See - we have global warming.

Earth may be headed into a mini Ice Age within a decade What may be the science story of the century is breaking this evening, as heavyweight US solar physicists announce that the Sun appears to be headed into a lengthy spell of low activity, which could mean that the Earth – far from facing a global warming problem – is actually headed into a mini Ice Age.

NASA defines the term as a cold period between 1550 AD and 1850 AD (from Wiki)

Pretty cool huh? The mini Ice age started 100 years before the sunspot minimum that 'caused' it.

Nope, Just makes Me an educated person with a hardcore background in chemistry and marine science (the oceans drive weather patterns) who wants more data before I make up My mind instead of believing the first breathless national enquirer story I see.

I mean look at it objectively. The Maunder minimum occurred well after the beginning of the "little ice age". Therefore, it could NOT have caused it.

Low sunspot activity is associated with slightly lower solar output and possibly lower temperatures but higher sunspot activity is associated with more cosmic rays that can cause increased cloud cover which will increase the planet's albedo (reflectivity) and (you guessed it) lower temperatures.

As I said, WAY too little data to jump on any bandwagon.

Climatology is REALLY fucking complex. We are just now designing computers with enough number crunching power to come close to good predictions.

Nobody can predict next year or next decade or the next hundred years. We just have to look at the last century or ten or hundred centuries and try to spot trends

You're correct. Most folks rant and scream to hide their ignorance.

My personal opinion is that we need to wean away from oil NOT because I'm afraid of warming but because a crash program (similar to the space program of the 60s) in alternate energy would do 2 things.

1. It would reestablish the US as the preeminent technological power on the planet and

2. I could turn on My solar powered TV and watch arabs that USED to be rich as Croesus eating dirt, rocks, sand and camel shit while they beg for scraps from all the people they've fucked over the past 60 years.

We also need to save a lot of what we have too. It's a vast but finite resource and there are a lot of things that civilization depends on (lubricants, fertilizers, plastics and resins, medicine, textiles, non plastic polymers etc) and what we have has to last for as long as we want a civilization. I'd rather that be millenia and not centuries.

Look, I have a solution for the global warming (and increasing the value of my stock portfolio that includes winter sports stocks) all I need is ALL the nuclear weapons presently in the US arsenal, access to Yellowstone, and a detonation device.

I figure that I bury all the nukes about five hundred meters down, detonate them and set off the volcano. This should create a new ice age, and global climate change is averted.

Well you might not need to go to all that trouble....

But K, my way I insure that there are winter sports resorts in Yuma Arizona! Of course, the ice sheets moving down from the north pole may be a problem in the Northern States, and the frozen tundra in the plains, but the southern states should have good growing seasons.

And the ice age would deal with those people who dont know how to drive on snow or ice covered roads, thus cutting down on over population.

The only thing I have not figured out is how to deal with all that hot air generated by politicians of both parties.
