I want to go to the space shuttle launch and missed out on tickets at the Space Center. Can anyone tell me where would be the best spot (and closest) to watch without a ticket? I'd like to get as close as possible. Any hints from anyone who's done it before?

The highway just outside the facility is the usual place. I've been told there is a park in Titusville that is set up for viewing but never been there.

Good luck.  It's going to be a zoo with so many people going to see the last shuttle launch ever, I'm sure all the "free" spots are going to be mobbed.  These are the closest spots: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/kennedy/about/view/view_shuttle.html

I have causeway tickets, 6 miles from the pad

Can you only see what's going on, or feel vibrations or anything??

I don't know.  It'll be my first in-person launch.

It's a mile or more away, but the town beach in Melborne has a beautifully unobstructed viewyou may need to park a mile away and hike down, but the view is well worth it.
And the shuttle still looks pretty big on the launch pad.
I would amend what I said at first... looking at the map it's a couple miles off. But still a great view

Oh, by the way, I have seen 3 or 4 launches there and it's about as crowded as a regular day on a florida beach. A good deal less jammed then in Kennedy itself, And the one time I watched a launch from the grounds I found I didn't like the perspective as much shortly after take off.

From the distance I was at you could feel it, but only mildly but as it rose higher, you got a good body rush.

Oh trust me it's more than a couple of miles.

We lived in Merritt Island for almost 5 years.  Once you cross the barge canal heading toward the Space Center a lot of the houses that way shake and rattle during the launch.

If you like camping Jetty Park is a great place to watch the launch from.  I can guarantee all of the RV spots are booked and probably all of the tent spots.  Any chance of getting in and watching it from there would require lining up to get in before they open to non campers in the morning.

The launch was never bad for us but the landing rattled the windows when the double booms went off.

I was 20 miles inland once working construction and could feel the launch thru the ground.

I doubt you have even the slightest idea what you're talking about.

Access to the roof of a nearby building. Ask for details. Note that it is technically illegal but the chances of trouble are very minimal.

There are no "nearby buildings" with rooftops to access.

Hmmmm maybe my Dad was misidentifying where we  were, But I doubt we were more than three miles away,,, and we'd stand on a beach south and a little west of the cape itself. If you faced the water and then turned like 20 degrees left, you would be looking directly at the launch pad.  I remember it was a 20 -25 minute drive from his house in Vero Beach, if that helps pin point it.

Well now, FlCouple seems to think I was somewhere else... I am trying to nail that down by describing how my Dad and I got there... They retired from Newport, RI to Vero Beach in the 80s and I visited a lot and might not be as familiar with the area as I thought.
Let's see what flcouple says relative to what I described.
I looked at that launch picture and every time, it looked closer than that.
