tazzygirl -> Turkey and Libya (7/4/2011 10:06:05 PM)

It was reported today that Turkey is now funding the rebels in Libya and is funding them 300 million.

http://news.yahoo.com/turkey-recognizes-libya-rebels-gives-300-million-174140388.html

quote:

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu visited the rebel stronghold of Benghazi in eastern Libya on Sunday. He says his country has given the rebels' Transitional National Council $300 million, two-thirds as a loan and one-third as a grant.

Im not strong on alot of international issues.

Thoughts?

Aneirin -> RE: Turkey and Libya (7/5/2011 7:03:27 AM)

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) — Turkey's foreign minister says his country recognizes the leadership of the Libyan rebels as the sole legitimate representatives of the country.

Good, but it could be more to do with the fact that they wish to continue trading with Libya, once Gadaffi has been ousted, and could also signify a growing belief in the Muslim world that Gadaffi is finished, which then could lead to other such uprisings, where people are not happy with the rulers, the Arab Spring.

But of the Arab spring, will it only be Arab, or is this desire for change infectious, meaning, will it spread to other countries, non Arab countries even ?

I wonder if that question has grazed in the minds of our leaders in the West, as one thing is for sure, public feeling towards the role of government and it's actions is becoming more vocal.

But is this desire for change symptomic of the Internet? For surely uninhibited communication between commoners the world over, is causing a change of ideas and it is for this reason existing regimes wish to control what their subjects access, China being a case known, and in some respects pertaining to religion and morality laws, the Muslim world.

Long live the internet !

This is good news, for the good guys anyway.

If Turkey(our closest Muslim nation ally in the ME)were to say,cut ties with us and instead gave gobs of money to moammar, the righties would be allllll over it.

Wouldn`t they?Like Pavlov`s dogs.

But this development is willfully ignored.....

It`s that cult-like, selective reality thing again with cons.[:D]

tazzygirl -> RE: Turkey and Libya (7/6/2011 9:03:25 AM)

lol.... i really need to wake up before posting.

Owner, I dont think this is about left vs right wing politics.

Nor would it matter much if it were.

I am curious as to how some would view this long the lines of international politics, what is his chances of remaining in power, and the ability of the rebels to utilize this chance for the good of the country.

Yet you seem to feel that every issue must be framed in the context of left/right as seen in the US. This is also cult-like behaviour if you ask me.

As to the Turks in Libya, I think its a good thing. I'm not up on all the nuances of the Libyan situation, but I tend to throw my support behind those trying to get out from under a tyrant. I don't really care what their politics are beyond that.

i know, right? =p
not everything is about the American right and left.

anyway, i'm going to do some more reading about this.

Owner59 -> RE: Turkey and Libya (7/6/2011 9:15:01 AM)

One can be partisan and correct at the same time.

This forum has the word, Politics, in it.

And true, not everything is left or right.

This is.How many support Libya threads have been started here by our clutch of cons?

I make no apologies for being partisan.

It doesn`t bother me when others are.

It`s the cheating by lying to get ahead, that burns me and most Americans.

One should be able to make points on their merits without resorting to cheating.

The cult comments are mostly tongue and cheek.

Mostly [8D]

Hillwilliam -> RE: Turkey and Libya (7/6/2011 9:20:08 AM)

I'm glad someone is stepping up and doing it besides us.

Tired of our leaders deciding we need to be the world's police force and I have to pay for it.

tazzygirl -> RE: Turkey and Libya (7/6/2011 9:22:34 AM)

Is Turkey doing it because its right, doing it because of fear, or doing it because they are simply mad at Gadaffi?

Owner59 -> RE: Turkey and Libya (7/6/2011 9:24:54 AM)

I did say it was good news, for the good guys.

I guess all folks of good will and political persuasions can agree with that.

Right,rich?[:D]

BamaD -> RE: Turkey and Libya (7/6/2011 9:28:31 AM)

So now we will get people in charge of Libya who hate us as much as Ghadaffi and aren't as afraid of us, what how wonderful.

They were close allies for many many years.

It didn`t come to this over night or superfluously.

I don`t think they are in fear of anything gaddaffi might do.

See,here`s that lying thing again.....

As well as bad grammar.....[8D]

BamaD -> RE: Turkey and Libya (7/6/2011 9:37:22 AM)

Wrong  they do hate us, they don't fear us and that was bad typing, not bad grammar.

Because it's in their own self-interest to do so. they are betting on the rebels winning. They hope, that because they were generous backers they will gain various benefits, such as:

1. Access to Libyan oil.
2. An ally in the Mediterranean
3. Another democratic Muslim state in the area
4. Goodwill from other NATO & EU members
5. Greater acceptance as a responsible member of the international community
6. A bunch of other things I haven't thought of

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: Turkey and Libya (7/6/2011 9:53:00 AM)

Wrong they do hate us,
Who hates you? The Libyan rebels? the Turks? Or both?

mnottertail -> RE: Turkey and Libya (7/6/2011 9:54:46 AM)

And thats what is confounding about the armchair relativistic political theorists.

When we act in our own (percieved) self-interests, we are the keepers of freedom.

Should any other country act in their own (percieved) self-interests, they are muslim brotherhoods, and commies and terrorists and world defilers.

It would seem to me that at some point somebody amongst these chaps would wise up, but they dont.

All those Arab`y folks over 'thar'.

And then in the trees I heard a twig snap
Warning lights flashed on my map
I opened my eyes and to my surprise...

There were Arabs with Knives
At the foot of the bed!
Right at the foot of the bed!
Oh my God how did they get in here?
I thought we were safe home in England
