I don't know how anyone can sing that song. I like it and I say keep it. The anti religon left would have a bird if they sang God Bless America before every sporting event.

So all of July will be about the 4th,  we get a break in August- then ALL of September will celebrate 9-11,  it will die off a few weeks- until Veterans day.

Another thread here reminded me of the simmering contriversy about our national anthem.
There have been folks who say it should be changed for a couple of reasons.
1. It's damn hard to sing. The melody is allegedly from an old British drinking song. It's made for Brit drunks, not sober Americans.

2. This country is about more than a flag and a war. Resources, Natural Beauty, Productivity, Strength
What say you folks?

Keep it. It reminds us of how we got started.
Besisides... "America The Beautiful" Sounds Douchie

And There ARE Americans That Can Sing It ... and WELL

Yay! I'm guessing  from your reaction that I got it more or less right?

O! say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
’Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation.
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust;”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave

When our land is illumined with liberty's smile,
If a foe from within strikes a blow at her glory,
Down, down with the traitor that tries to defile
The flag of the stars, and the page of her story!
By the millions unchained,
Who their birthright have gained
We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained;
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave,
While the land of the free is the home of the brave.

pahunkboy -> RE: Should the National Anthem be changed? (7/4/2011 4:41:34 PM)

O beautiful for spacious skies,For amber waves of grain,For purple mountain majestiesAbove the fruited plain!

America! America!God shed His grace on thee,And crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feetWhose stern impassion'd stressA thoroughfare for freedom beatAcross the wilderness.

America! America!
God mend thine ev'ry flaw,Confirm thy soul in self-control,Thy liberty in law.

O beautiful for heroes prov'dIn liberating strife,Who more than self their country lov'd,And mercy more than life

. America! America!May God thy gold refineTill all success be nobleness,And ev'ry gain divine. O beautiful for patriot dreamThat sees beyond the yearsThine alabaster cities gleamUndimmed by human tears.

America! America!God shed His grace on thee,And crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining sea.

I don't think we need to change the anthem, but I always wondered about it.... It is hard to sing, but so what, few of us will be getting up in front of a stadium of people and singing it solo. My issue with the piece is that, heck, it's a WALTZ. It induces pride, yes, but in a sappy, introspective manner.  Look at something like Le Marseillaise, it's a rallying point, a jump-in-sing-it- loud-and-bang-your-fist-on-the-table expression of pride. Style-wise it fits the idea of anthem... it's a fanfare.  Granted, we are socialized into believing the anthem of the country we live in is the pinnacle of patriotic expression; however, musically speaking, "The Star Spangled Banner" is a bit tame as a rallying point.

(Disclaimer, the statement above in no way makes a judgement concerning the types of governments of the countries mentioned therein.)

Yes, very rousing, but A. it is celebrating your military history and with that actions away from America's borders, so what hope ever of quelling the wars that America and it's rimmers seem to have a habit waging not in their own lands ?

But THIS is the only anthem that moves me, the unofficial English Anthem.

And such inspiring words that speeks of people and country not war;

Marc2b -> RE: Should the National Anthem be changed? (7/5/2011 6:42:30 AM)

Keep it.

It is not, as many assert, celebrating war. It is not about battle or flags or any of that. That is just what it appears to be on the surface. What the song is really about is standing firm in the face of adversity.

GreedyTop -> RE: Should the National Anthem be changed? (7/5/2011 8:42:33 AM)

A.. it isnt "celebrating" the military history.. if it was, it would have inlcuded more than just GREAT film and photography of the USAF..
it would have included shots also of the USMC, USArmy, USN, USCG.

I posted it because the photography was awesome, and because I think the anthem should damned well be left alone.  Even that pesky last verse that includes the word god.. LOL

GreedyTop -> RE: Should the National Anthem be changed? (7/5/2011 8:43:42 AM)

I agree with Marc.. who said it better than I could have ever dreamt of doing, myself...
