I am in no way judging here, I'm simply trying to get a new perspective on this subject. I've seen many people who are into Pet Play, but what I don't get is the submissives that play the role of a kitty. Main reason being, I have had kitties (real ones..the actual animals. :-P) and they do not at all strike me as submissive animals. Puppies, I get. Ponies even, I get. Those two animals like any other are born wild, but you can stick a leash on them and give them a whip or a swat on the nose and sooner or later they are submissive. Kitties on the other hand, not so much. They seem to be very independent creatures and not at all willing to just do what you say when you say it. Go ahead and try swatting at a cat, unlike most dogs, that cat is probably going to leave you with a few thousand cuts on your hands and face. Why do submissives play the role of an animal that is not at all submissive?

I do when I'm in a playful & cuddly mood. Not bratty or willful, just when I'm very happy and want to nuzzle & cuddle and get some ear scritches, back and neck pets. I also like curling up at his feet or in his lap. I guess it helps that the one I'm with loves pets and understands cats.

kitties are cute, that's why. Actually, I prefer the "cat" type personality in my pets. Submissive, in the fact that yes, they are my pet. Yet at the same time, still independent. Lovable and cuddly, yet slightly aloof. But they know who they come home to, who cares for them, and who they need to please.

The cat I have at the moment is an indoor/outdoor cat. Extremely loving but has its moments where he just wants to be left alone, so I let him outside and he can be gone for hours, but ALWAYS comes back because he knows I'm the one taking care of him. Actually come to think of it, I think if there was any animal I identify with..it would be the cat.

It's off shoot of the whole Japanese Neko Girl thing in anime which is getting increasingly popular here in America. It's actually surprising how often I run into college girls wearing a headband with cat ears on it.

Precisely. Independent, but still (stereotypically speaking) craving attention, wanting to be spoiled, enjoying their alone time, but will still come when called in the proper manner. Knowing that misbehaving will get them in trouble, and although very aloof, still understanding and adhering to strict protocols in every little thing and knowing full well of where they and everyone else sits in their hierarchy, whether others understand or even notice those protocols and hierarchies.

For us, it no doubt has to do with both of us liking Japanese animation in our childhood (meh, in our adulthood too, really :P). Cat girls, or Nekos, are fairly common, and while sometimes having cat characteristics, they tend to be much different in personality than a house cat. These characters are often shy, soft spoken, and super happy. As well, they tend to be naive and cling to other characters (frequently a love interest) for guidance and support. Since we were already exposed to such fantasies, and the roles tended to closely mirror our own interactions with each other, it just sorta fell into place as part of our D/s relationship. I would say, as a whole, a good percentage of kitty-play participants are influenced by similar things. I often visit kittenplay.net, and see lots of anime pictures, geeky girls and guys, and personalities that seem to closely resemble the anime cat girls.

On another note, I looked at your profile earlier and you make the most adorable kitty!! Most of this stuff isn't a 1 to 1 analogy of real life. People want to be kittens for a host of reasons, sometimes quite polar opposites. Who at times wouldn't want to be that carefree cat basking in the warm sun, having daddy gently pick you up, set you down in his lap and stroke your hair, giving you all his undivided attention knowing that, as a cat, you can soak it all up guilt free with no responsiblity? Or maybe if you purr loud enough and rub up against daddy, he will give you a bowl of special cream to lap up.

Because not everyone sees cats as not submissive. They understand animal behaviors and mannerisms Better. My cat is extremely submissive to everyone who enters her life who has a dominant personality that fits with her. She will jump through hoops come when called by name, pander beg and do everything dog can be trained to do. Im not Just a Kitten Im a specific type, Its my namesake its a great part of who I am as a submissive and as a Furrie. Im a Toyger because while im very loving and playful house-cat I do have aggressive actions to those i view as a threat to my environment. Most cats are "not submissive" because they feel you are a threat to their lives in some way, It isnt until you get to know that cat and they see where you fit in their world view that they either mellow or dont. If your constantly a threat to their dynamic they will fuck you up. But if your not they are likely to not attack. Thats me. I will be on guard with ANYONE who enters my life until I see how they interact in my life.

This, and, it's incredibly cute. For me, it's about being the centre of attention, putting on a performance and being petted and watched and really enjoying making people react positively, seeing them smile. I see petplay as bottom-y because for me it's also about depersonalisation and removal of another layer of power because of the lack of things like speech. I don't know whether it's the specific animal chosen, be they cat or dog or rabbit or cow, or the rest of the mindset that goes into it?
