If you rate people on the positive effect they have on the lives of others (and I do) then she's right up there.

Extraordinary determination too. The early stages of the setting up of the BFC (as just one example) were subject to a great deal of scrutiny and criticism at the time.

May she rest easy.

She also publicly faced breast cancer and courageously faced double mastectomy at a time when women felt shame about losing their breasts due to breast cancer. She advocated for early detection way before all those pink ribbons we see today.

She was a feminist, pro choice, etc etc etc...

Indeed - I was always impressed by her attitudes to women's rights and subjects, before her BFC days, and she bore her illness, as you say, with great class.

An all-round excellent human being, and example to us all as to how to overcome personal weaknesses and move on to something better.

Her husband totally fucked up on the Warren Commission... But BETTY... Well we can only guess how many women's lives she saved. She really could be considered the first major champion of the breast cancer cause. And how many people on EITHER side of the gender fence did her candidness and dedication to those suffering addictions did she make it less stigmatic to seek help?

We'll miss ya Betty!

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: RIP Betty Ford (7/8/2011 7:01:32 PM)

She was an amazing person. She did so much in so many areas. I always wished that I could sit with her for an afternoon of conversation. She lived a very long & fulfilling life. Good for you, Betty!!!!

pahunkboy -> RE: RIP Betty Ford (7/8/2011 7:15:28 PM)

I cant beleive how long she did live- as she had drug-drink issues.

So? If you get "the good stuff", and I would presume she did, then a period of addiction is not necessarily a death sentence, or even particularly dangerous. If you're taking pure or mostly pure cocaine, as just one example, you could be on that for a while before any serious physical effects were felt, depending on your intake. The same applies to alcohol. If you're drinking fine brandies or malt whisky, then assuming you hydrate you should be fine, until the point your liver cries "enough".

It's street-level drugs cut with crap, and cheap booze derived from poor sources, that do the damage swiftly. The rest takes longer, and she sorted herself out before it killed her early.

PeonForHer -> RE: RIP Betty Ford (7/9/2011 4:02:23 AM)

Hell, did she have true grit - so many achievements.

LadyPact -> RE: RIP Betty Ford (7/9/2011 7:51:48 AM)

My sincere condolences to her family who must be grieving terribly.

Definitely a woman who made her mark on the world.  Rest in peace.

[:(] Just read this here..Missed it for some reason. May she rest in peace. She brought light on the subject of addiction in the middle class. She is with her love of 58 years now, and love it was for the both of them.

slvemike4u -> RE: RIP Betty Ford (7/9/2011 7:48:24 PM)

Rest in peace.....she was a class act all the way...and willing to espouse what ,at the time, were not popular positions.

I love how she planned her funeral to be bipartisan and charged Cokie Roberts with admonishing us all to work together without acrimony.
