I've been aware of this situation for years, which is why I will not consume any product with cocoa unless I know the source of that cocoa. Most of the time that ends up being fair trade chocolate.

Last year I posted about this topic to FetLife under a chocolate fetishist's thread. The post was pulled. Obviously people would rather stick their head in the sand than acknowledge that their consumption of an item that is purely for luxury and never a necessity could come from a source that uses forced child slave labour.

Status: offline 		i have never fucking heard of any of the fair trade companies they list in the article. i try buying only cadbury stuff because i heard they were fair trade, but i admit i never actually did any fucking research into it. i haven't bought any fucking hershey stuff in ages, to the best of my knowledge, but i don't fucking know what other name brands hershey owns.

in the final analysis my contribution is fucking small beer, i don't buy a fuck of a lot of chocolate.

Status: offline 		Not trying to question that fairtrade is a fine thing, and well worth the bit extra the stuff with ethically sourced cocoa tends to cost, but I do wonder if it's not a bit hypocritical of companies to be making a song and dance about where they source their cocoa from when they're using sugar that's pretty close to being produced by slave labour in the same choccies. Some of the stuff Tate & Lyall (to pick an obvious example) get up to is every bit as disgusting as the stuff some cocoa farmers and refiners get up to, and nobody seems to give a shit about that.

Fortunately for me, both sugar and cocoa are produced in Hawai`i. :) I know sugar is nowhere near the volume it has been in the past, but I know, without having to research it, that there is one sugar cane factory still in production in Hawai`i. I used to drive past it anytime I went into town to shop.

There are a lot of fair trade labels out there. Do you know which one accepts 10%?

The first one doesn't say "how" the particular coffee was labelled.

After skimming the second one, I didn't see anything negative about fair trade, although again, no particular label was mentioned.

The last two mention coffee only. I don't drink coffee, so I guess that's a relief. ;) But I didn't see what particular labels they were referring to either.

However, with all that said, the main focus of my original post was not about fair trade but to spotlight the horrendous way cocoa is obtained in one area of the world where almost half of the world's cocoa is obtained. I don't think most people realize what happens.

Here is a pretty good chocolate maker. :) http://www.dagobachocolate.com/index.asp Sometimes their dark chocolate appeals to me, other times it doesn't. But overall fairly tasty.

Status: offline 		Well, I was less concerned with labels, and as I said, feel free to google about fair trade, I don't eat chocolates, hate the stuff, tastes foul to me, I'm more concerned with the mislabeling of "fair trade" when it often is everything but.

I this week have quit eating chocolate and chips (them thin baked slivers), as I am rather convinced that they are very bad for my health.
