Sanity -> RE: Indiana college says no to national anthem (7/4/2011 8:28:44 AM)

In the context of describing a news report "extremely balanced" means that it fairly  presents all sides

And if describing a breakthrough in home solar energy the NPR headline and article body would give full credit to the great Obama and hail him as savior of the universe throughout

How can anything be "extremely" balanced...balance is a condition of moderating extremes.

On the song issue...I'm in the "who gives a fuck" camp too.

And this time...FOX is just reporting the news, folks.

Yes, you can make an issue of deciding this was news. That's not surprising given FOX's demographic. Hey, if there's a break-through in home solar energy, it's more likely to run on NPR than FOX. It's how things work, and it doesn't spell bias at every turn.

They have the right...it is what I fought for...now I will exercise my right...Shame on you Goshen College...You don't have to fight but you should honor the people who fight for you.

You know someone pissed in MMs coffee when he resorts to semantic bullshit like this.

And it was newsworthy enough to post here. I guess the OP is in Fox's demographic too. <cough cough>

This was my thought on it when I saw it reported.... it was in a few Christian papers to start with, Fox was the only large media outfit that ran with it.. it really is a non-story and in the "who cares" file. The reason I posted it is that it does speak to the knee jerk flag wavers that Fox caters to.

Sigh.

Language is what I do. It stands out.

I also defended Fox in this instance....and yet you see urine in Cheerios.

Don't take too much aspirin with your coffee...causes stomach bleeding.

Unless I misread the article, they weren't banning the celebration or dishonoring those that fought for them. They aren't even banning students from singing the song, themselves. They're declining to make the singing of the national anthem an official act because it disagrees with their religious views.

Two quotes from the article that you may have missed...

""The words of the anthem. You know, ‘Bombs bursting in air,’ the words are part of a larger argument being made as to why not to play it. Our intent is never to disrespect or dishonor not only our country or those who have died for these principals but to actually honor these principals," Brenneman said."

"Goshen’s administration says the college will come up with alternative ways to honor the country while staying true to its faith."

They've made the personal choice for themselves that their faith has to come before the accepted methods of showing patriotism. Personally, I'm all for that. They've actually put thought into what's important for them and why. That puts them head and shoulders above the schools that I've been involved with.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Indiana college says no to national anthem (7/4/2011 8:59:56 AM)

To those who say that they shouldn't get any federal funding because they don't open games with the anthem.

Way to go.  You just shit on the constitutional right of free speech and separation of church and state with one post.

Who are you to decide what the news is

Oh thats right, youre a far left ideologue, you believe you were born with the divine right to dictate such things to everyone else

And you failed to give any credible citation that established that it  really was a FOX NEWS story in the way that you claimed.

Who on FOX NEWS said the things attributed to him or her, where is the story and how does the context go

Silly me, that doesnt matter, the only thing that matters is destroying any and all speech thats truthful

AKA oppositional to far left extremists and ideologues

If there WERE a separation of church and state you would still have it totally backwards. Giving them money would violate it, not eliminating it. "free speech" is a red herring. Nobody is forcing someone to sing the NA or even listen to it when its played. NOT playing it violates the rights of those who want to continue long standing traditions.

tazzygirl -> RE: Indiana college says no to national anthem (7/4/2011 9:39:45 AM)

I thought when a student takes out a loan, applies for a scholarship, or receives a grant, its for the student based upon them being eligible for that money.

Musicmystery -> RE: Indiana college says no to national anthem (7/4/2011 9:42:16 AM)

Incidentally, I agree with willbeur on this one.

Giving them money, even indirectly, through scholarship programs, does violate separation of church and state. Conservatives are quick to make this point about the slightest trickle of indirect abortion funding (though in a backwards way, but we'll leave that discussion for another thread).

If there's a demand for faith-based institutions, then people of faith will support them. Wasn't that Newt's position on charity? That without government funding, people would give more? [He was demonstrated wrong, but the point remains.]

I disagree with him on supporting education at all, but that's a different topic.

Then stand there and sing it proudly.  They won't kick ya out.

Over the din of the crowd. Yeah, great solution. [8|]

If they provided 2 minutes of silence there might be some freedom of speech basis for your solution.

What is more important wilbur?  Your relation to your God and your Country or the public spectacle?

If you want everyone to know you're singing the anthem, get a megafone.  You know you love your country.  Do you feel the urge to make everyone else know it?

We all need to sing a battle songs to show our patriotism.

There there are other ways to be patriotic besides glorifying war

When and how was he demonstrated wrong?

1) Funding was cut.
2) Donations didn't magically replace the cuts.

When? You remember the 90s?
