Fightdirecto -> Is it really worth it when your political party gave up the fight? (6/23/2011 11:31:09 PM)

I live in Massachusetts and, if you have been reading the news, you probably know that the former Speaker of the House in our State Legislature just got convicted on corruption charges - making him the third Speaker in a row convicted of some form of corruption while in office.

Out of curiousity, I did some Internet research and found that he was elected to the state legislature from his district in 1979 and served for 30 years. In over 3/4 of his re-election bids, he ran unopposed, except for primary challenges from members of his own political party.

If a politician can run successfully for office repeatedly over a 30 year period because the opposing party lets him run unopposed - whose fault is it? The party that keeps nominating him, the voters who vote for him because he is the only one running for the office on the ballot, or the opposing party that gives up and never runs anyone against him?

If you actually vote in the Commonwealth, you might known that in town ballots, there are sometimes scores of people running for local office unopposed. The voter is free to either A) Vote for the assigned name, B) Write-In a Name, C) Leave that part blank and move on. That seems to work at the state level as well. Since every once in a while, someone at the state level has run unopposed. Whose fault is that? Nobody's. That's the brilliance of a democracy! No one has to run, just because someone else is running from a different political party. The Commonwealth is quite known for its progressive, liberal, and Democratic viewpoint on a host of issues. But we 'Massholes' have been known to vote a Republican in to office on occasion...

Love or hate the state, the Republicans are blamed by those who might vote Republican, if they dont run an candidate. If you dont like that Republicans aren't running in the state, no one is forcing you NOT to write yourself in, and run for office. Just make sure you fill out the correct forms ahead of time.

Its Freedom of Speech to re-elect someone for the 11th time. If a incumbent seems to be doing the things you want goverment to do or not do, why should you be limited and/or forced to vote for someone else? Even the 'Kingpin' of 'Term Limits', Rep. Ron Paul is for just two terms (to start after his what....14th term in office?).

Unfortunately, some states/districts are SO Red or Blue that it is considered a waste of time to run if you don't belong to the "Correct Party" .

These are people who put their brains on autopilot and go into the voting booth looking for that coveted (D) or (R) after the candidate's name.

As far as I'm concerned, they're stupid and get what they deserve.

The area where I live is a perfect example. We just elected our first state legislator that wasn't an (R) in over 100 years (a Right leaning Independent). The ONLY reason that happened was that:

A. The R challenger was an absolute dumbass

and

B. The guy (incumbent) had been initially elected as a Republican but was kicked out of the party for voting against the wishes of the state party chairman. (I bet you folks didn't know that could happen).
