I'd like to say I am shocked but...
Same thing happened up here in the Boston area when the cops found out they were being phone videoed while they beat the shit out of some kid on the campus of Roxbury community college ...

http://youtu.be/v8qs6qxmqk4

I love how they kinda parody the Law & Order theme music for a bit
The BPD made very public announcements that it was now illegal to 'record' police officers... WTF they gonna do COPS come to town?

...locally-  they consider the audio to be against state wire tap laws, where as video with no sound is allowed.

This came up when one neighbor was recording the next door neighbor and the cops got into the feud.   The video did catch wrong doing- how ever-  the person got a fine- due to the audio.  both of them got cited if I recall.

~FR~

This is surprising to anyone?

So what is your point? That you've been laying down for it longer than most?
This isn't something that's been 'eternal' in the northeast. And maybe people from my neck of the woods don't want it to become endemic.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Police State. (6/22/2011 7:40:18 PM)

My point is that this has been going on for as long as there has been LEO's. BTW, yeah it has been going on for a long time in the NE as well. Just because some people are becoming conscious to the fact, does not mean it just started. Police abuse authority often, sometimes because they are actually told and trained that they are in the right, and sometimes for other reasons. The abuse their authority on and off duty. Not all do of course, but a substantial amount to cause some of the problems there are.

So are you really surprised by what happened? If so, then hopefully your naive misconceptions are now cured.

I am NOT talking about simple abuse of authority... fuck man, my cat knows about that. What I am and the OP are SPECIFICALLY addressing is the practice of arresting bystanders on the basis of their bearing 'electronic witness' if you will to executing various practices. Sure, the video I submitted may have led you off topic. But the point of this thread is in regard to police beginning to attack citizens for use of a  technology that's been around for a while.

tazzygirl -> RE: Police State. (6/22/2011 10:41:29 PM)

Did no one read the article attached to the video? The cops didnt exactly get away with anything.

lickenforyou -> RE: Police State. (6/22/2011 11:36:39 PM)

I expected to see cops acting totally out of line, but I don't see this as so cut and dry. I don't know what she said before she turned the camera on. The fact that she said anything at all is suspect to me. It's dark out and seemingly safe situations can turn ugly. Would they have asked her to go inside if she hadn't said whatever she said? We'll never know.

Termyn8or -> RE: Police State. (6/22/2011 11:37:01 PM)

They put an innocent person in jail.

But I guess that doesn't count. You don't want to know what would happen if that was out front of my house. But you would, it would be front page news. Don't fuck with people who have lost the sense of fear.

T^T

Termyn8or -> RE: Police State. (6/22/2011 11:41:15 PM)

"I don't know what she said before she turned the camera on."

That also crossed my mind. How did they even know she was there and had a camera ? She was probably stupid.

But then that excuses nothing. They can take video of you anywhere in public, but you can't take video of them ? Just fucking wait until someone tells me I have some terminal disease. Maybe even before that.

Part of the conversation on the tape was the cop asking her to repeat what she had said before she started taping. She didn't repeat it she just asked what she had said that offended him. So, that is a bit different than her just standing there taping. Which I was expecting to see. Believe me I know and have experienced police misconduct but I'm not sure that this is.

Innocent yet you are saying she did something in your next post.

All I meant is that the cop's report didnt match what was on the video and IA is investigating.

Thats not what he said... actually, after listening again, he did eventually say that. I have to wonder why three cops, all male, would feel "unsafe" with a woman video tapoing them. The whole thing reeks.

May 12 2011 - A Rochester woman was arrested for taping a traffic stop in front of her 19th Ward Home. She was standing in front of her house with a hand held recording device when the arrest happened. Officer Mario Masic, Rochester Police Department, executed the illegal arrest.

NEW YORK -- In May, the Rochester Police Department arrested a woman on a charge of obstructing governmental administration after she videotaped several officers' search of a man's car. The charge is a criminal misdemeanor.

The only problem? Videotaping a police officer in public view is perfectly legal in New York state -- and the woman was in her own front yard. The arrest report of the incident also contains an apparent discrepancy from what is seen in the woman's own video.

That video, uploaded to the Internet this week, more than a month after Emily Good's May 12 arrest, begins by showing a black male being questioned by a police officer at about 10 p.m. The red and blue flashes of a police cruiser illuminate the scene on Aldine Street.

"I just got out of the house, man, I'm sick, man," the man who has been pulled over says. Other police officers search his car.

Then one of the officers, identified as Mario Masic in the arrest report, turns to the camera and asks, "You guys need something?"

"I'm just -- this is my front yard -- I'm just recording what you're doing. It's my right," Good replies.

"Actually, not from the sidewalk," the officer replies, incorrect about the legality of Good's actions.

For more than a minute of the video, the officer and Good argue about whether she is threatening his safety. Finally, it appears, Masic has had enough: "You know what, you're gonna go to jail. That's just not right."

Acuff claimed that he and Good were complying with the policeman's order to return to their porch when she was arrested.

"The real reason they arrested her was because she was videotaping," Acuff said. Both he and Good are activists who have previously protested foreclosures in the area.

Acuff has posted his own account of the arrest on Indymedia. He said he and Good were videotaping the traffic stop out of concern about police misconduct.

The police report of the arrest contains another apparent discrepancy from what appears on the video: Masic writes that the traffic stop targeted three individuals who "were all chalkem south gang members."

"This gang is known for drugs guns and violence," Masic notes, underscoring the danger of the situation.

The police department has launched an internal investigation.

Good is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, where her public defender hopes the case will be dismissed.

If that doesn't happen, Stare said, she was not afraid of bringing Good's case to a jury trial.

"She was well within her rights."

People seldom read links here.   I seldom watch ANY videos.. my time  is too important to listen to some noise.

Your point on the gang is a good one.    :-)

I think at times these vid people are not too discreet.  The other thing is that cell phones=-  well guns are now designed to look like a cell phone.  True they are rare- but they exist.

farglebargle -> RE: Police State. (6/23/2011 6:57:58 AM)

If a cop is so paranoid that they're WORRIED about guns-that-look-like-iphones, then they need to be put on medical leave and their heads examined to see if their paranoia prevents them from performing their duties, and if so, they need to be fired as soon as possible to protect people from their potential violence.

pahunkboy -> RE: Police State. (6/23/2011 7:07:18 AM)

http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/c/cellgun.htm

"Beneath the digital face lies a .22-caliber pistol a phone gun capable of  firing four rounds in quick succession with a touch of the otherwise  standard keypad. European law enforcement officials stunned by the  discovery of these deadly decoys say phone guns are changing the rules of  engagement in Europe. It means police will have to draw their weapons  whenever a person being checked reaches for their mobile phone. Although  cell phone guns have not hit America yet, the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol,  Tobacco and Firearms, and the U.S. Customs Service say they've been  briefed  on the new weapons.  Realistic Appearance. "If you didn't know they were guns, you wouldn't  suspect anything," said Ari Zandbergen, spokesman for the Amsterdam  police.  "Only when you have one in your hand do you realize that they are  heavier,"  says Birgit Heib of the German Federal Criminal Investigation Agency.  "The  guns are loaded by twisting the phone in half. The .22-caliber rounds fit  into the top of the phone under the screen. The lower half, under the  keyboard, holds the firing pins. The bullets fire through the antenna by  pressing numbers on the keypad. Amsterdam police says they are very  sophisticated machines constructed inside gutted cell phones which do not  light up or operate as real phones. These are very difficult to make. We  believe experts are involved. "  The video clip shows the cell phone actually firing. Again, these phones  have not hit the US, but they are in use in overseas. Keep that in mind  if  you are going through customs and are asked to turn over your cell phone  to  be checked. Never joke with Customs Officials.
