""The human cost of the failed drug war has been enormous -- egregious racial disparities, shattered families, poverty, public health crises, prohibition-related violence, and the erosion of civil liberties. And of course the cost in dollars and cents has been staggering as well -- over a trillion dollars spent to incarcerate tens of millions of young people," Lee said Wednesday. "I co-sponsored this bipartisan legislation because I believe it is time to turn the page from this failed drug war.""

The question now is, will our elected representatives do the right thing or use this as another chip in the political game?

Its going from a federal issue to a state issue?

jlf1961 -> RE: New Bill to End Marijuana Prohibition (6/22/2011 3:58:31 PM)

It wont make it out of committee.

tazzygirl -> RE: New Bill to End Marijuana Prohibition (6/22/2011 3:59:46 PM)

I hope it does, to be honest. Then people can start blaming the states that wont change their laws. Too much money in this type of drug enforcement.

It is a bad idea that Ron Paul is on it.

They will twist it around, make him out to be a stoner.

I do think the DEA could lighten up- on rx regulations.     But I wont hold my breath.  It is sad when DRs are even afraid to prescribe pain pills.

Pot would make me fat- by munchies- so whatever they want to do is fine with me.

Perhaps, but only because there's an election cycle underway. The fix is in and the laws are getting re-written to accommodate the big money that's getting channeled into this 'new' economy.
I'm not saying it's good or bad but the fix is in. And you can say "Oh, Congress won't do this for fear of getting targeted by conservative voters" or whatever. But you would have said the same thing about derivatives back in the late 80s too.

It will still be up to the states to set their own laws, Lucy. So he very well could.

Ron Paul will INCREASE the votes he got over 2008 over this bill.  He did SO FUCKING LOUSY last time, there is no way to go but up. He can, if he exploits it get the marijuana kook vote along with the republican kook vote. I hope he does VERY WELL mind you.

No, this is being proposed at the federal level.

That said, the executive branch has authority over the drug war.  I'm not sure how Congress can stop the madness.

And I don't see Obama signing it.  It looks like a tight reelection, and he needs the puritan vote more than the stoner vote.

Oh, that's just bullshit, back in RI where I was born and raised, they have medical mj, and Drs don't hesitate to prescribe it. The PROVIDERS are the ones looking over their shoulders.

Needs to be a fed thing doesnt it??

Laws of construction. They just legislatively change the roles of the DEA  and whatever other agencies they need to. That's ONE way to do it. Congress created the DEA
However, in the case of marijuana, what is going to happen is that it will get removed from the 'scheduled drugs' list maintained by the FDA. By doing that, it will pave the way for states to actually legalize, remove the DEA from the equation, and give the treasury dept a clear path to examine how they want to address marijuana revenue.

If I read it correctly, the fed would lighten up and leave the laws to the individual states. If that is the case, then each state has to decide.

Question is, which states will legalize the use?

Lucylastic -> RE: New Bill to End Marijuana Prohibition (6/22/2011 6:47:38 PM)

Interesting to see what happens...I keep hoping that Canada is gonna come down on the same decision soon

pahunkboy -> RE: New Bill to End Marijuana Prohibition (6/22/2011 6:51:19 PM)

I am still deciding whose house we are all coming to for fun.   maybe more then one.

provfivetine -> RE: New Bill to End Marijuana Prohibition (6/22/2011 7:38:57 PM)

It's amazing how the gang of thieves writ large feel that we should be locking up people who combust a plant. Who are the criminals here?

First off, Obomba - the hypocritical former pot-smoker - needs to stop arresting sick people that are using it. This bill, like the hundreds of other similar proposals introduced before it, is going no where.

The answer will only come from nullification.

tazzygirl -> RE: New Bill to End Marijuana Prohibition (6/22/2011 8:14:21 PM)

When did Obama arrest someone for that?

outhere69 -> RE: New Bill to End Marijuana Prohibition (6/22/2011 8:23:52 PM)

Legalization won't help much if employers still ban it.
