial group being worth c45 times that of another racial group screams "special treatment' in anyone's language Willbur. How can this be explained without recourse to racism?

Hello sam,

That you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful response.
:)
We can agree to disagree about Black people that reside in integrated communities doing "better" than those that do not.
Unless integrated is code for college educated and Middle Class.

I started a thread last week about how budget cuts are impacting students, especially is area's that have a high number of disadvantaged students.

School budget cuts will impact disadvantaged students

I agree electing President Obama is an incredible achievement of historic proportions in American history.
It is ironic, that President Obama was elected at a time when many Black Americans are in the process of going backwards and losing what took 40-50 years to accomplish.

I am proud of President Obama and he is fighting hard to do what he can to help ALL Americans, the upper class, the poor, the Middle Class, the struggling, the disadvantaged, the disenfranchised and the marginalized.

President Obama has the dubious distinction of being elected, at a time when this country is on the verge of what is being called a "recession", but is quickly turning into a DEPRESSION, and I am glad he is at the wheel even as the ship is sinking.

It is hard for me to see many of the economic gains of the past 40 years being wiped out.

Of course, many Americans of all races are suffering, but it just seems to be hitting Black Americans twice as hard as everyone else.

Thanks!

So who remembers Reagan's pet shitlump, Lee Atwater? Yiu know, the Gooptards' chief political strategist before Rove?
""Atwater: You start out in 1954 by saying, "Nigger, nigger, nigger." By 1968 you can't say "nigger" — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me — because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than "Nigger, nigger." "

Thanks HK for giving us something to think of.
Whether the heart of the Republican platform is racist or not, the heart of the platform sure as hell doesn't care about: the poor, the unemployed, the elderly, the disabled, the marginalized, the disadvantaged, the disenfranchised and anyone else struggling these days!

DomImus -> RE: Most of Black Middle Class economic gains being wiped out (7/12/2011 5:57:24 AM)

I read an article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about seven or eight years ago. I don't have a link. I read this in the ink and newsprint version. The AJC prepared several hundred fake resumés. The work experience, education and overall qualifications across them were generally equal. The pool of resumés was split in half. One half was assigned names like Mark and Mary and Steven. The other half was assigned names like LaKeisha and Quantavius and DeMarcus. Then the resumés were sent out in response to actual job openings. As I recall the response rate for the Mark and Mary group was 2-3 times as high as the response rate for the LaKeisha and Quantavius group although the "applicants" were essentially equal. This was nothing but paper. No real meetings face to face.

I have no expectation of any significant improvement occurring in the relationship between the different races in my lifetime. The first step and most important ingredient in improved race relations is an honest and open dialog where both sides can air their thoughts and ideas and grievances without reprisal or rhetoric. That will never happen. It hasn't even happened in this thread. Too many people have a chip on their shoulder or an axe to grind. Even the OP was written in a somewhat combative tone. I don't see things changing any time soon until people can check their volatility at the door.

Thank you for posting DI!
I enjoyed reading your post so much, I read it a few times.
I have heard of similar "experiments/studies" in which people with certain types of names are less likely to be called back on an interview.
hummmm

I even appreciate you saying I wrote my OP with a "combative tone".
[;)]
It is often hard to make a point without coming off too soft or too hard, I did not mean to sound "combative" at all.
In fact, I make it a point to not engage in most of the threads on this board, that deal with issues of race or racism, because it is almost always futile at best.

I get a little frustrated/annoyed when people imply that racism isn't a big factor anymore, and that "everything is equal, and everyone has an equal opportunity in America".

For many people to admit that Black people OFTEN still do not have the same opportunities in life, would just fuck up their entire points of view!

Not a whole lot of folks posting on this thread, are they?
The fact that many here don't have much to say about this particular phenomenon, speaks volumes, but I will continue to post similar threads from time to time.
"just because"
[;)]

I love this country, and I would not want to have been born anywhere else in the world, but we both know race is often a factor, racism still very much exists, the playing field is not equal {a lot of the time}, and more often that many would like to admit, many people will not have "equal opportunities", simply because of the color of their skin.

If MANY Black people are STILL very much affected and dealing with racism, when it comes to getting employment and housing, the fact that we have elected a Black President doesn't change their situation at all!
Do you think the employers that selected White felons over Black non-felons, have changed their minds/ways because Barack Obama was elected President?

[8|]
I also would love to see an "open and honest" dialogue where not just "both" sides but people of all races could exchange idea's, pre-conceived notions, and grievances wwithout reprisals or rhetoric.
I would love to see this happen in a live open and moderated forum, in an on-going series of exchanges, because realistically, the forum would need to continue for years, to be of real value!

Thanks again for posting!
Peace

Mari, I was going to behave myself, right up until I saw this.

There is racism in what got us to a place with numbers like this, but it is just as much the democrat/liberal variety that assumes "those poor things" just aren't good enough to make it on their own, as there is the, "I hate them damn darkies" ignorance. The contemptuous pity of the bleeding heart left, and the damage it has done, needs to be recognized, as well.

Rich, I like it when you misbehave, because you are such a gentlemen.
[;)]
I don't see anything in this OP that hints at "Black people not making it".

I didn't write the article, or make up what is going on, a lot of the gains made by the Black Middle Class is being "wiped out" at a much faster rate than other groups of people in America.

These are the facts, Rich.
I would rather you pick something from the article that you don't agree with and be specific.
Like the study in which White felons were picked over Black non-felons for employment.

I think its sad when given facts, that you might imply these facts are not true, or do what about 80% tend to do on here, and that is change the topic.

Thanks in advance, Rich.

That I don't agree with, huh? Are you sure? I was kinda digging on the quotes from Cornell West.

I'm just responding to the old play of making racism a one dimensional, partisan thing.

If you read through the thread I didn't start the partisan bullshit Rich, HK did.
I just agreed with him, so that makes me guilty as charged.

Professor Cornel West is a very lively, and interesting scholar to say the least!!
Rich? chatting about CORNEL WEST? Rich, you are a closet Moderate!

Power to the People!

As this country is sinking faster than the Titanic, people on both sides of the aisle, will have to work together to make America the great country it could and can be again.
