With experience you learn that life is not as black and white as you'd sometimes like it to be.
Our bodies are made up of 50-70 trillion cells, which go through the cycle of life and death. Think of a plant which you can see growing and changing almost daily.
Whenever there is a re-creation of cells (such as bone cells, especially at the wrist joint) there is a possibility. Cancer is not selective. Good, bad, young, old, cheap, expensive, it is not biased. Certainly, any being who has a history of poor nutrition may have a higher risk of developing disease. That is why there are daily choices we can make to give us the best chance at living a long healthy life.
If you take 30 minutes and go out to the internet, you'll find all kinds of "good and undeserving beings" whose cells begin to regenerate in a mutated fashion. I'm sorry you are finding this out by hearing about our experience. It does suck!
However, even while feeling completely immersed in this feeling of sorrow and dread, I am feeling blessed and grateful. This is because I choose to live consciously. I choose to feel all the bliss and happiness that Otter and I generate in each other's lives on a daily basis. I fell in love with this dog the first moment I saw his picture. He is the most loving, engaging creature I have ever known. (and I've had dogs all my life who were fabulous Golden Retrievers.)
Having a pet means eventually sending them on their way with grace and dignity. That is what I did for my Bart a year a go last March. That is what we will do for "da Forrest Dog" when the time is right.
In the meantime, working in human medicine myself, we are looking outside the mainstream box, to create our own miracle. We may or may not have success, but we will do what we can with his quality of life and comfort in mind.
