For those of us looking forward to KO coming back with his new show on Current (6/20/2011) The Rolling Stone has a great article with him online I took out a paragraph from the interview as to why I think it may generate some discussion about the media at large in this country, and the current climate that the media does business in. quote: Keith Olbermann on Why He Left MSNBC - and How He Plans to Get Even A candid interview with the host of 'Countdown' At Current, television is all we do—that's our business. We don't have amusement parks I have to worry about, we don't have environmental cases against us, we don't have a series of outdoor-advertising companies. If there's a decision between making money versus offending somebody, it will be a clean either/or—there won't be 19 other divisions that have some sort of say in the process. I'm not being critical of NBC. I just think people can trust what we do to be entirely based on the news merits. It will be that simple kind of old-fashioned television news operation of the Sixties and Seventies that had the proverbial Chinese wall around them to keep them away from concerns about advertisers. What we won't have is any concern that I have to somehow game a system to make sure I can continue to do what I want to do.

Think I may have to look for his show online, at firsts, not sure I will be able to get it here, should be interesting to see him unfettered, heh

I am interested in the fact that this news outlet is just a news outlet, like it says in the quote above, it will be like news used to be before NBC, ABC, and CBS were bought and merged with other companies. It has gotten much incestuous when these corporations need to be printing out disclosures about what news gets reported and their own conflict of interests in reporting it.

Not that I advocate the partisan focus of his schtick, which I believe moves us even further away from social relevance, I did like when he said (emphasis mine): It's not about "NBC is evil." It's about that media structure—CBS, ABC, CNN, even some of the smaller operations are now multinationals, with these extraordinarily diverse holdings. The corporation is one of the great unheralded human inventions of destruction. It is a way to absolve from any personal liability a bunch of people. They form together in a massive id and they do whatever they want. In a corporate setting, there's nothing to stop Rupert Murdoch or Disney from doing whatever the hell they want with the news. They could turn it into propaganda for the Chinese government or the socialist party of America, and who's going to stop them?

KO has an acknowledged slant on what he does. If people do not care for him for that reason, cool beans with me. I do not mind people having a decidedly admitted slant to their reporting, it is those who claim to be fair and balanced that get the derisive laughter from me. I would hope that this might spark some right leaning news organization that was all about the news, instead of about their parent corporation. More news from more sources is the way you get a balanced view, we only have a corporate view right now.

I don't watch TV anymore, so I'm not aware if there are any independent news channels on TV. But it seems reasonable to believe that the more sources, the more likely that balance will occur.

I see Keith Olbermann as satire more than I see him as news. He talks about the news, but he is often finding the humor in it... as far as on his countdown show

LMAO. Typical KO rewriting of history. He left because his contract wasnt being renewed. His ownannouncement even said "I was told Friday that this would be my last show", and Phil Griffin later confirmed that he was more trouble than his ratings justified. I wish he were still on for the Weiner affair. He would have dug himself a hole even deeper than KenDoll's.

Who cares? Olberman is what the democrats think is civil commentary. He was barely tolerable in sports but way in over his head in politics. Wherever he goes he'll have low ratings.

I dont believe I have ever denied watching fox, because , I certainly have and my opinions come from what I have observed, and not out of ignorance however it is a choice I use sparingly because the spin is not in my belief system

I'm not sure I am looking forward to him coming back. (Although I admit I am curious) Keith was amazing at one time. He was great at what my blog was doing: in-depth research of a ton of B.S. and hypocrisy in Washington. Over the last few years, he lost his edge, and became obsessed with the fact that he could rant (and hearing himself do it). His Scott Brown rant was his low point, and at that point he became a caricature of himself. The Neocons HATED him. (And that always made me smile) As for why he left MSNBC, I don't really care. He was becoming irrelevant. Personally, I hope he makes a HUGE comeback to his former self.

He spoke about the period of time that this happened being one of the most stressful of his life, his father was failing, he had just lost his mother, and he was extremely close to both of them. If I remember right, I think he mentioned that he may have been better served taking a leave of absence, but he thought he could keep up what he was doing even under the strain. If you remember he was taking large chunks of time off.
