(Photo: U.S. Embassy) (CNSNews.com) – Public protests by Pakistani Islamists happen frequently, but on Monday the target was a new one – the recent hosting by the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad of its first-ever lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) “pride celebration.” In recent months, protests on Pakistani streets have covered issues including alleged “blasphemy” against Islam, the arrest of a CIA contractor who shot dead two Pakistanis, the Osama bin Laden raid, and the continuing controversy over drone-launched missile strikes along the Afghan-Pakistan border. The June 26 event at the U.S. Embassy provided a new theme for Islamists looking for a reason to chant anti-U.S. slogans, threaten jihad, and burn American flags on the Fourth of July. On that day, Richard Hoagland, the number two diplomat at the mission, co-hosted a meeting with Gays and Lesbians in Foreign Affairs Agencies, an organization that represents gays and lesbians at the State Department, USAID and other agencies.

Maybe there wasn't anywhere else in Islamabad they could safely stage a GLBT event? Putting it on in a mosque might have been amusing, but only until the stonings started...

It was a stupid thing to do. There is no reason why an embassy should be getting involved in local issues that way, that's not the function of an embassy.

I completely agree...let them protest. Who cares? There are Christian groups that protest Pride in American cities. Sure they're not threatening crusades (is that the Christian version of Jihad? No clue.) but aside from inciting people to violence there's absolutely nothing wrong with protesting, even if it's something we consider unpopular.

I agree, but there is much truth in the saying; when in Rome do as the Romans do, or at least stand neutral, as anything other could be seen as confrontational. Further to that, an embassy is a place of work, what right do workers have to upset the policy and celebrate something than has sod all to do with embassy duties and likely to piss off the host country.

But as administrations change via the polls, do the civil servants change with them ?

I totally disagree with that whole frigging concept, no matter where a foreign embassy is, the embassy staff should be mindful of the country that they are in, as the embassy before it was built was the foreign country and if embassy staff are not considerate of the host country, the land could very well become the host county's once more.

Remember embassy staff overseas are the day to day public representatives of a nation who cannot speak as they can, so they at least should be the whitest of white in terms of their public position. Or else wouldn't it be a sincere shame if a bunch of inconsiderate dumb fucks screw up diplomatic ties between two countries and mar the public image of the home country to the people in the street.

As to the LGBT cause, certain countries are perhaps not ready for acceptance yet, so it does no good to rub delicate issues in their faces, as that might very well put back any progress that has been made, and could even cause witch hunts were there was none before.

You know...one thing I want to add...we didn't get attacked on 9/11 because of our way of life.

They don't hate us because homosexuality is legal. They don't hate us because we let women work and choose when to have children. They don't hate us because alcohol is legal in our country.

I mean sure, they disapprove of all that, and would change it...but that's not why they hate America. They hate America because they see us as meddling with their own countries, they see us as selfish, dishonest, manipulative, cutthroat, and meddling.

Of course conservative Muslims would still rail on about the west and its sins and excesses if we stopped doing that, but I don't think that young men would be willing to die to fight the fact that gay bars (omg double sin!) are legal in the US. So this idea that...oh no homosexuality will set off the terrorists...it's bullshit.

The terrorists don't give a fuck about somewhere like, Liechtenstein...where there are just as many gays and just as many bars and just as many uncovered women. Because Liechtenstein stays the fuck out of their business and doesn't try to dictate the way the entire world should be run.

Why the absolute silence on what is clearly the most important and urgent issue here? Lots of irrelevant tosh about the venue, the protests etc but a glaring silence on the critical all-consuming central issue.

Where's the gossip on what the party goers wore? No account of a party is complete without a fashion analysis.
